Hayes Saves Penalty and Dozzell Skippers as England U17s Draw With Germany

Keeper Nick Hayes saved a penalty and midfielder Andre Dozzell skippered as England’s U17s drew 2-2 with Germany in their second game at the Torneio Internacional do Algarve this afternoon.

The third Town academy player in the squad, striker Ben Morris, came on as a second-half sub.

Dozzell was subbed at half-time with England 2-0 in front via a brace from Sheffield Wednesday’s George Hirst, the son of former Owl David.

Hayes maintained his side’s two-goal lead when he saved a German penalty midway through the second half.

However, goals from Florian Baak on 73 and deep in injury time Renat Dadashov saw the game end level, as England’s opening match against Portugal had on Friday.

Dozzell

Hayes, who was an unused sub against the Portuguese, was winning his third U17 cap, Dozzell his eighth and Morris his second.

The England youngsters play their final game of the tournament against Holland on Tuesday.

Great to see our young lads progressing and getting recognition that is obviously deserved(great work Mr Klugg and staff at the academy) Sir Bobby would have had them in the 1st team squad and given them a few minutes as subs by now as he was never afraid "to blood a good young'un" and his judgment was not bad in that direction!! over to you Mick, not that you will listen to a supporter of this great club for over 56 years I hope you enjoyed your pint last night after failing to get the point you set out to get!! mine was not tasting very good.

You appear to be inferring that McCarthy is disinclined to give the youngsters a chance. Again, not supported by the facts...Mings...Emmanuel...

rabbit added 10:33 - Feb 8 I have to agree with your point Bonner the fact is that it wasn't until 1987 that second sub's were allowed. I am certainly not suggesting that Mr Robson did anything other than give youth a chance frankly he had to there was a money shortage at ITFC even in those days!

As for McCarthy; he has shown that if the youngsters are good enough they will get their chances. It worked with Mings and the club benefited greatly. He tried it with Emmanuel and the player is clearly not yet ready. Bishop is another case in point; 33 games before his nineteenth birthday, all under McCarthy. The 'fact' that injury has prevented Bishop from continuing his progress this season is a disappointment to all of us but the point is that, if the player is good enough, he'll get his chance.
Those of us old enough to have enjoyed the club's purple period under Robson have it to treasure; for a while it seemed we had a never-ending stream of quality coming through the youths and we can all name the players involved. Rarely has any club, anywhere, been able to produce so many in so short a space of time whilst having a manager of rare skill and vision, able to make the best of those young assets. But, as was inevitable, the stream dried up.
McCarthy is a fine manager with a proven record of success. We were hurtling towards oblivion when he took over. We are now competing against clubs able to spend many more millions than us. And we are in the hunt for the play-offs. I doubt whether any other manager, dealt McCarthy's hand, would play the cards any better...

Binner like you I was privileged to follow Ipswich during the Robson years and much before.I only went to Ipswich the first time as Roy Bailey gave us 6 free tickets,and I went to see Stanley Matthews.
Personally I cannot recall any manager, since then, introducing so few youngsters.Both Cressy and Tyrone Mings were bought into the club,Tyrone on recommendation of Russell Osman who was at the club at the time I believe.
Therefor in three and a half years McCarthy has only brought through 1 player from the Youth system who currently is a long term sick note,and he now seems to look at players who are without a club,as they are cheap.
I don't think that is a very good record

Seasider; I accept that, in recent years, the club hasn't taken many players all the way from youths to established first- teamers but that isn't necessarily the fault of the current manager. It may simply be because our youngsters haven't been good enough. He tried Jack Marriott and I remember us all hoping that Marriott would kick on and impatient to see him as a first teamer. Eventually the club, presumably McCarthy, decided that the player wasn't quite up to it. I remember some contributors to this forum being disappointed that we'd let him go. Marriott is still only 21 so has time to improve (a-la-Vardy?) but is not yet holding down a regular starting place in League 2. I suspect that most of us no longer expect Marriott to ever set the Championship alight. Perhaps McCarthy knows what he is doing rather more than he is often given credit for...

With regard to the Robson era we must also remember that he had a much wider pool of young players to choose from because the rules were so much different with respect to youth players.
Bobby Robson was an absolute God send to ITFC as was Sir Alf but let's not forget the 3 or 4 years of abuse he received from so many fans when he started the younger players and getting rid of the likes of Bill Baxter etc and the team were battling relegation

Forums for opinions! Luckily we aren't all ITFC managers eh! Different views of youth, line ups, passing etc
I just like to support the team that's put out in front of the opposition and sing my heart out to help them out, then IF we lose I don't join the forums to abuse the players or managers for their selections or choices, because I get the feeling I wouldn't do any better, although most of the people on here think they would.
Do me a favour Ipswich fans, get behind the team whatever your thoughts before, during and after!! It's not like they're going to read this and give you a job because your opinion sounds good is it?
Doom and gloom doesn't help anyone, we all cheer when they score and win, and we all get irritated when we lose, however, moaning ain't gonna help, move on and support them harder and louder next time!
ITFC forever, no matter who's in charge and who's playing!

Binner added 19:13 - Feb 8 Yes. Though as a little lad living near Newmarket I wasn't able to get to the games. Dad started taking me to a few games in 1965 then we moved to Felixstowe in '67 and I was able to become a regular.
