McCarthy: Kenlock Would Have Benefited From Loan
Monday, 12th Mar 2018 15:07

Blues boss Mick McCarthy says he would like to have sent young left-back Myles Kenlock out on loan this season to gain more first team experience.

The 21-year-old made his 11th start of the season at left wing-back in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Sheffield United but looks set to drop out of the side for tomorrow’s visit from Hull City with Jonas Knudsen expected to be over his hamstring problem.

On the right Jordan Spence and Dominic Iorfa have vied for the other full-back or wing-back role all season and McCarthy would have liked to have seen similar competition on the left.

“What I would like is Myles to have given me that same problem, that I could toss a coin and they’d be equal, Jonas and Myles, although I thought Myles played well on Saturday,” the Town manager said.

“I think Jordan and Dom, it’s a tough old position that wing-back role and they’ve been pretty much equal, I think.”

McCarthy says Kenlock, who has now made 32 senior starts and two sub appearances without scoring, has made progress this season but might have made further strides if he’d been able to go out on loan.

“Of course he’s improved but we could have done with another left-back really so Myles could have gone out and played some football,” he added.

“There was a bit of interest and I think he could have gone and played some more games. He’s been back-up to Jonas and whenever he’s been called upon he’s done well.

“But 20 games in somebody’s team and let somebody else be the back-up, which we haven’t got, would have been perfect for him.”

South Londoner Kenlock is contracted to the Blues until the summer of 2019 with the club having an option for a further season.

No comparison between Iorfa and Spence in the wing-back role IMO, Iorfa is a far better option - Spence hasn't got the mobility or speed. However, as a fullback Spence is the better option, especially when he has the winger in front of him to provide that added protection he is the superior footballer. I'm just wondering when Emmanuel returns if he can get back in that starting XI? He looks an athlete and that certainly helps as a wing-back to have that stamina to get up and down that flank.

When has Kenlock ever let us down? Every time he has played the manager has always said how well he did... And then as soon as Knudsen is fit again Kenlock is dropped.

I've never really rated Knudsen. He has improved, and he has a good attitude, but he lacks quality. Going forward he has very little to offer and defensively he is always relying on others to bail him out.

Kenlock needs more experience, which you can only get from playing games, but he looks like a much better footballer to me. Somebody that can pass the ball, make intelligent runs, and cross the ball too. Given a proper chance I am sure he would prove he is the better option.

Let's hope a new manager is announced soon. Someone that will genuinely give everybody a chance, especially the younger players, and not have any favourites.

Agree with above, we need a Burley type manager to allow us to profit from the youth policy that's bearing fruit again. Kenlock and Emmanuel in the wingback/fullback positions in pre season, hopefully a mix of Webster, Chambers, Knudsen, Woolfenden in the centre. We should really be trying this out now though, the season has gone.

I think Kenlock will go on and be an exceptional player. Let's hope it's with us. I really rate the guy.

I prefer Kenlock to Knudson. Reason MM doesn't like him is because he is more attack minded!! If he only let him have a run of games he would improve enormously. He should be given the chance but MM would always play his favourite Knudson over him any day of the week. if you look at Kenlock stats they are better than Knudson.

I agree that Kenlock should have been given more games, but what do we know.
Also agree with Christiand that Iorfa is more comfortable at wing-back than full back and suits that position better than Spence. Still undecided about Spence because under pressure he looks suspects. Would see him as backup at best.

Knudsen is head and shoulders above Kenlock as a left back or a wing back. I can't really struggle to understand what people watch sometimes.

I cannot remember a worse performance by an ITFC player in such a short space of time than Spence on Saturday. His body language was a disgrace to the shirt of ITFC and it would not worry me if he did not play for ITFC again. He cost us the game at Fulham with a moment of stupidity and should have known better. Please MM do not play him tomorrow. Perhaps Connolly could revert there after all he can play there and could free up an attacking midfielder space - I wish.

i prefer knudsen at left back, kenlock at wing back. if we persist with the 3 at the back, hope we try knudsen there, looked like it could be his best position on the brief occasions where he's played there so far. doubt we'll have ccv next year, so let's start planning now...

But Mick,he plays very well everytime he is selected only to get dropped...that is not a fair competition...is it.
Played well on Saturday (not many can say that) but as expected will be dropped for Tuesday.
No need to go out on loan, give him an extended run in OUR team NOW !!!

This seems to happen a lot, any real competition to the chosen few are shipped out asap.
Also see Emmanuel and Moore,
The way he is treated gives the lad no confidence at all

Yeah! and get some dullard from the reserves of Wolves or Birmingham or the Emerald Isle to replace him on loan or as a freebie and then hardly see Kenlock again. We know how you operate Mick.

In Burley or Robson's day Kenlock and Emmanuel would IMO have been our established full back pairing for a couple of years by now and Downes would have had the best part of a Championship season under his belt. If they can learn on loan they could learn here, but that's just not McCarthy's way.

If he needs game time then let him have it here. Why the reluctance to give youth a chance here? Ryan Sessegnon at Fulham has taken the Championship by storm in this his second season. I believe he is still 17 or only just 18 and already being mentioned as a World Cup possibility. Had he come through our academy he would no doubt currently be on loan at Aldershot, Bromley or somewhere similar.
Nydam and Downes were excellent at the start of the season and certainly did not let the side down but now Downes is at Luton while we have Gleason and Nydam gets an occasional seat on the bench.
We are not going up or down and the majority of fans would love to see Nydam back in the team as well as appearances from Morris, Folami and the like...but will that happen? Not a chance with the Dino still in charge.

The only chance that Kenlock will get is if somebody is injured. At left centre back then Knudsen would take over and Miles would get a game.

If MM goes however it could be different;but we know that Mick NEVER drops Skuse,Chambers or Knudsen unless they are injured, and regardless of their performance

Kenlock and Emmanuel, would have been persevered with under Sir Bob(he put Burley in as a 17 year old for his debut up against George best!!) and could see the future of the club in young players also I feel Burley would not have been shy to do the same!! all our great leader does is to farm out or ignore potential threats to his favourite and negative selection policy.

Non of our defenders get any protection from our premiership class no/8 who game after game plays team mates hospital passes resulting in them having to hoof it I thought his roll was to break up play and then play a pass that let's the team progress!!!

Mouth opens and rubbish emerges. Kenlock had no chance. Knudsen a favourite. End of. Giving youth a chance he said. Get out.
