McCarthy Understands Celina's Frustration But Points to the League Table
Monday, 21st Aug 2017 16:38

Boss Mick McCarthy says he understands why Bersant Celina, signed on loan for the season from Manchester City, is frustrated at not having made his league debut so far but points the Kosovo international, who has been unwell for much of his time with the Blues, towards the current Championship table with Town second on goal difference alone behind leaders Cardiff.

The 20-year-old’s only game for Town so far was the 2-0 win at Luton in the Carabao Cup and he will play at Crystal Palace in the same competition tomorrow.

McCarthy says he’s aware that the winger or number 10 is frustrated at not yet breaking into the first team for a Championship game.

“He is, he’s not happy about it, but I’ll send him a copy of the league,” McCarthy said. “And he’s been poorly for six weeks or something on and off.

“So, they can be be as frustrated as they want if they’re not in the team, but I’m not going to change it.

“There’s only one person that can have an effect on that when they’re out of the team, like Myles Kenlock did, like Bersant can.

“They can affect me by what they do and they affect me when they do it positively and they affect me in such an awful way when they annoy me by being sulky and not doing it properly, when they do get a chance not doing it properly. They get custard-pied completely then.

“But, by the way, he hasn’t done, but I know he’s getting frustrated, he wasn’t happy, he wants to be in the team. Well, everybody wants to be in the team. I haven’t met a player yet that doesn’t want to play.”

The Blues boss says Celina, who spent last season on loan with FC Twente in Holland, can get a good idea of what’s expected of him in terms of work-rate by watching Freddie Sears in action.

“For sure, I think there are one or two shining examples in my team, my squad,” McCarthy continued. “I’ve mentioned before, Luke Chambers played 46 games, every single minute of every game last year.

“How he played on having damaged his ankle as badly as he had on Tuesday night at Millwall is beyond me, I don’t know how he did it, I really don’t.

“Skusey, durable, consistent, plays there all the time, and the likes of Freddie, people like that. Even when he doesn’t score all the goals he never stops consistently running, harrying defenders, making it difficult for people. I think there are some really good examples for younger players to follow.”

He probably thought he'd be nailed on every game coming to lowly Ipswich. But like the rest he's got to do it on the training ground and prove himself. Not much to ask so hope he knuckles down and shows us why he's so highly regarded.
Perhaps he should give Tom a call as he started slowly!

Much prefer for us to play our youngsters rather than Man City's. Sounds like Mick isn't overly impressed with him - particularly the comment regarding the illness for past six weeks!

I'm glad he's frustrated unlike some of our young players who take the money and pee it up a wall!

Hope he doesn't end up like several others we have had; not getting a chance in the first team, like Tommy Oar, Jonny Parr and to a lesser extent Brett Pitman;all of whom I recall voiced their displeasure at not being in the first team.

I thought different players brought different talents to the team.Garner and Waghorn are not like like Didsy who again is different type of player to Cole Skuse or Freddie Sears

What little I have seen of Bersant Celina he seems very talented, and was a standout player in his only game so far against Luton,in fact I recall the Manager praised him,and said his work rate was greater than he had expected from him.

Yes, but MM not every player is a 100%er who runs all day. Celina seems to have a bit of star quality about him, need to accept him for the type of player he is otherwise why loan him? Really seems to where blinkers to those players that have a bit of skill or technique. He should be telling him to watch McGoldrick - that is a more like for like comparison.

sounds like a bit of a personality clash, dosnt bode well. i'd like to see him play, but equally whilst team is doing well I don't see point in rocking the boat for the sake of it.

Funny how MM picks our least talented players as an example. Good blokes though!! Celina could be different class but will he get a chance?

Was excited when we secured Celina, if he's struggling to get in the team now, what's going to happen when all are back fit?? Being what I call a flair player, might not work in his favour.

Celina by what I've heard (I think only played at Luton) did okay but he seems to be getting niggle illnesses like one or two others. Can't see any reason why Mick can't bring him on at least as a substitute, you've got to give at least a player some time on the pitch in Championship games before you judge him, all very well saying this is what Skuse, Sears, McG does.

Sounds like a problem waiting to happen - can see us sending him back sooner rather than later.

Should at least be coming on as a sub on Saturday against Fulham. Should have come on against Brentford as well.

Great player who needs to get some minutes under his belt.
