Milne: Stay With Mick
Wednesday, 18th Jan 2017 10:54

Town MD Ian Milne has urged fans to “stay with” manager Mick McCarthy and his team, despite last night’s humiliating FA Cup exit at Lincoln City.

Supporters have reacted angrily to the 1-0 defeat at Sincil Bank, only the Blues' second FA Cup defeat to non-league opposition since they joined the Football League, Peterborough United having won 3-2 in the third round at Portman Road in 1960.

In a statement to BBC Suffolk, Milne said: "Over the two matches Lincoln City were clearly the better organised team. That resulted in them deserving to win and we should, and have, congratulated them.

"We clearly did not perform to the standard we can do and an example of that is the good win we got against Blackburn last Saturday.

"However, nobody in the squad takes any pleasure in producing that type of football in front of our great away fans or indeed to the wider television audience.

"As usual Mick had been honest in his after-match comments and I have nothing to add to that regarding the game.

"I would add that over the last few days we have added players to the squad and we have bids in for others.

"So in these difficult times we would ask our fans to stay with Mick and the boys as we make improvements to the squad and get our injured players match fit, as our aim is to return to winning, entertaining football as we started to do against Blackburn."

We are clearly in a mess, but I don't really see how you can expect Milne, Evans's mouthpiece, to say anything very different. He even says Lincoln were better organised (not difficult because I don't think we were organised at all), which is surely somewhat of a veiled criticism of McC. However, we are probably not going to get a change of manager any time soon, we are probably not going to get in anyone of note during the transfer window, and we are probably not going to suddenly start playing something recognisable as professional football as opposed to amateur kickabout. Hopefully, we will avoid relegation, but that's not a given. So those of us who are not willing to abandon the club will just have to get used to the situation and hope for a brighter future somewhere down the line.

I am innately reluctant to sack a Manager - Mick McCarthy has previously been very successful at Sunderland, Wolves and managed to take Ireland to the Quarter-Finals of the World Cup, so to hurl abuse at him is both unnecessary and factually inaccurate. He clearly isn't a footballing idiot.

However, on the basis that MM, TC et al spend every day of the week training the players and drilling matchday plans into them I found what I saw last night to be highly worrying. The players didn't look like they had a plan nor the ability to actually string more than 3 passes together. This means either they aren't being told to do it, don't have the ability to do it or have lost the desire to do as the Manager is asking. All of these means something is very wrong.

Mr Milne makes himself look foolish when he points to the fact that we have signed two individuals - their track records clearly suggest that they do not have the calibre of what we need to improve the squad and are either squad fillers or hopeful punts for the future at best.

Quite clearly the buck stops with Mr Evans. He either takes the view that fresh managerial blood is required - and on the evidence of last night that may well be the case - or invests to improve the overall ability of the squad.

There is the other option of carrying on regardless. A situation that I don't think does MM any favours either (he's operating on such a tight budget that delivering success is neigh on impossible).

My other fear is that we need to be realistic about what success is. Given the current financial constraints it is arguable that MM is being successful. Firing MM and then what - more attractive yet less effective football leading to League One? I cite the example of Blackburn fans calling for Sam Allardyce's head whilst he was there - he went, they plummeted.

I don't have the answers. Not sure anyone does.

Sorry, bit of a ramble but felt the need to vent.

COYB (please!)

We've fallen off a cliff and are plummeting to lows not many of us have witnessed at this club, whilst all those above who could help us have their f-in heads stuck in the sand.

There was only two things you could say today Milne - "Mick McCarthy has been relieved of his duties" or "We here at the club are incredibly sorry for last nights performance and are looking to re-pay fans who spent their hard earned money on buying a ticket for last nights game"

IF you couldn't say one you HAD to say the other.

Milne posing in front of an empty stadium is a bit worrying. Better get the ITFC PR team on this before the next statement is issued!!

I am so angry reading this... what will it take for him to go?! How can milne and Evans justify keeping someone that produces such dire football resulting in fans not attending in their droves... why was it left until January to frantically try to get bids in for players at a time they have admitted it is hard to sign.

We have an owner who doesn't care, who won't invest to compete pushing our club into mediocrity, we have a manager that I think stopped caring last year with no funds, just happy to collect his pay packet. We have players that are either frustrated at playing out of position or just don't seem to care, others are just very very poor.

I cannot see any positives about ipswich town any more, I honestly don't care if we win or lose as long as we have a bloody good go at winning, im a supporter through and through but right now I wish I could walk away and distance myself from all this so I don't have to feel so angry and frustrated at our current situation. In all my years of supporting town, ive never felt this upset.

Any chance of MM and the squad donating their match fees to charity as a way of apologising for the terrible performance last night? I said they would embarrass us all on TV - and they did

And you still think MM is the answer?! Goodness me we are well and truly in trouble.

@ Lightningboy

Yes they are very poor. If you go back to some midfield players that Town have had over the years they were regularly contributing goals, in fact I think Simon Miltons ratio of goals to games was somewhere around 1 in 3 and I daresay John Walk at his prime was better still. Holland and Magilton were regular scorers but equally created many goals for the strikers but were very good at holding the ball up and slowing the game down when needed as well as chasing back if we lost the ball to win it back.
It has been far too long since we have had a real good central midfield pairing but the annoying thing is we probably have better on the bench than what Mick plays!

I feel that Mr Macarthy as a MANAGER is limited now in todays football in the constraints of our club.
I feel Mr Mccarthy as A director of football helping to continue to recruit and sign players for a younger more ipwich style head coach some one with an ITFC back ground would be so so much better.

I feel the constant berating of our club and the currant staff and players has to STOP the booing the derogatory comments how can it help our team.

there our players whom will move on in the summer(Berra, Chambers?) or who will probably hang there boots up(Douglas) why would anyone want them to be there last 6 months working for us be blighted by booing and negativity what a horrid way to end a career or job. some of whom have been for fantastic for us.

Yes our season is gonna end in obscurity
Yes our style and play is aweful.
yes the club has lost its way

AND YES I go to games !!!

now is the time to pull together to cheers them on to take our club back to give our team the support they deserve.

You are deluded old boy.....

The only applicable, acceptable and common-sense decision is to 'Stay with' the wife and kids, at home!

And finally, I disagree, we clearly did perform to the standard that we regularly do...........it is what we not wearing rose tinted spectacles see virtually every damn game.

In other words.... "Keep faith, at least for another month. If things still don't improve, we'll sack him just before we release season ticket renewals...."

How the can Milne say that with a straight face?

MM clearly doesn't give a toss any more (did he ever give a toss about cup games though?), and that's rubbing off on the players. We need either a young manager with buckets of enthusiasm or someone who's ITFC through and through and actually cares about the club.

Even mentioned in the House of Commons, Prime Minister congratulates Lincoln and says how useless must the Ipswich manager be?

Lincoln win 'fitting tribute' to Graham Taylor

Tory MP Karl McCartney brings up Lincoln City's FA Cup upset last night, when they beat Ipswich.

The prime minister picks up on this, congratulating the team and saying it was a "fitting tribute" to their former manager Graham Taylor, who died last week.

Lol. So many justifications for a change made on here today and yet worryingly there are more:
1. Our scouting is dreadful and has been since MM arrived. More interested in playing golf and ruining decent players (Sears, Ward, Bishop) than getting out there with a clear recruitment strategy and finding gems. Just remembering some lad from a game v Yeovil doesn't do it (but good luck lad - take your chance).
2. Blaming our woes on strikers so trying to find more when clearly it is midfield and right back where the problems start beggars belief. Skuse bang average and negative like the Manager. Douglas and Bru occasionally ok but not for this level. To play 2 or often 3 of them together indicates no clue about football (and I coach it and played it so yes I can have a view on this thanks).
3. I think he's been after a way out fir at least 6 months. Piss off customers. Put no effort in. Confront customers. Do same thing all the time when it doesn't work. Blame others. I rest my case. Annoying that he'll get a pay off when it comes but it is a Joke and it has to stop.

Ian Milne, you are as clueless as your predecessor.

The only reason why you are not getting rid of Mick is because you will have to pay him out.

MICK OUT.

No, you have lost me. I have been forced to choose another club to follow as I am not getting any younger. Mick and the Evans mob have done me a favour though as I am now enjoying the Prem games now I have an interest. I never used to understand fans following Prem clubs as well as Town...I am a slow learner. I would prefer to go back to supporting Town only but I believe those days are gone even if MM leaves.

The football has never been great under Mick, I can live with a that of we are pushin for the play offs

But...

The dispaly last night was the worst I have ever seen from Town. In 30 years I have never seen us so lacklustre, so toothless and lacking is so much desire. I hope that tea cups were thrown and football boots kicked in the dressing room after.

What I find most dissapointing is the lack of fight and desire. Micks teams have always shown heart and it is the lack of it that worries me more than anything else
. Even the Lincoln fans taking the piss for 90 mins couldnt fire them up! Appalling.

That team, regardless of our own feelings about it, should beat Lincoln all day every day. No questions. We played them twice in 2 weeks and looked 2nd best each time.

To be fair the back 4 were at least diligent I'm their defensive duties. Grant and Lawrence at least atempted to play football when they revived the trickle of service thhat they did.

Everyone else looked like they didn't want to be there, didn't much fancy a trip to Lincoln on a Tues eve, figured they would win and didn't try.

Douglas can't pick a lass for toffee, Skuse was anonymous, what the hell has happened to Leon Best, clealy a shadow of the player he could have become, totally Imobile, the furthest I sore him run was to the touchline when he got subbed. Defenders whilst diligentlacked any ideas beyond hoof and there were times when even the simplest of positive passes were ignored in order to pass back, square or to Gerkin who then hoofed it into touch.

We lacked a plan, we lacked vision, we lacked desire, we lacked heart.

Me (and to say I am crap at football is an insult to crap) and 10 of my mates could have put in a better performance. It's not even the result that bothers me, it happens to the best of us but the manner of it I just cannot take. Nor should we have to?

Stick with Mick? I did, but it's not possible any longer.

Yes we have an injury crisis, not an excuse. Not against Lincoln FFS.

Dross. $hite. Crap. Abject and yes EMBARRASSING

Shut the f@.k up Milne you deluded man. Evans is to blame for not giving sufficient funds, but this complete goon in charge picks the team, signs the players and trains the players to play this way. He hasn't got an idea what to do so resorts to arrogance. Danny Cowley has proved that a team can be built to play football on limited funds, and he totally schooled the arrogant Northern Tw.t twice. This boll...ks about him being a decent man doesn't wash! Do the decent thing and resign. I'm not sure I can stay away as this is the club I have loved for over 40 years, but us fans seriously need to protest. Maybe outside on matchdays and don't go in, or follow Charlton's lead with sit down protest or holding up play. I hate to talk like this but we cannot let this carry on. I don't like booing either, but these measures are the only way we will get Evans to do something. I never thought I would see the day when our club would hit these desperate levels. What a sad day for our beloved club, it breaks my heart to see it being run this way
