Nydam and Downes at England U19s Training Camp
Sunday, 20th May 2018 14:57

Blues duo Tristan Nydam and Flynn Downes will spend this week at an England U19s training camp in Spain.

The 24-man party will be at La Manga from today until Friday as they prepare for the European Championships which take place in Finland in July, defending the title the Young Lions won last summer in Georgia when another Blues midfielder, Andre Dozzell, was a key man in the side.

Downes, 19, who has won five caps at U19 level, was in the squad when it was initially named last month, while Nydam, 18, who has played once for the U19s, was on standby but has now been added to the travelling party.

The draw for the finals will take place in Finland on Wednesday 30th May when the eight finalists - England, Finland, France, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Turkey, Ukraine - will be drawn into two groups of four.

Dozzell, 19 earlier this month, remains eligible for the U19s but is still on his way back from from the cruciate knee ligament injury he suffered on the opening day of the season.

England U19s: Brandon Austin (Tottenham Hotspur), Ellery Balcombe (Brentford), Jamie Cumming (Chelsea), Trevoh Chalobah (Chelsea), Marc Guehi (Chelsea), Reece James (Chelsea), Dujon Sterling (Chelsea), Japhet Tanganga (Tottenham Hotspur), Josh Tymon (Stoke City), Ben Wilmot (Stevenage), Flynn Downes (Ipswich Town), Elliot Embleton (Sunderland), Adam Lewis (Liverpool), Mason Mount (Vitesse Arnhem - loan from Chelsea), Tristan Nydam (Ipswich Town), Max Sanders (Brighton & Hove Albion), Marcus Tavernier (Middlesbrough), Keanan Bennetts (Borussia Monchengladbach), Luke Bolton (Manchester City), Ben Brereton (Nottingham Forest), Tyrese Campbell (Stoke City), Phil Foden (Manchester City), George Hirst (Sheffield Wednesday), Callum Hudson-Odoi (Chelsea).

trncbluearmy - fully agree we have lots of options for next season in midfield that we rarely had last season, just hope the new manager does not feel the need to off load any of these youngsters.

Well done lads, all 23 players should get some game time, hopefully flynn and tristan can establish themselves in the first 11 and go on to retain the cup, best of luck lads

We have some good emerging midfield players (Nydam, Downes, Dozzell, Bishop) who all need to get regular game time next season. Could even see McKendry get the occasional sub appearance. If we have a fully fit midfield next season (Big If) then we should need to make no new signings in that area.

Just my opinion but feel we need a FB who can play left or right and one (maybe two) new strikers. Chambers, Webster, Wooolfenden can all cover the CB position. Just upfront we can be a tad weak (especially when Waghorn or Garner gets injured). 20 goal a season striker would be a top investment.
