McCarthy and Connor Extend Town Contracts
Friday, 22nd Jan 2016 13:14

Town boss Mick McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor have extended their contracts until the summer of 2018 with options to remain at the club for two further years. The duo, who previously worked together at Wolves, took over at Portman Road in November 2012 and signed three-year contracts in the summer of 2014.

“TC and I are obviously delighted to have extended our contracts,” McCarthy told the club site.

“We are really enjoying the job here and the results on the pitch have improved year on year.

“In a relentless and tough league that the Championship is, that is testament to the hard work the players have put in.

“I think we have a team we can all be proud of and it’s mine and TC’s job to make sure that continues.”

Ian Milne, Town’s managing director, added: “It’s obviously great news that Mick and Terry have agreed contract extensions at the football club.

“We have also signed up a number of our players on long-term contracts over the past year or so who have been at core of the team and with Terry and Mick in charge of that team we will continue to have a stable foundation to build on over the coming seasons.”

Timmy h respect your opinion and have always found you to give a very balanced debate. Look forward to seeing the statistics later. My point is if are league position has improved year on year. That's surely the be all and end all of it. This season still has a long way to go so let's just get behind the boys. Then in May we can see if micks delivered further improvement.

It's a good day for McCarthy and Connor but a sad day for the traditions, the way the town play no quality anywhere on the pitch, if man spent millions he would still play the same way I just want him to go but this is not going to happen The Irish mafia have won

Absolutely brilliant news now they can continue the great job of repairing the damage the two previous fools did.
Its also great to see so many people not usually posting on here showing there gratitude
It's normally being shoved down my throat that I'm in the minority Gloucester blue agree however the anti management mob the dozen or so can never come up with any realistic alternatives.
A great day for our club now let's get 3pts tomorrow to make for a fantastic weekend.
Finally 55 down marks blimey that's something I only get 10-15 when I've really wound them 😂

This is both good and bad.
I totally respect where we were when Mick took over and the fact he kept us up and then finished 9th and 6th respectively.
But lets not kid ourselves we were never good enough to go up last season and we wont this year either.
When we win we do it by bludgeoning teams into submission, this will only get you so far im afraid.
All this contract extension means is continual flirtation with the play offs every year without ever having the quality to reach the promised land.
I can count on the fingers of one hand the amount of games we have won by outplaying the opposition football wise in his whole tenure, with Leeds being the most recent, Middlesboro last season, the rest are just grind grind grind.
Dont get me wrong the job he's done moulding the squad into a tight knit unit who give everything is to be applauded, but footballs not just about effort, its so much more.
Mick is a solid Championship manager and nothing more.
We are in safe hands while hes in charge, especially as Evans refuses to spend even a fraction of what we make from selling our best players but we will never push on.

People seem to forget what a job he has done with town to improve our club on the pitch and financially aswell, Paul jewell payed buckets loads more for Taylor then McCarthy did for sears and we can see how the two settled in two different ways... I for one am very happy to have McCarthy as manager and long may it continue, he's a real honest bloke who can get results, different to all the tosh we had with jewell and Keane, in Mick we trust and good luck for all the travelling fans to Birmingham tomorrow, a big game in the season imo, COYB

I think mick was exactly what we needed when he came in, he steadied the ship and repaired damage caused by keane and jewell. I do think now though that a change is needed. I dont go every week, but have been to most home games this season and the football i have seen has been poor. I do not believe we will go up this season and unless better players are signed in the summer cannot see it happening then either.

essex57, do you not go further back than "the two previous fools"? Mcarthy does look good compared to those two, but is a joke when compared with JR, GB & of course Sir Bobby. If you're happy with the Yorkshire man, then you have no ambition!

Terrible news.
Confirmation that hoofball mediocrity remains at Portman Road for the foreseeable future.
Very disappointed
Surely the ME Group can't run the rest of their business like this. I previously e-mailed them directly to ask but even after a reminder I did not get a reply let alone the courtesy of an acknowledgement. Good job I wasn't going to follow it up with an enquiry about corporate hospitality.
Good tax break I guess

What idiots so many of our so called fans are. Time to tune into reality FM MM & TC are the best thing that has happened for many a year at ITFC. Yes I would love to see us passing teams off the pitch and winning 4-2 every week. But I am happy we have the stability that MM & TC have brought to our club. The fact that we are up in the mix for the last two years without having spent any money is nothing short of a miracle . Well don't MM &TC long may you last.

I'm grateful to MM and TC for rescuing Town from the inevitability of lower league football.

Whilst I don't particularly enjoy our hoof ball, we can and sometimes do play the Ipswich way. My hope is that this move by the club is as much about giving a message of stability to potential incoming players, as it is a thank you to MM/TC.

I would certainly prefer to work in a business with stable management than one where the top team regularly chops and changes.

Here's hoping ......

Shepton Mallet blue I go back to 1975 but I live in 2016 the games totaly different to then I was at Wembley cologne St ettiene AZ Alkmar great memories so with greatest respect I don't need you to lecture me on ambition.

essex57 Shepton Mallet makes a good point. This is the safe move for the club. Flirt with the play offs year after year without ever having the quality to go up or bring someone else in and risk it going wrong is what this decision is based on and nothing more. So on that basis anybody whos really happy with it doesnt have the ambition to push on.
Deep down even the staunchest Mick fan knows sneaking into the play offs is the best we will achieve under him. Like i said in my previous post effort will only get you so far.

Fantastic news! Should have been till 2020!

People going on about spending money on fees why not imagine we spent £3m on Henshall, £2m on Cameron Stewart. Would that mean they are worthy signing? In fact if we had spent £4m on Freddie Sears would he look as good a signing as he has been? Id prefer town sign 3 players on frees and 2 work out than spend £3m+ on one player and he be a flop!

Ambition bring in a new management team chuck a few million pounds at them stay mid table or get relegated sorry I prefer stability funny enough what this club is renowned for look how long they gave Robson and Burley we are progressing I am sure that new signings will gradually strengthen the team just because I support the current set up does not mean I lack ambition I think it could be called patience.

Please dont compare McCarthy with Robson and Burley. Chalk and cheese

I always worry when a player or manager signs a new contract that there will be an immediate dip in form as it happens so often! That being said, I don't see that happening in this case. MM & TC have been excellent for us & I truly believe, considering what little money they have had available, it's incredible how competitive they have made us. In the days before FFP I do think they would get us promoted but FFP has made that harder as we cannot compete financially with clubs with parachute payments.
As much as it irks to see our rivals splash bucket loads of cash while we deal in loans & freebies, I think it's right that we adhere to a budget & only spend what we can. With so many clubs going for it financially this season some will undoubtably lose out & then fall foul of FFP. The league MUST then impose penalties on them otherwise it becomes worthless.
This continual throw money at it approach cannot last forever and clubs will close. Only 3 clubs can get promoted so if all 24 clubs overspent, 21 will fail.
Current ITFC route is best way to go IMHO & we couldn't have a better manager & coach then the current incumbents for the job

We have more stability and a great work ethic in the squad than we've had for a few years now, and the contract extensions to M.M and T.C is good news after Marcus threw loads of cash to previous managers( I use the term managers loosely!!) now is the time for the owner to back the manager and give us the signings needed to bolster a stereotyped squad into one that will get promotion

Great another few years of boring hoofball ! It seems there is a hell a lot of easily pleased fans on here , he gets paid a lot of money to do a job ,and to be honest his style ,bores me to death ..

Congratulations to Mick and TC. One wholeheartedly agrees with most of the posts on here today. Boardroom backing of the manager harks back to the glory days but this now has to be followed up with some financial backing for the manager to bring in some much-needed quality in the centre of the park.

Going on about how wonderfully MM has done on a limited budget and adhering to FFP is a smokescreen, has any of the embargoes imposed drastically impinged on any of the teams, QPR for instance over spent by a long way, there was talk of them being docked points, even not being allowed to enter the league if they did not pay a large fine, result lawyers got involved and QPR got away with it. Other clubs soon cottoned on. Unless points are deducted teams will continue to flout the laws and we will remain a mid-table championship team. How many years until we celebrate our silver anniversary in this league. Truly the only way we will get new silverware in the trophy cabinet

Aside from anything this is a great business move for ME. Ignoring anything else MM (not forgetting TC) brings more value to a squad than any other manager that I can think of.
