Accrington Defender Close to Joining Blues
Monday, 30th Jul 2018 11:41

Accrington Stanley manager John Coleman has revealed that the Blues are closing in on the signing of central defender Janoi Donacien. TWTD understands Town have agreed a deal with the League One club but with personal terms and the other formalities relating to the move still to be finalised.

The 24-year-old St Lucian, who also plays at right-back, missed training today and when quizzed by the Lancashire Telegraph Coleman said the 6ft tall defender is close to joining the Blues.

Donacien, who moved to the UK with has family in 2001, was an academy youngster with Luton, Tottenham and Aston Villa before spending time out on loan with Tranmere, Wycombe and Newport while a Villans player.

Having failed to break into the first team at Villa Park, Donacien moved to Accrington on a free transfer in the summer of 2016. Since then he has made 85 starts and seven sub appearances, scoring once. Last season he helped Stanley to the League Two title.

Town are desperately in need of additions at centre-half with skipper Luke Chambers currently the only out-and-out senior central defender on the books following Adam Webster's departure to Bristol City.

Donacien could be one of two central defensive signings the Blues make before Saturday's opening game against Blackburn with manager Paul Hurst implying that Curtis Tilt being rested by Blackpool on Saturday could be good news in his long-standing pursuit of the 26-year-old.

If Donacien completes his move to the Blues he will become the second St Lucian to represent Town following striker Earl Jean, who made one sub appearance in December 1996.

Yesterday, Town were again linked with another Accrington player, striker Kayden Jackson.

Good start to the week. Don't know anything about him but I'm sure we wouldn't be signing him if Hurst didn't rate him. Must have had a decent football upbringing at Spurs and Villa. Hopefully he could be a gem. I'd still like to see Curtis Tilt come in or Carter-Vickers back on loan as well. Think we need at least 3 more good signings this week

Wow, fantastic news.

Can't say I've heard of the lad, but I will obviously give him a chance. I trust PH judgement, his signings so far have been proven to be good ones!!!

COYB!!!

One more defender to come then hopefully, Tilt would be a great addition. Then a CM, and possibly two up front as Waghorn is probably on his way out. One thing is for sure, it's going to be an exciting season ahead.

Another lower league player. Not a journeyman or a premiership reject, but someone looking to ignite their career. Was with Villa, but like many has took a step back to step forward. I'm loving Paul Hurst's transfer policy.

Not a player I'm aware of but Hurst has made some good calls so far. It will be interesting to know if the Tilt deal is still on? I hope so as we need bodies in the centre-half position.

If we can bring in two central defenders and another striker the squad will look much healthier.

In Hurst we trust.

Has he been confused with Kayden Jackson in the recent rumour mill? Or is he in the offing too?

Earl Jean - Town legend!
I must have missed his fleeting Town appearance as a sub against Stoke!

@Crock - I recognise the name but with 1 sub appearance I can be forgiven for forgetting him I think. Like his nickname, The Flea though

You're right TractorBoyTommy, would much rather sign some 35 year old centre back who's just been released by Bolton, at least he will have championship experience.

With our funds the best we can do is sign good players from the lower leagues, keep up the good work Hurst!

Signing a load of lower league players (because ME won't fund us to buy anyone else) and expecting them to all play with championship quality... 🤔 some will make the step up but not all. Just hope they're good enough to keep us up...

Shouldn't change the dynamics of Curtis Tilt moving, PH knows we need 2 new CB's and the first one looks to have arrived.

Wow some really negative fans on here, you do know we signed Jon Walters from Chester City right ?

I think PH strategy is great and exactly what the club needs, players with a point to prove and youngsters given a chance.
