Ex-Blue McGreal Impressing Town Bosses - Report Friday, 26th Jan 2018 18:58 Former Blues defender and current Colchester United boss John McGreal is reportedly interesting Town as the club look around for a successor to Mick McCarthy.
According to the Daily Mail, McGreal’s growing reputation for bringing through young players at the Weston Homes Community Stadium has caught the eye of the Blues’ management.
McGreal, who made 148 starts and three sub appearances for Town between 1999 and 2004, scoring five goals, took over at Colchester in the summer of 2016 and the U’s are currently 11th in League Two, having finished eighth last season.
The 45-year-old former centre-half was a member of George Burley’s side which won a place in the Premier League via the 2000 play-off final at Wembley and then finished fifth in the top flight the next season to reach the UEFA Cup.
Liverpool-born McGreal joined the Blues from Tranmere for £650,000 and ended his career with Burnley after departing Portman Road.
Current Town boss McCarthy looks almost certain to move on at the end of the season, despite owner Marcus Evans having an option to keep him for a further two years.

Bring it on. The last time we stole a Colchester Utd manager things worked out well. Added bonus it upsets the upstarts up the road too :)

@Mjdery89 Agreed, Warburton would be a good appointment if we want a more tried-and-tested manager with a good track record.

Reality bites. Amusing how underwhelmed all those baying for MMs head are. What, we're not going to get Pep Guardiola? What an outrage! No, the alternative is the Colchester manager from Mid table Div 2 - and he's probably been operating on a bigger budget.

Bit of a silly argument your putting up Gcon...who's asking for a top flight manager on here? nobody!. I'd take Burley back in a shot or the Cowley Brothers (at Lincoln). You seem to think once Mick goes we'll be scraping the dregs of a barrel which is filled with league 2 or non league managers and considering McCarthy is one of the top earners in this league that won't be the case if Evans chooses to go with experience again.

Could do worse than McGreal but.... Anyone thought of Tony Mowbray? Doing a more successful job, 2nd in league 1 with Blackburn & strong Town links. All together now ... arm up ... flag up ... YOUR OFF SIDE!

A great manager who has done a great job at Exeter City is Paul Tisdale and I think he'd do a great job at Town.

Why does everyone keep raving about Burley? It's a bit like an ex girlfriend, you only remember the good times. 2nd season in the premier league, signing foreign has beens on big money, replacing the lads that had won promotion then finished 5th in the top flight the previous year. Finidi George played out of position for his entire ipswich career having the best debut any living soul had ever seen. Sending us into administration (which really was the beginning of our demise) who remembers us being in th bottom 3 and getting tonked at home to Grimsby? It's only the miracles performed by Joe Royal that papered over the cracks that was to be the steady demise of this club. We were on a slippery slope long before Evans and McCarthy

If our scouts only look to Ireland for players, maybe ME should be looking there for a manager as well. Oh God I should not have said that now it will happen. Any reason why this is not the sort of direction ME will take, look at his attitude to the club in general, reduce costs, looks like a nail on for me.

Hmmm me thinks male professional football is in dire need of more female managers... ...alas since I'm a "closet muppet" and thus ever soooo COMPLACENT with *everything* Jurassic going on at ITFC these last 6 seasons here,, not the least the ehhhh shall we call it: "super appealing & sympathetic" treatment of it's non-happie-clappie fans, well then quite naturally the venerable FIONA MCCARTHY is my no. 1 choice!!! :-) :-) lol OK mellow out now please, cause a much more SERIOUS *female* candidate of mine would be 43 year old Corinne Diacre ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corinne_Diacre ), who certainly did no worse than our dreaded bore & tactical inept Dino McCarthy. in the sense that in her 3 seasons managing the "alpha males" of Clermont Foot not only did she keep her team in the 2nd tier, she did so on a very akin minuscule shoestring transfer budget "spiced up" with loanees & freebees! But much more importantly imho: According to several reports Corinne Diacre is very MODERN thinking and full of drive & spirit! ...and further to quote this 2016 UK article ( https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/nov/29/corinne-diacre-drive-spirit-win ) an fine advocate of "THRILLING FOOTBALL" too! Wow Wow me says that's indeed very yummy sounding! lol ...or in other more simplified & proper words: EXACTLY what this moribund-looking & fan-exodusing club of ours, Marvelous Marcus's ITFC, really really needs! Period!

Get in I knew it! McGreal would be the ideal candidate for me he's still young obviously got some ITFC in his blood for playing for us and also part of the playoff winning team. This could be a Burley stroke two when we took him from Col u. Def worth a go!! John McGreal oooohhh John McGreal

Sorry, you may not agree with me,but Ipswich are a big club and we need an experienced manager.I think as nice a man John is he would not be the right man for us.

Alf Ramsey and Bobby Robson were hardly experienced managers when they arrived. It's ability rather than experience that matter. An ex-player that loves the club would be nice though.

Paul Tisdale of Exeter City - did a great job with Team Bath at University of Bath too - we should seriously consider trying to prise him from the West Country. Like the idea of Corinne Dacre too - how leading edge that would be, given that society is finally waking up to the 50% of the world that men hitherto have preferred to minimise their abilities and skills. Would be a great advert and marketing coup for Marcus Evans Group too!!

@BathBlue2 F**k me. You're the first person that has ever made me feel lucky that Marcus Evans will be picking our next manager. What an absolutely awful idea.
