On-loan Blues winger Danny Rowe was in the Lincoln City side which upset the odds to beat Shrewsbury Town 1-0 in the final of the Checkatrade Trophy at Wembley this afternoon.

The 26-year-old (third right, number 24) played the first 64 minutes for the Imps, who are sixth in League Two, as they defeated the Shrews, currently third in League One. Elliot Whitehouse scored the game's only goal in the 16th minute.

Former Macclesfield man Rowe joined Lincoln on loan in January and has now made 12 starts and three sub appearances for the Sincil Bank club, scoring two goals.

The final was a meeting of two managers linked with the Blues job which will become vacant when Mick McCarthy departs at the end of the season.

Shrewsbury’s Paul Hurst, perhaps the more likely candidate of the two given his greater experience at a higher level, is ranked ninth in the running by bookies Bet Victor at 16-1 at the time of writing, while Imps boss Danny Cowley remains the favourite at 2-1.

Cowley previously played down links with Town and his brother and assistant Nicky reiterated that position ahead of the final.

“We’re completely focused on everything we’re doing at the moment at Lincoln and it’s been a pretty hectic period so we haven’t had any opportunity at all to think about anything else other than trying to be successful at the football club we are working at,” he told talkSPORT.

Mark added 20:18 - Apr 8 From my limited knowledge of the two, I would prefer Hurst as I have read he has a more passing style that Cowley. Hurst was a success at Grimsby, getting them promoted to League Two. He has taken Shrewsbury from the bottom to 3rd in League One. A one-club man as a player, with over 400 appearances for Rotherham. 43 years old, so right age. Yet, Hurst is 22/1 with Skybet compared to Pardew at 3/1!

The Cowley's are certainly getting noticed and it could be that other clubs apart from us will have an interest in them.

wychyblue added 06:51 - Apr 9 Went to Wembley yesterday to watch the final ( relative plays for Shrewsbury). Not sure about these two managers ( or Rowe to be honest). Lincoln were very well organised and up for it but quite direct towards their target man Matt Rhead . But that is his strength I guess and the brothers would be daft to play it in behind the defence for him to run on to . Shrewsbury were certainly off their game today . I have seen a bit of them and usually they play like Lincoln do , not so much direct but high tempo , closing down and making it difficult for the opposition . Both managers would be an improvement of the current situation but for me Paul Cook would be the stand out candidate. Did well at Chesterfield , Portsmouth and now Wigan and by playing good attacking football.

warktheline added 08:20 - Apr 9 Nowt wrong with 'direct' football if it obtains desired requirements .....entertaining games at Portman Rd and a will to go beyond mediocracy ! There's a lot more to the Cowley boys, they've been 'succeed merchants' at every stop along the way! 'Hoofball' wouldn't have continually achieved success! These boys are relentless and determined and analyse opponents throughly! We'll regret it if we don't grab the pair NOW!!

wychyblue added 09:19 - Apr 9 Don't disagree at all warktheline. They played to their strengths. MM can't play hoofball when the strikers are all under 6 ft. Waggy and sears will never win anything in the air. The Cowley bros. did a great job against a side competing in the league above. Still Paul Cook for me but wouldn't be upset by the appointment of the Cowley's . Did speak to some Lincoln fans on the tube on the way in and they were unsure whether it was a little early in their career for the Ipswich job.

cat added 11:28 - Apr 9 Fat_boy_tim - you are talking international football, my post was aimed at McCarthys loathing of the domestic competitions. ‘Funnily enough' I spent a lot of time in Dublin when MM was boss (Ballsbridge) as a family member worked for Eirecom, sponsors of the the national side, so I can tell you first hand he achevived his success doing things ugly, sound familiar???

From the style of fooball played you could see the difference between leagues of these two clubs.As you say Lincoln were more hoof to that animal Rhead their No 9,and the way he elbowed Shrewsbury keeper was deliberate;and he definitely should have got a red. This was a McCarthy type win by Lincoln City in my opinion,nicking a goal and then defending for dear life with the occasional breakaway.A spoiling team who are only 6th in League 2.This is a good feat however by the Cowley brothers considering they have only recently been in the Football League. Nicky Cowley did an Arsne Wenger when asked about the Rhead elbow,saying he would have to see it again;but from his brothers reaction they thought it was a sending off. They certainly have something about them,and I understand research their opposition very thoroughly.They may have that magic formula to win things;but from this match I don't think watching Ipswich under them may not be much different football wise to recently unless they change;but seem nice enough blokes. Maurice Steijn would be my preference,and definitely not Pardew or McClaren;but its who Marcus decides on that counts,and it cant come soon enough.
