McGoldrick Leaving Town
Tuesday, 8th May 2018 12:53

TWTD understands striker David McGoldrick will join Luke Hyam in leaving Portman Road this summer.

The Republic of Ireland international is out of contract and no new deal has been offered to him by Town.

McGoldrick, 30, had been widely expected to move on despite being widely viewed as the Blues’ best player with injuries having limited his involvement for much of his time at Portman Road.

This season, which started promisingly and in which he scored eight goals, ended in February when he suffered a groin injury.

Having signed from Nottingham Forest in January 2013, initially on loan but with the deal becoming a permanent switch the following summer, McGoldrick scored 45 goals in 126 starts and 33 sub appearances for the Blues.

In August 2014 Town owner Marcus Evans turned down what was understood to be a £7 million offer from Premier League Leicester for McGoldrick, who subsequently signed a new deal with the Blues making him the club’s highest-paid player.

With his family having moved back to the East Midlands a couple of years ago, Nottingham-born McGoldrick is likely to be looking for a new club closer to home ahead of 2018/19.

Looks like we're cutting ties with players on bad injury records, and that makes sense. I would hate for Bishop to go as well, though! He needs another year to prove what he could do.

Good luck Didz he never reached the levels he should, but like Berra last season I think it was well known he was leaving. Don't think he'll be hard to replace even though he's the only flair player we've had for a while, his injuries have just meant we don't rely on him so once he's gone the wages can be better spent. It's a shame but I think this is best for both club and player.

deceivingly good player. Hope he stays fit longer wherever he goes..

Wonderful ability and vision but glaciers move faster and his injury record is atrocious. Letting him go is the best move and will free up some of the wage budget for the new manager.

I wish McGoldrick all the best. He scored and created some great goals and was a joy to watch on his day.

It doesn't take hindsight to know that we should have sold him. We would have had a decent amount of cash and he would have been playing in the Premier League and live near his family.
Good luck to him.

Whislt no shock, technically one of the very best to pull on a town shirt, unfortunately ruined by constant injuries. Never forget the season with Murphy.

Having said that, believe he is the highest paid player and thats ridiculous for someone who doesn't contribute anywhere near enough throughout 46 games.

Good business from Evans.

He's not proven value for money the last few seasons given his injury record. Also, when he comes back from an injury it seems to take him an age to get back to form. However, when he does hit that sort of form he's a joy to watch. At the start of this season he showed what he can produce when fit but again sadly the injuries came along again and we only got to enjoy his quality for a fraction of the season. I think his best spell was when he was on loan and soon after we signed him but due to the injuries he's rarely hit those heights again since so probably best for all concerned. Thanks for the memories though David, when you were fully fit and firing on all cylinders you were a joy to watch.

Unfortunately I'm going to say the same as hyam. Thanks for your efforts but it's probably for the best. May do him good

Martyn Waghorn involved in more goals than any other player in the league - I'm not sure if we need worry about McG any more. Just didn't have the pace, especially when he was occupying wider roles

With his injury record in mind,he is a luxury player that we can´t really afford. If he had more pace he would surely be in a PL-side? A great player on his day and I wish him all the best in the future.

Very good player. He was magic. That flying kick to his groin by a Sheffield Wednesday player this season should have been spotted, some referees in this league are very poor.
Seems he is fading now.

should have taken the 7m...... could have been invested in better options.

I do wonder where these players will end up next season ?

Not surprising...came back somewhat in to a bit of form at the start of the season, good on his day in the Championship and a bit annoyed the club has let him go on a free, should have been transfer listed either last summer or in the January window.

All the best David, scored some good goals.

When fit this guy can destroy any defence in the championship but he is never fit for long and has cost the club a lot in wages doing nothing, however I wish him well for some of his exciting performances that I have been pleased to witness, but I feel these are now in the past.

This is not a surprise. Wish him all the very best for the future. However, he has a horrendous injury record and has played only a half a season for the last few years.

We need to move on. So does he. Good decision.

Much that's been said reflects the talent and skills at McG' s disposal , but it was most certainly obvious from the start of this season in particular that he wasn't up to the job in totality ,and both his decision making and commitment lacked a great deal .
As to fitness you'll recall MM telling us we had to ' nurse him through' -- and the injury in the SW game was both appalling and totally incompetently dealt with by both the Referee and his Assistants ; sad to think they were even deemed worthy of officiating at this level ,at least on that showing .
I do ,however , wish Didz every best wish for his footballing future ,whatever and wherever he can settle .

I am sad to see him go as he has quality we need BUT Evans should have snapped Leicesters hand off for an injury prone player. Evans is a business man but doesnt know how to turn a profit on player transfers letting another £1million+ player leave for nothing. whoever signs him will increase their goal tally next season :(

When 100% fit he is unplayable but a move to an East Midlands club was inevitable - but which one - Forest? Derby? Notts County? Mansfield? Lincoln? Burton?
