McCarthy: EFL Should Get More Premier League Cash
Saturday, 17th Sep 2016 06:00

Blues boss Mick McCarthy believes more of the Premier League’s wealth should be distributed to EFL clubs in order to level the playing field.

Town face Aston Villa at Portman Road this afternoon, one of a number of clubs in the division with the benefit of substantial parachute payments having been relegated from the Premier League last season.

Villa are understood to be set to receive £87 million over three years if they remain out of the top flight for that period, £40 million this season, £33 million in 2017/18 and £14 million the following year.

Asked whether parachute payments should be scrapped, McCarthy said: “I think more money should be put into the clubs that are in the Football League.

“People might ask why that is, well it might make it a fairer platform. It might make it a more level playing field.

“I don’t know, but I think it’s weighted far too much towards the top. If you consider the £1.1 billion [spent by Premier League clubs in the summer transfer window], there’s a £100 million that’s gone out in agents’ fees and to other people who have got nothing to do with football. That’s a helluva chunk of dosh.

“What could we do with that? And League One and League Two. I think more money should be put into it.”

However, McCarthy sees taking on the clubs with parachute payments or those whose owners are splashing out very large sums of cash as a challenge.

He added: “I’m not worried about it whatever they get, I quite enjoy punching against the big boys that have got all the money because it pleases me all the more when we beat them, like we did on Tuesday.”

The only sport in the world where you get rewarded for being a failure. The three teams that came down got relegated for a reason yet they get millions for not being good enough. Makes it worthwhile being a yo-yo club.

what is annoying about the ffp is that only a handful abide by it whilst others totally ignore it and get get away with it.
The only penalty should be points deduction retrospectively and amended promotions and relegations.

The irony of parachute payments is they only camein because ITFC went bust after relegation so we never benfited then and now have to compete aginst it.

The whole thing stnks.

I agree completely with MM that the money being spent by PL clubs is obscene and more should be forced down into other leagues. Regretfully that's not going to happen any time soon and the clubs coming down with parachute payments together with other championship clubs with owners prepared to splash the cash are just going to create a 2 tier EFL of have's and have not. Unfortunately I suspect we will fall into the have not camp and the dream of returning to the PL will just becomes harder and harder.

I can see Mick's point about parachute payments and the amount of money being thrown about at the top level of the sport and agree with an above poster that it is effectively rewarding 3 teams for being relegated. But the real reason that Mick wants this money filtered down, is because our owner has tightened the purse strings and limited his backing. Why don't you have a conversation with Evans, who you claim to get on so well with and say any chance of giving me some proper backing??

I disagree, the clubs that are in the Premier League, or have been promoted & subsequently relegated have won the right to a share of the money, clubs (like us) who haven't done enough to be part of the Premier League, don't deserve a share, surely that's the whole point of being promoted to the Premier League. Let me put it another way, would any if you give away a percentage of your salary to someone poorer, just because they don't earn as much as you, I doubt it.
