Holloway: Town Will Do Well to Keep Mick Tuesday, 26th Apr 2016 19:57
Former Millwall, Crystal Palace and Blackpool boss Ian Holloway believes Town “will do well to hold on to” manager Mick McCarthy this summer and says he should be on the shortlist for the vacant Aston Villa job.
Echoing comments previously made by ex-Villa man Paul Merson, Holloway told Sky Sports: "Mick McCarthy should be on the shortlist for the next Aston Villa job, without a shadow of a doubt.
"I think Ipswich will do well to hold on to McCarthy this summer. Someone with his credibility and know-how will be hot property."
He added: "Villa must go for someone who knows the Championship and have seen it and done it before.
"It's going to take someone with real experience to clean up that mess. It's going to take down to earth talking. A straight talking person will need to lead and make the players believe again.
"That man will need to get the overpaid players who don't care out of the door. It will take someone with great skill to achieve that. It's massive job and someone has a huge job on their hands.
“They'll be a long queue of people who'd want that job - it's a belting gig, but it's one hell of a project."
Having been second-favourite earlier in the month, McCarthy is now down to sixth-favourite with ex-Leicester boss Nigel Pearson odds-on to get the job.
Meanwhile, McCarthy, who signed a new Town contract until 2018 with an option for a further two seasons in January, says he’s looking forward to having midfielder Teddy Bishop available next season after the 19-year-old endured an injury-hit 2015/16.
“It’s been a tough time for Bish and you could see at Middlesbrough when he had 15 minutes that he was goosed at the end,” he told the club site.
“He’s got to come back after the close season and get himself fighting fit for next year. He is a wonderful talent. You can see that by the way he glides past players and we want to see that talent back on the pitch next season.”

It's been a couple of days since you reminded us all that you have cancelled your season ticket. If you are about to break this news to us all over again do remember to spread it over several posts, and keep smashing away at that full stop button!
It says on this website: http://www.barriesview.com/all-time-premier-league-manager-statistics "20% — Mick McCarthy has the lowest win percentage of managers to be in charge of at least 100 Premier League matches." What have the McCarthy lovers got to say about that then? Does that inspire you with further confidence in Messiah Mick Almighty?
So bored of the so called experts banging on about Mick not getting any money to spend blah blah as if it excuses everything he does wrong. Having no money does not excuse the following:
1: Not bringing a rightback in for 3 years to avoid choosing 2 centre halves from 3. This has cost us so many times and has ruined Chambers ability to play at centre half when needed there.
2: Not putting Bart back in the team and claiming Gerken is as good when even Stevie Wonder can see thats not the case as has been proven.
3: Continually playing atleast 2 defensive central midfielders no matter who the opposition.
4:Continually picking certain players week in week out when there are better players available in the squad. Douglas being the clearest example of this. Playing Chambers and Knudsen ahead of Parr are other examples of his clear favouritism. And obviously Gerken.
5: Playing agricultural sterile hoofball. These are professional footballers, they can play passing football, they are clearly trained and instructed to hoof it.
6: Freddie Sears...the boy terrorised Championship defences during the 2nd half of last season playing as a striker but has spent virtually all this season wasted on the wing. At the start of the season he could have played him up there with Murphy like last season but with the option of McGoldrick sat just behind them but obviously that would be far too adventurous. He could also have played him alongside McGoldrick but that would have meant keeping the ball on the floor with no big man upfront and we all know thats not gona happen. Either way hes taken a dangerous goalscoring striker and turned him into a semi winger who doesnt score a lot and half the time is has to drop back into the left back position just to get on the ball.
So next time somebody wants to point out the lack of funds please enlighten me on how that excuses all if the above.
7: I appreciate that he could have corrected many of he above gripes that I have listed if he had the support and funding from the owner. And I promise that as a massive supporter of my club I shall only ever focus on the negatives.
I may be shot for this comment but please read through the lot before instantly hitting dislike.
Chambers has been one of the most consistent players this year. Playing out of position he has got a handfull of goals and assist and has even learnt to do a step over, I would class him as a right back.
Freddie sears has in my opinion played better on the wing than down the middle this year. If he plays well on the wing why would you move him?? And when he's played as a winger he's been a defensive asset as well as being allowed to push up the pitch. At the time who else could we play there with injuries??
Mick having a "bad" playoff record means he's got a number of teams into the playoffs and has also got two different teams promoted. They are the facts!
Football has not moved on in the championship the fans expectations of certain people on here have become unrealistic. I've said this before but I'll say it again, if a bad season means finishing 8th then the club is going in the right direction. Yes we all want to watch town in the prem but crying about it all summer will not help. Think of what will happen with a good season next year and a summer of mick sorting the team out again. At the start of this year we were a side that could go up and we're still the exact same team we've just had some bad form. Bad form passes, a good manager should stay.
Gcon you are missing the point. How does having no money explain him picking certain players all the time when he already has better in the squad. Thats just down to favouritism which is bad management. And how come hes still brought players in in every position barring an orthodox rightback in 3 years? The other players were free or cheap, no free or cheap rightbacks in 3 years? I think not. Protecting his boys. And again how does not having funds explain not putting Bart back in?
HarryS h our best spell last season was when Parr was at rightback with Chambers in the middle.Actually played some good stuff with Parr and Mings providing the width with 2 in midfield and Didz or Williams behind the strikers. We lost one game at Cardiff after a great run and he couldnt wait to get Smith back in and go back to hoofing it. Say what you like but Chambers is not a rightback.
Wurzzle Ollie, sniffing around for the Town job - no thanks.
Really not sure how I feel about Mick, it's definitely a case of be careful what you wish for but on the other hand after watching the dross we have endured this season & regressing as a team, sometimes I feel like driving him to Villa Park myself!
The Mick debate is similar in some ways to the EU Referendum, do you take a leap into the unknown or stick with more of the same? It's a bit like being in a boring relationship and been tempted to look for something more exciting. Personally I'm all for taking the plunge with Brexit and Mickexit! It could turn out bad but why play it safe forever if you are bored stiff? You only live once and the way this club is going I'll be dead before we get promoted or we go on another cup run! I'd rather take a gamble and see what happens. However, given ME's record on appointing previous managers, we could end up with a real stinker! There is that concern. But I say fortune favours the brave! Perhaps Mick will walk in any case and then ME's tight hand will be forced regardless.
So what if Mick got 2 teams out of this league. There are 3 managers every season that get teams out of this league and rarely do they ever repeat the success. Look at Nigel Adkins and Paul Lambert for example, led Southampton and Norwich from league 1 to the premier league with back to back promotions. Are they hot property now?! No!! They have both left those clubs and been sacked again by subsequent clubs in the time since!! There is a lot of luck involved in promotion as well such as having a team that for some reason clicks all of a sudden, no key injuries, a few quality youngsters coming through which turn into internationals and some lucky signings. Ipswich had all of this the last time we were promoted all those years ago. I just don't think the general environment at town is right for any manager and you can only blame the owner for that.
The beat thanks saved me putting over some of those points Bohs legend if 5 wins in 22 and setting up a team week in week out 'not to lose' is 'MMS pragmatic approach' then I think a few of us will chip in and drive him up to Villa Park He maintained this Jan despite injuries he could not improve on his squad He is a product of past times He says 'be careful what you wish for' how about a team that goes out looking to win a football match -that would be nice
Bohslegend - "real football people". You're putting yourself in that bracket then i take it? Given your insight, i'd say you're way off the pace. Plenty of teams play football and challenge without big budgets. There's an exhaustive list. You seem to look at our side and think MM has performed miracles to get them to where they are. I look at that side and think it has all the personnel to challenge should we play the ball on the deck.
If your barometer for being a "real football person" is recognition of long ball football as an achievement - you're probably not worthy of retort.
@thebeat, for the questions you pose, you won't find the answers on this forum. The likes of Bohslegend continually side step such awkwardness, and revert to type 'Mick saved us, alleluia'. Anyhow, my question is this, has McCarthy got the energy for another club, because at the moment he's picking up his wages in a most comfortable way! Life's a breeze at leafy Portman Road, with little or no expectations!
Warktheline - a very valid point. A new contract from the owner, a regular vote of confidence from 16000 supporters & no interest in our club's history of entertaining , passing football. As you say life couldn't be better.
And Mick this was under your your tenure (see vid below) If we went back to playing it like this more often you'd have zero complaints that's for sure. Even Skuse and Hyam get involved in this one (fair play)! Why can't we have more of this please instead of the mediocrity we've been getting served up for a lot of this season? Nobody could grumble at this! Watch here:
