Town to Face Lincoln in FA Cup
Monday, 5th Dec 2016 21:50

Town will play Lincoln City at Portman Road in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup, the Imps having beaten Oldham Athletic 3-2 at Sincil Bank in their second round tie this evening.

Ex-Derby striker Theo Robinson (2) and Terry Hawkridge netted the goals which saw Lincoln, who are managed by former Braintree boss Danny Cowley, into a 3-0 lead over the League One Latics, before Peter Clarke and Billy McKay were on target as the visitors staged an ultimately unsuccessful comeback.

The Blues and Lincoln, who are currently second in the Vanarama National League and are undefeated in 15 games in all competitions, have never previously met in the FA Cup.

They last played one another in the league in Town's 1960/61 Division Two championship season when Sir Alf Ramsey's side ran out 3-1 winners at home and 4-1 away.

Overall, Town have won five of the games between the sides, all of which have been in the second tier, and Lincoln three with two ending in draws.

The tie, which was first out of the hat when the draw took place at the BT Tower earlier this evening, is likely to take place on Saturday 7th January, although that’s yet to be confirmed.

The Lincoln squad includes defender Lee Beevers, who came through the Town academy and was a young pro at Portman Road before being released in the summer of 2003 without making a senior appearance. The 33-year-old was previously with the Imps between 2005 and 2009 before rejoining them after leaving Mansfield in the summer of 2015.

Boss Mick McCarthy is yet to win an FA Cup tie as Blues manager. Town's last FA Cup win was the 2-1 victory at Blackpool at the third round stage in January 2010 under Roy Keane’s management.

Last season the Blues were beaten at the third round stage by League Two Portsmouth - featuring Adam Webster - after a replay.

Oh well.

Hands-up who thought we'd beat league two Pompey last year?

Still, we can now concentrate on the league........

I love the fa cup and would love a run in it. Please MM do not treat this game like you treat the fans, with contempt! A good run would help the confidence no end!

Dont forget we will have our 2 new young hungry strikers in by then and a midfield player who can actually pass the ball----(am i deaming!?) which should all have been done in the summer of course.

McCarthy, no excuses, just win the game. We deserve a cup run after the last few seasons.

Evans, if it's only the £ that matter think how much we lose by not competing

Get ready for humiliation McCarthy has no respect for the FA Cup expect the reserves to turn out as we are far too bitter club to worry about Little Lincoln

Some of the comments here are just ridiculous! Completely agree with Currie. MM will make changes and if the players in our squad can't beat a non league side then they simply don't deserve to be in our squad in the first place. I expect, Emmanuel, Kenlock and Dozzel will all start and these are the ones majority of fans are crying out for us to play.

Another embarrassing exit on its way, reading through the words below it would appear our most loyal captain has his own fears as well.
When will the glory days come back..?

Ipswich Town will have arguably their best chance of a first win in an FA Cup match under Mick McCarthy when they take on National League side Lincoln City at Portman Road in the third round next month.

Former Blues captain Mick Mills (pictured with the cup and 1978 Ipswich goal-scorer Roger Osborne) is calling on the manager to name as strong a first eleven as possible, and treat the competition with respect.

"I'm very disappointed that clubs play weaker teams early on and cheapen this competition," Mills said.

"The importance of it tends to come back at the quarter final stage, but that's too late.

"If Mick McCarthy was to change everybody then the team will still look good on paper, but it won't have played together much.

"So while you might get one or two individual performances, you won't necessarily get a team performance."

I think that the negative comments posted on this shows the current poor feeling towards the team surely Evans must be taking notice crowds are dropping as fast as our league position something is broken and needs to be changed

Be nice for Lincoln to get through to the 4th round.

So if we beat them, can all the "Mick out" brigade repost all their negativity...now that would be funny, but they wont do it.
In Mick i trust.

An interesting tie. Yes, it seems obvious that MM should give our younger/fringe players a chance to shine... but to what real purpose? Even if they run out 6-0 winners against Lincoln you can be pretty sure that MM will be back to same 3-D team and tactics for the following league game i.e.defensive, dull and dreary.
