Blues Linked With Blade Freeman
Tuesday, 14th Jun 2016 11:08

Town are being linked with transfer-listed Sheffield United right-back Kieron Freeman.

According to various reports, the Blues are monitoring the 24-year-old’s situation, Freeman having been told he can leave the League One Blades despite having a year left on his contract.

Freeman spent the second half of last season on loan at Portsmouth but made only four starts and three substitute appearances for Pompey and missed the play-offs as he was sent off in the final League Two game of the campaign, coincidentally against Northampton, where new Blades manager Chris Wilder was then boss.

Town regularly sent scouts to watch Portsmouth last season to keep tabs on loanee Matt Clarke and Adam Webster, who became the Blues’ first signing of the summer earlier this month, a deal which saw Clarke join Pompey full-time.

Despite his lack of games during his loan spell, Portsmouth boss Paul Cook is keen to sign Freeman on a permanent basis but that deal has been held up while the player and Sheffield United negotiate a settlement of his current contract.

Freeman, a close friend of former Blue Elliott Hewitt, was born in Arnold and came through the youth system at his local club Nottingham Forest.

Having spent time on loan at Mansfield and Notts County, the 5ft 10in tall defender moved on to Derby County in 2012 having made only one senior start and one sub appearance for Forest.

Capped by Wales at U17, U19 levels in addition to 15 caps with the U21s, Freeman spent two further spells out on loan at Notts County, then Sheffield United and again at Mansfield while with the Rams before joining the Blades on a permanent basis in January 2015.

The Blues moving for Freeman would be a surprise given his recent career history, although TWTD reported that Town boss Mick McCarthy had sent scouts to watch him in January 2013 during his time as a Derby player.

McCarthy is keen on signing a right-back having offered Kevin Foley a deal when his short-term contract was up at the end of the season. The former Irish international is currently understood to be weighing up his options.

Meanwhile, Monty Patterson’s senior international debut for New Zealand at the Oceania Nations Cup means his former club, Auckland-based Eastern Suburbs, are due what’s understood to be a small payment from Town.

Patterson, 19, made five appearances for the All Whites as they won the tournament, beating hosts Papua New Guinea on penalties in Saturday’s final.

“We were thrilled for Monty at his selection,” Suburbs chairman Chris Ruffell said. “As a club, we took pride at watching one of our former stars playing for our national team.

“The monies paid by Ipswich will be invested into our coaching programmes to help produce the next budding international.”

Always rated him think he has been a bit unlucky in recent seasons and would complete the defence with him competing with Emmanuel and Chambo competing with Webster for the right centre back role

Would be good, but a little concerned we are always being linked with defenders. Are Smith and Berra leaving the club?

Pleased to see us linked with a right back. I love Chambo but he's the weak link of our team playing there. We need someone young who can cope with pacey wingers running at them and can get up the pitch and put crosses in.

Sounds like a decent signing to me ... I like they way that we are strengthening the defence ... Need to sign a creative midfielder still and maybe a new striker

This one is out of the blue(excuse the pun) but still only paper talk really. We do need a recognised RB so things MIGHT be moving in the right direction, but won't get excited until it really happens though.

Defenders leaving? Hopefully Berra is, yes.

I hope this is just gossip FFS..... we need to sign some Quality, not free agents who are being released by average league one teams. May as well keep Tabb, Toure, Coke and Varney. This is a BIG summer for MM to prove he can bring in the right players and get us back on track.

Hope he is not one who would play in any position just to get a game, we have enough of those.

A player with potential but clearly not someone who will walk into the first team. Sign enough rough stones and you'll find a few diamonds.

For the negative comments I'd point out Freddie Sears was doing a steady job with Colchester and he's a key player now, Bart was a bench warmer a lot of his early career and we took a punt on him. Cole Skuse was a steady eddy in a relegated team and has become a very key figure for us too. If we sign him hopefully he'll play the best football of his career.

Surely we can do better than him?

I agree with looking at the lower league for some gems yet this lad has barely played?! With Digby I understand it but this lad is older so can't be age or inexperience keeping him out of the team. However if he joins I hope he has a great career with us. Would like to see us go for a goal scoring midfielder & some pace now

@Lathers, your post is absolutely spot on and couldn't agree with you more. Besides, if we did sign him does anyone REALLY think that he would get in before Chambers

Haha. Freeman. Perfect signing for us.

Released year early by league 1 side, on loan at league 2 club and only 4 starts !! It maybe that he improves at the higher level but hardly going to s t the world alight. More average fare and surely we should be listed looking at better than this lad ??

Good news we are targeting a right back. Ticks the boxes for Evans. Free transfer and wages likely to be cheap. Not good enough for a below average league one club though, so whether he is good enough for us remains to be seen.

I said in a recent post that I hope MM gives a bit more game time to some of our young players from the Academy.
I know that this happened at the tail end of last season, when there was nothing to play for except to sell more season tickets;but what about Josh Emmanuel or Kenlock, who both gave a good account of themselves to me at the beginning and end of the season.

Surely they are better than this chap, who doesn't seem to have held a place down at any club he has been at,and who are all well below us in the Football League set up.

Another potentially 'brilliant' player - unless of course he doesn't join us. Then he'll suddenly become crap - and certain people will not be disappointed - as only an 'average' player anyway.

Heard / seen all that somewhere before - I wonder where ... ??
