Smith Signs New Deal
Thursday, 28th Jul 2016 14:53

Centre-half Tommy Smith has put pen to paper on a new three-year contract with an option for a further season.

New Zealand international Smith, 26, has been with the Blues since joining the academy as a scholar in the summer of 2006 and broke into the first team two years later.

Town's longest-serving first-team squad member, Smith has made 241 starts and 13 sub appearances for the Blues, scoring 23 goals.

In my opinion this is excellent news and a real positive on what has been an underwhelming pre season. Tommy is a consistent performer and has been up there in previous seasons as a fans player of the year contender, we missed him this season when foolishly dropped by MM.

In addition, his goal scoring record is excellent! Scored more in his career than most of our midfielders.

Really good news.

It sounds like the interest from Fulham was concocted by agents to give leverage for a new deal.

From a write off some seasons ago to our longest serving player, a full international with World Cup experinece and perhaps he'll emerge as a future Captain. If you want to make comparisons Thomas Jefferson Smith's no Allan Hunter, but he's a good 'un.

Allan, you were the most dominating and effective centre half I ever saw. Wembley final, Malcolm Mc Donald was terrified of you. Great player. GIve us a Wave Allan....

Like nearly everybody on here am pleased for Tommy, who as JAS says is always high up in the voting for player of the season( 3rd last year, despite being played out of position)

Think that is everybody of note signed up now, which is much better than our last two managers managed.

All we need now are 3 more players;so how about 1 on a free,1 on loan;and a 3rd being bought for MONEY>!

Good news this - now play him on his natural side - and we'll all see the very best of Tommy Smith.

This guy would run through a brick wall for our club(unlike some other shoed in favourites!!) play him in his best position with a fully fit Webster beside him and that pairing will serve us for 4-5 seasons, his contract is great news and he has never complained about being played on the right side of the back 4 while getting hammered by some on here Tommy you are a true blue!!!

Good news but only if MM plays him left side. His distribution on right is poor. He definitely looked more comfortable against Colchester with proper right sided defender next to him. My one concern is that he doesn't move forward with ball even if there's space but perhaps that's down to MM. Yet he doesn't lack skill. Time for Berra to go sadly now we've plenty of cover

Good news...our most consistent defender last season.

What on earth is going on about the transfer/loan news though!?! really disappointing to now.

At last a bit of good news, really thought he would be on his way when I saw e few teams sniffing around for roughly the same price we paid for Webster

Brilliant news that Tommy has signed a new deal. I can only echo the sentiments of others and say that in my eyes he now has to be considered as our best defender and had added consistency to his game that was a little lacking previously. Tommy is blue through and through and is committed to the club. Think he's slightly better on the ball than Berra and tried at times to bring the ball out from the back. Remember some of the midweek games he was excellent.

Pleased!!! And furthermore I can envision a SMITH & WEBSTER partnership -- which sounds sufficiently "weaponlike" to potentially scare the pants of opposing forwards! lol -- in a year or two.

Speaking of such a cooool named business partnership, I personally only know of 1 -- which is based somewhere along the beautiful Carnoustie Bay area (just above the well-known golf courses there) -- which in lack of better alternatives can suffice as today's little Zzzilly Trivia :-)

Guess what they specialize in??? (Hint: Which at least a is little bit funny imho, since ironically it rhymes PERFECTLY with "Hoofing"! HeHe)

Great News, play him in his natural position and let's see how the Smith/Knudsen left sided partnership works. Webster looks a natural on the ball and could well complement Chambers, who is not a bad right back, but has never had the benefit of a natural right sided partner. The signing of Digby is also a plus IMO, good cover for the centrebacks, but could be used as a centre midfielder, tall, good in the air and with a good range of passing, plus very noisy and demanding.

There isn't a defender in the Premier League that could hold a candle to Kevin Beattie when he was fit?
Or does anyone who actually saw KB play disagree with that statement?
