McGoldrick in Ireland Squad for Mexico Friendly
Tuesday, 30th May 2017 16:53

Town striker David McGoldrick has been named in a reduced 19-man Republic of Ireland squad for their friendly with Mexico at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey in the early hours of Friday morning (Premier HD, from 1am).

Manager Martin O’Neill and his assistant, former Blues boss Roy Keane, selected a 37-man party for their June matches with a number of senior players, including ex-Town skipper Jon Walters, not involved in the Mexico game but linking with the squad ahead of Sunday’s friendly with Uruguay in Dublin.

The games are in preparation for the World Cup qualifier against Austria on Sunday 11th June, also in Dublin.

McGoldrick, who along with his former Blues strike partner Daryl Murphy took part in a three-day training camp at the Fota Island resort in Cork last week, will be looking to add to his five caps and open his international goals account.

The 29-year-old’s ex-Town team-mate Stephen Hunt believes the Blues number 10 could have a major role to play as Ireland look to reach next summer's finals in Russia.

“I have said for a long time that David McGoldrick will have a big part to play in this World Cup campaign,” Hunt wrote in his column in the Sunday Independent.

“He is the best striker Ireland have in terms of football ability. I saw first-hand at Ipswich the quality he has, but he has suffered little niggles and injuries.

“When he has come on as a sub for Ireland in the past, he's looked like he has already been on the pitch for an hour.

“International football is tough, particularly when you are new and coming into games as a substitute. But you have to be ready at all times to get on that pitch and make a difference for your country.

“Like McGoldrick, the majority of players in the squad play in the Championship, but I do not see that as a problem and that is the way it is always going to be with the Ireland squad.

“There are so many foreign players in Premier League squads now, not just the starting XIs, that it is becoming increasingly difficult for young Irish and even British players to break through.

“When I was a Championship player I played some of my best football for Ireland. It is a totally different game and team so it evokes different emotions and feelings in a player and they can inspire you. That's what McGoldrick needs.

“He needs to get fully fit and be ready to get into the pace of games when he gets his opportunity because there is no doubt that he is capable of producing a bit of magic which can make all the difference in tight games, particularly at this level.”

Town duo Tommy Smith and Monty Patterson have joined the rest of the New Zealand squad in Belfast ahead of their friendly against Northern Ireland on Friday (Premier HD, from 7.30pm).

The match is part of the All Whites’ pre-tournament programme ahead of the Confederations Cup in Russia later in the month.

They face League of Ireland side Cabinteely in Dublin next Tuesday with head coach Anthony Hudson picking his final squad for the trip to Russia two days after that match.

Meanwhile, Cedarwood Primary School in Kesgrave, representing Town, were beaten 2-1 in the final of the EFL Kinder+ Sport Kids Cup by Derby’s Etwall Primary ahead of yesterday’s Championship play-off final at Wembley.

Skipper Reuben Swann pulled a late goal back for the young Blues but they were unable to find an equaliser.

Elsewhere, Town are joint-third favourites for relegation from the Championship in 2017/18, according to SkyBet.

Barnsley and Burton are co-favourites for the drop at 15-8 with Town, Bolton and Millwall all at 3-1.

Republic of Ireland: Colin Doyle (Bradford), Darren Randolph (West Ham), Cyrus Christie, Alex Pearce, Richard Keogh (all Derby), Shane Duffy (Brighton), Andy Boyle (Preston), Kevin Long (Burnley), John Egan (Brentford), Eunan O’Kane (Leeds), Alan Browne, Daryl Horgan (both Preston), Conor Hourihane (Aston Villa), Wes Hoolahan (Norwich), Stephen Gleeson (Birmingham), Callum O’Dowda (Bristol City), James McClean (West Brom), David McGoldrick (Ipswich), Daryl Murphy (Newcastle).

The way the club is being run is a f***ing disgrace. It's going to be another transfer window of old aged freebies. Another season of derogatory football being played in front of 8k. Ipswich Town has just turned into a business, and as things stand, it will be the same process every season.

Has he now played more times for Ireland than he has for us in the past few years?

My downvote was entirely deliberate Yungblue as i have know idea what your post has to do with this news item which is nice and positive. I also think the club is being run quite sensibly. Might not be the most exciting time to be a town fan at least we're not gambling the clubs future.

Comes to something when Cedarwood Primary School get 8 lines, yet TWTD only dedicates 3 lines to report that SkyBet make us joint 3rd favourites for relegation next season, come TWTD surely this is news worthy of more in the current climate of ill feeling? Or dare I suggest that we "do not want to rock the corporate boat"?

"Break A Leg" .... NOT! Didz Dearest :-)

In other imho much more exciting recent news ...... as it's now been 3+ weeks since the season ended and we haven't heard diddly-squat about the Dino's continuing employment or anything else! from neither Media **Phobic** (and then some!) Marvelous Marcus nor his immaculate 'Mouth Piece' the equal parts clueless equal parts deluded' Snake Oil Salesman Extraordinaire' Ian Milne ..... here is brand new serious "Food for Thought" :

1) First of all to all those who are irreversible fed up with Marcus and/or beyond infuriated with the new partly disrespecting partly incoherent ITFC ticket pricing, check out this little story from yesterday:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-4552904/Huddersfield-promoted-

and although Ipswich is not quite Huddersfield from a debt perspective etc. (although as I have explained numerous times much of ITFC's annual debt -- incl. the broken-record-like-sounding "alleged 5-6 mill of ME's own (pocket)money" -- has until very recently been pretty much been OFFSET (and maybe more!) by the heavily corporate tax-deductibility of ITFC's debt!!!), the most interesting fact about these here very **fine** Huddersfield prices for next season is that were announced in March i.e. well before they actually got promoted to enriching 'The Promised Land'!

2) Secondly other local media like EADT have today recounted unproudly of course the fact that ITFC currently are joint second favorites to get relegated from the Championship next season!
As Sky Bet have just listed ITFC as 3-1 to be relegated, the same price as they give Bolton and newly-promoted Millwall. Only Burton and Barnsley, at 15-8, are considered more likely to go down next season.

(n contrast, Dino McCarthy's scaringly often fan deterring as in duller than a door knob, hoof susceptible 'proper blokes' are in it's current state i.e. no drastic reinforcements, listed at 50-1 to win the league and 14-1 to clinch promotion.

PS: Both these stories are thus revolving around significant matters that I believe most members very much would like TWTD themselves to query 'The Beleaguered Regime' about , that is when you eventually get hold of one or more it's seemingly STILL golf playing or basking-in-the-sun-margaritas-sipping stooges! :-)

Good luck Didzy hope it goes well.

Terrynutkins I haven't voted you down as rarely do vote people down but I suggest by doing exactly the same every year when the entertainment is dire, the prices are too high, the crowds are dwindling & the manager won't change the owner is gambling the future of the club?

Mr Evans puts money in to keep the club afloat but sells a player every summer to cover the loss. His problem this year maybe we don't have any that will sell for good money!

Don't forget folks we will get a 5% discount if/when season ticket sales hit 12750 by the 4th August lol.

Only way this will happen is if he parts,by mutual consent naturally, with Mick McCarthy before then;otherwise a visit to the bookies beckons!

Aye I agree there is "maybe one" @runningout that ME could sell .... to cover losing SOME money, as in not necessarily in the range of the at a minimum always proverbially mentioned "5-6 mill" as even though the new much stricter UK Tax Laws from April 1 targeting exactly corporations who for long have used debt to grossly reduce their tax bill, aim to notably diminish the over-all benefits, corporate debt is to my understanding still inherently tax-deductible (but now to a much smaller advantageous degree) in the UK incl. Guernsey where ME and/or part of his empire is having one among a multitude of addresses I believe --- or rather actually simply make ANY kind of profit/pocket some money (with ITFC) at all, which I naturally suspect is very much in ME's nature to do as a successful businessman, but btw allegedly (ticket-scams etc.) also a very shady businessman at that!

The player in question is of course the from our future survival Championship perspective then quite "PRICELESS" King Bart .... but just yesterday there actually became one less potential PL bidder, which is 'Good News' imho :-), as one of my personal earlier few legitimate PL favorites to land him namely severely defensively troubled Bournemouth opted to sign Asmir Begovich.
But since ME "of course" :-) is immensely football clueless!!!!!!!!! we might very well still lose Bart before August for the above mentioned purely £-fixated ME reasons only.
But if so I sincerely hope it isn't to a much richer or financially daring Championship rival --- which would make me sick! --- nor to a somewhat dubious run foreign top tier club where he imho easily risk being warming the bench much too often --- which would be an outright shame! --- because they might fail to truly understand the Poles greatness and game changing & MOTM abilities the way we do here.
