McCarthy on Leeds Boss: He Certainly Gives His Jaw Some Exercise
Friday, 15th Jan 2016 13:42

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he doesn’t understand why the likes of Leeds manager Steve Evans feel the need to talk down teams who have just beaten them. Evans was highly critical of the Blues following the Whites’ 2-1 defeat at Portman Road on Tuesday.

The former Rotherham boss accused Town of simply “lumping” the ball up to striker Daryl Murphy, said they had been “as bad in spells as we were” and dismissively added that if the Blues are “the benchmark [for the play-offs] then we’ll take that benchmark”.

Quizzed about the comments, McCarthy said: “He can talk, can’t he? He certainly gives his jaw some exercise, I don’t know what else but his jaw certainly gets some exercise.

“I thought we were excellent on Tuesday night and all the stats point to that and I don’t understand why people do it. It’s almost like self-publicists talk up a good game. Why?

“We played Portsmouth on Saturday and they battered us and I’m honest to say, I’m not happy to say because I’d prefer not to be saying that, but that they were great.

“If we get beat and we’ve not played very well, why does it always have to be that it’s some outside influence except the opposition that’s beaten them?

“It’s great when you’re on a good run because you can be really magnanimous in being undefeated and winning games, that’s great. But a little bit of honesty and integrity I find is really welcome. Not everybody’s that way unfortunately.”

In addition to his comments about the Blues, Evans was also highly critical of referee Fred Graham after the game - “I thought he was absolutely garbage" - and the official wouldn’t leave the field following the final whistle until the furious Leeds boss had been removed from the tunnel by stewards.

Draw a line and move on. We have six points against them. They have none. End of now.

Just have to laugh at Evans criticising us for 'launching the ball to Murphy'. Shame the interviewer didn't point out to him that their goal came about by their CB launching it downfield.

Have to agree with his comments about the Ref though but Evans didn't mention that the Ref failed to give a penalty when Chambers was bundled over in the box with the ball nowhere near or the fact that he didn't book any Leeds players for trying to kick lumps out of Fraser all night.

Quite agree with MM about the Leeds game except to point out he needs to sort out his views on stats. After the Pompey game he said “So don't bring me stats. What is it they say? There are lies, damned lies and statistics? And that's just what they are.”

I must have been at a different game with all this talk of launching!
Was our winning goal a classic example of our launching.....a big hoof upfield to our 6' plus giant Ryan Fraser who showed no pace or ball control whatsoever just relied on his height and strength instead! 🤔

Following those stupid comments from Steve Evans, I wonder what the older Leeds supporters think. Can you even compare him to some of their great managers of the past,Don Revie, Brian Clough, Billy Bremner etc.

I think we are giving a prize plonker like Evans too much airtime , the guy has a history of being deranged with bans and tax dodging , love the jaw comment , long ball ? Drogba? Chelsea - won the premiership , we have to face facts that some of our fans just like to moan . I will take MM all day over some of the others

To be clear MM said he couldn't give a flying one of his team were bottom of the stats for passing and possession as long as we win. Obviously this doesn't mean he never looks at or uses stats, especially if an idiot like Evans can proven wrong by them. I'm sure he's not losing sleep over your perception that he chooses his moments to use stats in interviews.

Merson commented on when he won the Premiership with Arsenal and was questioned on tactics and all the qne goal or odd goall ground out wins " Just look on the cup on it it says we won the Premiership not how we won iT " That will do for me!!!

To be clear he inferred that stats were pointless and meant nothing, so shouldnt use them when they suit, just to be clear!

You seem to have missunderstood Dissboy, I'd read it again if I were you, try to imagine someone asking you that question after your team had just won.
