McCarthy: Huws Expected to Require Surgery
Thursday, 24th Aug 2017 15:14

Town boss Mick McCarthy says midfielder Emyr Huws is all but certain to have an operation on the achilles problem which has prevented the Wales international from featuring since rejoining the club on a permanent basis from Cardiff City in the summer.

Huws, who enjoyed a hugely successful loan spell last season, was due to play in the Carabao Cup tie at Crystal Palace on Tuesday before suffering a recurrence of the problem, which had hampered him since the start of pre-season.

“It looks like he’ll be having an operation,” manager Mick McCarthy said. “He’s got to go and see [consultant foot and ankle surgeon] James Calder on Tuesday and we’re hoping and praying it won’t be, but we’re pretty sure that it will be.

“So let’s announce that he’s going to have an operation and hope that he doesn’t have to have one, wouldn’t that be good rather than the other way around.”

Regarding Town’s other ill and injured, he added: “Skusey hasn’t trained, as you know, he was ill. He hardly carries that much weight Skusey to be able to lose too much, although diarrhoea and sickness is no good for anybody.

“But he’s been out and had a jog today, I’m sure he’ll be all right tomorrow I’m certain. But he couldn’t do too much today in case it weakened him and affected him for tomorrow and Saturday. He’ll be OK.

“Wardy’s all right, he’s trained. Didz was in, he’s trained, he’s fine. Everybody was available last week will be available and then we’ll have the lads that were in the squad on Tuesday night.”

On some of Town’s other longer term absentees there was better news with Luke Hyam (knee) and Tom Adeyemi (calf) both closing in on returns.

“Luke and Tom have every chance of being involved against QPR after the break,” McCarthy said.

“Tom’s trained today, it was great to see him out on the training ground and I can see all the reasons why I liked him. It was his first session.

“Luke Hyam played for 60 minutes on Monday, he’ll play 90 minutes at Portman Road for the U23s [against Sheffield United] next Tuesday and then we’re playing [Sheffield Wednesday] at Hillsborough on the Saturday, he’ll play in both those games.

“So, if he gets through both of those OK, he’ll be ready for QPR. Tom Adeyemi will take part in some of those games if he’s OK, which I think he will be.”

Skipper Luke Chambers (ankle), Tommy Smith (hamstring), Adam Webster (ankle), Teddy Bishop (groin surgery) and Andre Dozzell (cruciate) all remain sidelined.

For…f!ck…sakkeeeeee

I suppose the only good news from this is that no one else has picked up an injury. And we should be getting Adeyemi back for after the break.

Sorry to read that about Huws, hopefully not another player needing surgery. With Adeyemi and Hyam to come in, Ward, Skuse the emergence of Downs, Nydam, McDonnell presumably we will stick with what we have got with the priority still being a defender. Hoping to get along to the U23's game, anyone know who we are playing or where I can find a fixture list for these games?

So how did this Achilles' tendon problem just suddenly emerge over the close season then ??
If he has this operated on it could be bloody more this out not weeks ffs!

What the hell do we do in our training sessions to pick up so many non match day injuries . This isn't the first season this has happened. But the level of injuries this season is unprescidented.

Would be dreadful if huws and Dozzell have to sit the season out. I would say 2 certain starters in midfield at the start of the season.

Must have been injured when we signed him then? Hasn't even played a friendly has he?

Bad news either way, but wasn't he injured for quite a while at Cardiff?

I'd be surprised if we see him before Christmas...

Makes you wonder why we signed him so hastily if carrying n injury with his Achilles (and not really knowing the degree of damage).

Nice to see we now have 'Skusey' ill - I wonder if those hand sanitizers have been installed yet?

Huws, Bishop, Dozzell, all going to be missing for quite some time, it's quite a blow given that they are the players we have with a bit of guile about them in the middle of the park. Should Mick consider a loan option up to Christmas maybe?
Downes has been great and if Adeyemi comes in soon it certainly helps us in midfield, but both are 'put a foot in', 'box to box' type players, albeit good ones. Meanwhile Hyam will be looking at the Skuse role if he gets back in the match day squad.
I suppose Didz could drop back if needed, but the way he has started the season, and how he has linked with our 2 new signings up front, would make me very reluctant to see him switch away from that position.
Looks like Skuse, Downes & Ward will be our midfield starting options (please no injuries to them) for some time yet.

Jass you're right, we signed Huws when he was injured. How many injured players is this Vlub going to sign that will be out for months?? It's unbelievable really.

Nothing against the last few posters but if any town fan says they were against us signing emyr huws this summer i'd be pretty certain they're liars, or they have very short-term memories (or they just like whinging!).

Most of us were begging marcus evans to loosen the purse strings and get him in. So now, he's injured, so what if he misses a few months, not great admittedly but he signed a three year deal (I think from memory) so still great value in my eyes.

Let's just hope he's not out for too long cos he is real quality.

This season so far has been the tales of two kinds of luck. Bad luck with injuries against good luck with results. Being a firm believer in 'what comes around goes around' they might cancel each other out, which would not be a bad result thinking about it!!!!
