Chambers: Leeds Boss’s Comments Disrespectful and Staggering
Thursday, 14th Jan 2016 18:06

Luke Chambers has hit back at Leeds manager Steve Evans for his comments after the Blues’ 2-1 victory over the Whites on Tuesday, which the Town skipper felt were “disrespectful” and “staggering”.

Evans accused Town of simply “lumping” the ball up to striker Daryl Murphy, said they had been “as bad in spells as we were” and dismissively added that if the Blues are “the benchmark [for the play-offs] then we’ll take that benchmark”.

Chambers, who scored Town’s equaliser five minutes after the break with Brett Pitman netting the winner in injury time, said he and the rest of the squad were less than impressed.

“Myself and the boys felt very disappointed by his post-match comments, having read them after the game,” Chambers writes in his column in the programme for Saturday’s match against Preston.

“I don’t whether he’s addressing the Leeds supporters who weren’t at the game to try and save face but I’ve no idea where he’s coming from.

“Yes, they look the lead and had a good 10-15-minute spell but after that it was one-way traffic.

“For him to then disrespect us as a team and say that if we are the benchmark for sixth place then he will take that, is honestly quite staggering.

“At the end of the day, we’ve walked away with six points off them this season and we are the ones who are in the play-off places fighting to get into the Premier League.

"I had a lot of respect for him before the game but I've lost some of that now.

“Nobody at Portman Road on Tuesday, even the most avid Leeds fan, would have thought they deserved to beat us, apart from Steve Evans and for him to even suggest that after the game is, in my opinion, disrespectful to the football club, the manager, the players - to everyone really.

“To their credit, I saw that a lot of Leeds fans disagreed with their manager and held their hands up, admitting we were the better team and deserved to win.

“I haven’t looked at the stats but I’m confident that we would have had more possession, more shots and more chances in their box. The stat that matters though is that we won the game.”

Evans was also highly critical of referee Fred Graham after the game - “I thought he was absolutely garbage" - and the official wouldn’t leave the field following the final whistle until the furious Leeds boss had been removed from the tunnel by stewards.

I was at the game and thought at the time that Leeds were playing hoodball and at times we were passing it around. To be labelled by Evans after the game as mediocre hoodball specialists was not only sour grapes and unprofessional but inaccurate and hyporcritical. It was the most entertaining game I've watched at PR for quite a while and will hopefully kick-start a better run of home form than of late. I disagree with those who say we lack quality. I saw plenty of it on Tuesday - Murphy top striker from last season, Sears, Frazer, Bru, Skuse and Berra were quality. I accept we don't have the money that Boro, hull and Derby have invested but we have built on last season and are in a good position to challenge for promotion.

Well Brenner & Mick Mills said that was by far the best performance at PR this season AND we played it short lots with the midfield three, so what game was Evans watching?

Their goal (according to him) was quality - long ball! Ours was a hopeful launch up field??

They lost their unbeaten run in the 92nd minute, what a wounder :)

SOUR GRAPES, ENOUGH SAID

No matter what people thought of Jimmy Hill on occasion he did speak some sense. Such as, that for 30 minutes after the game, whether you are a manager, player or supporter, whether you win lose or draw, you are not a sane individual such is the passion of the game. Steve Evans proves it.

So Steve Evans is a graceless, charmless, disrespectful nerk.

In other news, the Pope is Catholic and bears do their business in the woods.

As others have already pointed out, a simple case of sour grapes. Strangely though, this was the one game where we were NOT constantly hoofing.

Maybe he had his losing speech ready in advance.

I wouldn't be sad if they ended the season 3rd from bottom.

Chambo was right to counter this rant because Evans went beyond the usual rose-tinted "we didn't deserve to lose" rubbish and made some unprofessional remarks about our ability and style of play, but the rest of us shouldn't worry too much. Just enjoy the victory and give him more rope. We ARE the benchmark, and unless Leeds buy their way out of their situation, I can't see them making up the ground. It's already beginning to look like the last chance saloon, Mr Evans. I feel a bit for any decent Leeds fans who have to put up with the pantomime leadership at their club.

I think jas0999 has got it completely right. ITFC have an unenviable reputation as one of the least attractive teams in the Professional game as did Wolves & Sunderland when MM was in charge. It may work but it will never put bums on seats.

Winning puts bums on seats ask any bottom club in any league you play and adapt to what you are up against.
Watch any game in any league there is always a percentage of a long ball up front it keeps the opposition guessing and we do not just employ this tactic both our goals came from a winger cross.
Just keep on winning Town!!!

Clearly Evans is like his president Sig.Cellino...complete buffoons, no respect for the people involved in football and in the wrong profession. They deserve each other clearly..

Just had a listen to Evans to see what all the fuss is about.
Nothing wrong in what he said. Wish our manager could speak so directly instead of coming out with his usual dross and childish riddles every week. Standby for later today.
Chambers would get into no other team at right back - so best concentrate on your football.

Hegansheroes read Harry from baths as usual excellent blog I think the fans from PNE share the same opinion of their team as some of the posters on here although they do seem to accept more than a few on here that it's points at any cost that matter

Don't go Blueboy1981. I enjoy your input whether I agree or not.

I don't think anyone ever says someone isn't entitled to their opinion. If they have that right then we also have the right to criticize their opinion.
Talking like that isn't the way a manager should be behaving and I wouldn't be happy with someone like that in charge. MM is no wall flower but he understands that if you want to do better in future you have to look yourself in the mirror first. If someone is that deluded they probably aren't going to be well-informed and will make poor decisions.
I've lost count of the times I've gone to games and thought these are nothing special, actually that is kind of the point in the Championship, there is hardly ever a standout team. This year only really Middlesborough look untouchable. The truth is the Championship standard is never going to match the quality on display on Match of the Day.
If he had said fair play to them as they won the game, but I don't see that they are any better than us, if this is the benchmark I'm confident we can reach their level in the league. I would answer, maybe but now show us then.
Funny thing is, if he is still in charge of them next time we play them he's just given us an extra incentive to rub his face in it.

This is why we love him! Defends this team and puts his heart and soul in to the club!
A long serving Ipswich fan said to me that he is up there with the likes of Matt Holland as captain - and I've got to say I agree.
Performances are getting ever better too!

This is the one game we actually played football and controlled in a great fashion so his comments are just plain ridiculous---as my dear mother would have said he is a nasty piece of work.

BackTheBlues was going to vote you down to start because it sounded like you were talking about Evans. :)
Chambo is exactly the type of character we have needed as captain for quite a few years. A manager needs a general to pass on their message. No-one is perfect, but I honestly can't fault our captain. Players also have the right to express their opinions in constructive way and the captain is the appropriate spokesman for that. People saying he should concentrate on playing, I don't see any evidence that he isn't.
Probably more than results, I am proud of being associated with the characters at our club. Of course I would like to see a bit more skill involved, but we have the right base to build on. MM is not perfect but there is no reason players who work hard for the team can't be skillful. MM did sign Fraser. I'm not sure why Bournemouth would keep him if they don't to play him.

If Steve Evans ever wears a frilly feather boa to go with the eye mascara then we might start to take him more seriously.
