Pompey Boss Jackett Linked With Town
Tuesday, 24th Apr 2018 10:06

Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett is the latest manager reported to be a contender for the vacant Town job.

According to the Daily Mirror, Jackett is among those being considered to replace Mick McCarthy.

The 56-year-old took charge at then-newly-promoted Pompey in the summer of 2017 and has taken them to eighth in League One, four points off the play-offs.

Former Wales international Jackett, who has previously managed Watford, where he spent his entire playing career, Swansea, Millwall, Wolves and briefly Rotherham, signed a new contract in November tying him to the Fratton Park club until the summer of 2021.

Wigan manager Paul Cook, Jackett’s predecessor at Portsmouth, is now the bookies’ favourite for the Town job at 4-1 with Bet Victor ahead of Lincoln’s Danny Cowley and Steven Gerrard at 5-1.

Tony Mowbray is the fourth favourite at 10-1 with Shrewsbury’s Paul Hurst at 14-1 ahead of Alan Pardew and Shefki Kuqi, who are both 16-1.

Meanwhile, Taiwan manager Gary White, 43, has said he'd be keen on the job. The former British Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Shanghai Shenxin and Guam boss would appear a big outsider for the role.

If I was a currently employed manager considering the job I'd want to know what financial backing I'd be getting from ME. I favour Paul Cook as he's an astute tactician and has a good record of passing football and taking teams forward in their development. Having seen Wigan a couple of times this season it's arguable that their squad has several better players than ours. So if I was Paul Cook I'd want to know what backing I'd have to improve Ipswich, as we have a few players out of contract and several loanees that we've used significantly this season (Connolly, Celina, Iorfa, Carter-Vickers).

The more I think about it, Mowbray would be my first choice...possibly Sheffki second choice.

Failing that, a younger manager with some passion.

As above 'No Jacket Required'

Gary White is very intriguing. I would certainly think he was deserving of an interview at least. I initially thought no way until I then read the EADT link posted by Chatty. After reading that I honestly think the club should give him an interview as he sounds like he's got some interesting ideas that might give us a different edge. He sounds very positive in his approach and I like that. I'm not saying he's definitely the right man, but I do think he deserves an interview to enable himself to sell his vision to ME.

I think we'll go for it next season and the right manager will get rid of loans and bring in some better quality newbies. So . Need decent football playing manager, quality left sided wide player with pace, another centre back and right back and an energetic ball playing CM. Youth and injured returnees can do the rest. No to the like of Jackett and Warnurton for me - yes to Cook, Hurst or White!

Chatty, I agree. Gary White was also considered for the England Under 21s and was down to the last three but Aidy Boothroyd got it. I think Gary would be a breath of fresh air in our club and I'm sure he could take us forward.

WorcesterBlue: whilst I don't disagree with your post, you do realise that that won't happen don't you?

Mick spent -£8m in 6 years, where is the new manager going to get a decent ball playing midfielder, a high quality winger, a centre back better than we already have and a right back from?

Living in cloud cuckoo land if you think funds are going to be any more than the £1m Mick was given for Waghorn and Garner (which was a brilliant bit of business in my opinion).

Gary White sounds perfect.

Quote: " I like my teams to take some risks, show courage and play football in a way that is interesting to watch. I get so bored when people set up teams to just sit in, not concede and try to nick something"

The complete opposite of Dino! Just what we need. And his record is inspiring. Anyone who hasn't read it, read the interview in Chattys link.

Paul Cook with Stevie G assistant would be great - both Liverpudlians (though let's forgot our last scouse... Paul Jewell)

Those who are wondering whether Paul Cook (or Jackett) would be interested - I agree they might not be keen - regarding club size & same league... But Paul Cook did leave Pompey to go to Wigan despite winning league 2 with Pompey (which is a somewhat similar situation)

I'd love to see Stevie G but only as an assistant

would also be happy with Paul Hurst or Mowbray
(maybe with Steven Gerard as assistant)

Or maybe even Mowbray and Kuqi
Though their times at town didn't overlap

From everything I have read and looked into on all the names being bandied about, there are only 2 options for the new ITFC manager that fit the complete brief. They need to pull the whole community together behind the team, make the most out of the limited budget they will get, develop the players to their full potential - both youth and current first team, and most importantly play a more interesting brand of football on the pitch.
The 2 names with proven records of doing all of the above (albeit not in this country), and still have youth and enthusiasm on their side are Graham Potter and Gary White. Give one of these boys a chance before somebody else gets hold of them and leaves us further behind !

Tractor boy Blue is spot on, Wigan are a bigger club than Town nowadays. I saw them recently win 4-1 at Rochdale and with the likes of William Grigg, Nick Powell, Dan Burn and Max Power they will hit the Championship running. They have been in the Premier League more recently than us, they won the F A Cup more recently than us and their attendances are on the up. Luke Hyam wouldn't get in their squad as a handy reserve. Importantly they have an overseas ownership that is full of ambition and ready to spend, the exact opposite of us. If I was Paul Cook I wouldn't give Ipswich a second thought.

Must be supported whoever it is. Evans has to dig deep this time around.

Steijn, hurst, cook or gerrard with alonso as assistant. The latter would definitely sort our midfield out.

Damn just read the Gary White EADT article...

Have a very good feeling about him
And think he'd be a perfect fit
Wants to play attractive football,
Gets the best out of people yet happy to work with what he's got.

It would be a step up no doubt - and different pace & insurance test
But I'd be happy if we gave him a shot

The fact that he mentions Sir Alf & Bobby is something to be noted - can history repeat itself?

Read a bit about gary white. Looks a very promising young manager who likes young players and has had an interesting managerial career up to now. Outside punt I reckon. Alternatively and I've said a couple of times but I also like the sound of undsworth ( sorry bad spelling). Both young, encourages youngsters and are building what looks to be good coaching careers. Personally it'll one of these 2 for me.
With regards to Gerrard, there's something about his personality that I feel is not strong enough for senior management yet. Just my gut feeling.

I'm not expecting Pep Guardiola but I do expect someone better than this. What a boring uninspiring manager he is. I'd really like to see Paul Cook get the job but I just can't see any reason for him coming unless we can offer him a much higher wage than Wigan. He's a scouser so he's within an hour of home, he's going to be in the same league next season and more than likely a bigger transfer budget at Wigan so I struggle to see why he'd come to us. I'd still be very happy with Danny Cowley. I think he's being very unfairly judged and done a fantastic job everywhere he's been so far. Someone else will take a punt on him very soon if we don't.

Just trawled the net for articles with this guy (White) and got to say this is one guy that maybe all of us has never heard of (found quite a few going back to 2014 in the Guardian), but his CV as its stands is not bad at all , he certainly espouses the right approach that many ITFC fans seem to want , he is obviously very adaptable given his range of countries , so cannot see the issue of not being in the English game a massive issue , on the surface he appears to be just what we are seeking , and although we do not know about him it appears the football world (read FA) are and for the right reasons , maybe not a bad shout at all , certainly not a merry go round manager that many of us do not want , which he even alludes to himself. Maybe we should email the club and let them know about this guy , as lets face it i doubt they do know of him ..!!! as opposed to the normal "in" betting bunch. Talking to guys like this could not hurt at least.
