Town Sign Former Trialist Spence
Monday, 16th Jan 2017 16:15

Town have announced the signing of former West Ham and MK Dons right-back Jordan Spence on a contract to the end of the season. The 26-year-old was on trial with the Blues in September and October when he featured for the U23s matches at Bolton and at home to Liverpool.

Free agent Spence was released by the MK Dons last summer having joined them initially on loan in 2013 from West Ham where he came through the youth ranks.

While with the Hammers the Londoner also had spells on loan at Leyton Orient, Scunthorpe, Bristol City and Sheffield Wednesday.

Spence was capped by England at U16, U17, U18, U19 and U21 levels.

Following his trial with the Blues, Spence had similar spells with Rotherham United and Birmingham City.

The new signing, who trained with the squad this morning, is not available for Tuesday's FA Cup third round replay at Lincoln as he wasn't a Town player for the initial tie.

No problems with this at all. Could be a very shrewd signing. Chambers to go back to CB and then Emmanuel and Spence to fight it over thr RWB role. Sorted.

Hardly an inspiring signing. Saying that, will be good to have a natural right back. People worried about Emmanuel not being in the side? Overrated just because he's 'one of our own'

Let's give the lad a chance! Would the moaners on here grumble so much if he was to turn out to be another Mings or Cresswell?

........ anything that increases the chance of Chambo playing in the centre (his correct, and best position) at last - has to be an improvement.

If that happens, a bit of competition for the RB position will be healthy.

A potentially good move MM - I have to say. Totally in agreement with that.

Chambo hasn't been treated too well by MM - being expected to play totally out of position for far, far too long.

Well for all the talk; so far have only managed to sign a non league player for £10k,and one who has been without a club for 7 months and in that time rejected by ourselves Rotherham and Birmingham after trials.

However it is initially only short term, and presumably to bolster a smallish squad decimated by injury.

Just hope this is not the end of signings in this window,as feel we still need a midfield general, and another striker;but suppose if Mick doesn't get them in Skusey could step up to that mf role, and Kieffer could be given a chance up front?

..... Spence has a good pedigree in his early career - sometimes, for whatever reason, it doesn't happen for them immediately.

This is an opportunity for him, if he has the ability, which i would suggest he has. Definitely worth a punt.

Good Luck Jordan - what comes next, will hopefully be up to you .......

The signings of Moore and Spence are the build-up to the main event, right?

Right?

I would assume this is for rb cover due to berra possibly moving on,meaning chambers goes centre and we only then have 1 rb

This is good for the squad as we're very light compared with other clubs. (QPR had 30% more than us). Seem to be getting cover but need a few first 11s esp centre forward and young holding mf with Bish and Hyam out for so long

Good competition for Emmanuel. I'm not going to even mention that MM has been playing Chambers out of position for all but the lifetime of his contract and that now that we have been flirting with relegation he chooses to mix things up and get a proper right back and that the innovative 3-at-the-back system, with Chambers in his proper position, is what should have been an obvious tactical alternative prior to his one and only one's defensive system's incessant failure. Not mentioning that at all.

Well I wish him well but it looks as if we are feeding on scraps and sweepings once again.

Could well prove to be an astute signing. You don't get to play for England U16, U17, U18, U19 and U21 unless you're an outstanding talent. Seems like he may have lost his way after that early promise, and who's to say he won't find it again with us?

Milton Keynes fans had some interesting observations about him when we played them last season. Here are their comments about him before our December game in 2015...

“The problem we have at the back is a noticeable lack of pace, Jordan Spence excluded”, “Robbo's very much aware that Spence is now a key component in our attacking play”, “He fills the role of modern attacking full-back so well”, “He was great going forward against Fulham as usual.”

“Jordan Spence struggled to do the basics at Brentford.” The 25-year-old ex-West Ham right-back “couldn't compete with Wolves winger Jordan Graham who bossed him on our right side”, “He looked a bit dodgy when being attacked by their winger but we coped overall.”

Here are their thoughts about him last April...

“I rate Jordan Spence and think he's a decent right-back.” The 25-year-old former Hammer “is a natural defender”, “A speedy player with a good work rate”, “At times this season he has looked exhausted and out of ideas. He undeniably has talent and needed a rest to return to form.”

“Spence has been reliable and at times our best player on the pitch. He is strong, quick and athletic”, “Our player of the season until about November but his form has been just okay since”, “He seems to have been wiped out by playing week-in and week-out in a team which keeps getting beaten.”

Nothing to be alarmed about on either assessment and he could blossom under Mick's tutelage. This would also allow a wider rejig of the back four were Chambers to move inside. It looks a really sensible move on a number of levels.

Maybe why we have signed a RB.........if Chambers is in the middle as cover for Emmanual

At 6'2" he might well be able to also provide cover for the CB's, if we continue to use the 352/532 system. If a big bid came in for Webster or if one of Saturday's three got injured, we dont appear to have many fit alternatives.

Furthermore, it is a long time since we had a back 4 capable of reading the game which you need in a 442 and had two vocal centre backs with a good understanding who can organise a defence.

If you haven't got that, to me playing with 3 CB may be a safer option. I dont think Digby or Smith as CB, or Emmanuel or Kenlock as FB, have yet shown that they can consistently operate at Championship level in a 442 but all, including Spence (RWB or RCB), may be comfortable in a 352/532.

This is rather strange reading the EADT Marcus Evans is giving super Mick all the money he needs as he doesn't want Super Mick to leave in the summer now he signs a conference player for 10k and a RB we certainly don't want ,just think what this does to Emanuels confidence he is as good a prospect as we have seen for a while now Super Mick signs a RB MK dons don't rate pretty pathetic MCCarthy OUT
