Downes Wins Cap as England Win Opener
Wednesday, 21st Mar 2018 15:05

Town midfielder Flynn Downes played the full 90 minutes as the England U19s beat Hungary 4-1 in their opening European Championships elite qualifying mini-group game in Skopje this afternoon. The 19-year-old, who is on loan at Luton, was winning his fourth U19s cap.

Having gone behind six minutes before the break, Chelsea’s Mason Mount equalised for England on 48, Arsenal Nelson netted on 54 and 86 to give them a two-goal lead, then Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho added the fourth a minute later.

The England youngsters face Latvia in their second game on Saturday and the hosts next Tuesday.

Fellow Blues midfielder Tristan Nydam, 18, was also named in the squad but pulled out having suffered a knock in last week’s 3-0 defeat to Hull City.

If England win their group they will reach the finals in Finland in July where they will defend the title they won in Georgia last summer, a team which featured currently-injured Blues midfielder Andre Dozzell, who still qualifies for the U19s.

Who's the has been jerk? Bearing in mind Gleeson came on a permanent deal and to be fair has been pretty decent so far can actually spray a ball forward when needed.

Downes and Bru should be in the first team at the mo, they are better on the ball and try to get forward, and are better players than Gleeson, Hyam and Nydam who should be nowhere near our 1st team unless we are expecting to be in League 1 in the future.

Gleeson decent, having a laugh! He's very average whereas Downes is class and needed at PR not Luton. In fact Nydam would have been a better loan as he's younger and not ready for Championship.

I would rather have Downes in our first team than either Hyam or Gleeson.

Yay some good news, perfect place for him right now is Luton, a winning side playing for something in front of happy fans....be like having a new top player for us next season with our new boss in charge, bring on the good times at last!!!

Will he ever return? Personally I'm expecting ITFC to take the first offer from Luton. I seriously hope it won't happen but I am expecting it to. More transfer profit for MM to show to ME. That's the way our club operates these days.

Good prospect...should be here at the moment not Luton!

As a fan, feel responsible for this, but Downes is probably (personally) better off away from Mick and the Club. Unlike Burley, Mick will never commit to playing kids for a number of consecutive games when they must surely be allowed to make the odd mistake.

Come back next season Flynn when we all have the chance of a fresh start, but if MM is still here then won't judge you if you want to stay on at a newly promoted Luton.

This article sums up why you have to go dino !!
You persevere with Hyam , Gleeson, Spence & iawful, * Sears (who by the way you ruined his career) while having Downes, Emmanuel out on loan, using Nydam as a pawn in your power games, publically saying kenlock etc no matter how well you play you won't play in front of my arse lickers, no matter how well you play.

I don't usually comment on team selection policy's cause you never have the full picture as fans, but I just ain't getting how our youths are treated. What better way to give them experience, build them up for the riggers of the championship, than actually playing them for a sustained period or giving them decent opportunity's as subs. It worked frigging well at the start of the season. Mick's problem appears to be he's frightened to death of losing, I'd rather see a game of football where we go at the opposition (like I saw up at Leeds) than a boring, sterile, workmanlike, graft your nuts off and forget the meaning of the word entertainment. I can't wait to see the back of that tactically inept, youth stifling & negative flipping dinosaur.

Simply lovleh. Be seeing you, plenty in the tank, blinding 👌

Youth setup is the last hope. At least Evans isn't destroying it like he is our first team (how many out of contract), stadium (looks like Rushden and Diamonds) and fanbase. If Downe isn't in mf with Dozzell in pre season then we know he'll be another Rhodes.

tbf Evans stated the importance of the academy to our future and its starting to keep the rewards, picking up stars young for nothing and developing them into the first team. Goes without saying MM isn't the person to do this as he has no trust in the youth, proved by loaning out Downes and bringing in Gleeson.

BUT in the future, under a new regime, the future is actually quite bright with Nydam, Downes and Dozzell as a midfield three.

Cat i most definitely agree with you when you say MM is afraid of losing, but i also believe he is afraid of making changes and winning as well. He will always want to feel his way was best and there is no better way.

I do get quite excited when i think of next season, playing our own players under a new manager who wants to entertain, Bring it on!

When he comes back he should bring Nathan Jones with him!

Dissboyitfc- looks like we agree on the losing side of things, the scared to make changes (favourites) & the fact there are positives to look forward to, but I will never believe McCarthy don't want to win. He will set up not to lose and try and nick a win, that's his philosophy. I like your positive outlook for the future, and get it, however, im not buying into all this ‘merchant of doom' aka ‘drama queens' with there ‘the end of the world (ITFC) is nigh' which seems to be a recurring theme on here. Get things right on the pitch, entertain, buy some better turf, reconnect with the yocals and the rest will sort itself out.

According to a number of sources from Luton, Downes was quality for a couple of games and has gone off the boil completely recently. He's still developing and sending him out to a promotion chasing League 2 team was definitely the right thing to do. What would playing in front of a hostile, angry set of supporters do for a kids confidence?

Congratulations Flynn Downes! A star in the making.

You're all missing me the point here about which player Town should or shouldn't be playing in midfield.

McCarthy isn't interested in players that have creativity or flare or skill. They're not ( in his eyes), proper blokes. So players like Downes. Dozzell, Kenlock etc etc will always be bottom if the pecking order as long as MM is manager.

Well done Flynn, a great first season for you. Another year older and stronger, should be a 1st team starter for TOWN next season.
