Hurst Confirms Enquiry for Wigan-Bound Windass
Thursday, 9th Aug 2018 15:31

Town boss Paul Hurst has confirmed that he made an enquiry to Rangers regarding forward Josh Windass, who is expected to join Wigan before this afternoon’s 5pm deadline in what’s reported to be a £2 million deal.

“I like the player, I definitely like the player,” he said. “We’ve enquired about him but I don’t think it’s something we could pursue.

“Someone had mentioned that he’s on his way here, someone just said it might have been his dad more likely that's on his way.

“He’s a good player and we are interested in any good players. I think he would have fitted us well, but it doesn’t look like that one is going to happen.”

Sounds like this was reliant on Garner going to make up the difference for a competitive bid. While I quite fancied the idea of Garner out and Windass in, let's not forget what Garner contributed last season - whether or not he fits in this team, we know for certain he can cut it in the Championship. Considering how many players we're relying on to settle in this division for the first time, I don't think there's any harm in that.

Would've preferred spending some of the £2m Jackson cash on getting this deal done along with Tilt tbh.

Hard to be upset with as much movement we've made in this window. It's great to see PH putting his mark on the team so soon and ME backing him up.

If he likes him and seemingly has the full backing of ME why not get him in? Outbid by Wigan doesn't look great.
I think its been the busiest transfer day i can remember and I like some of what has come in an awful lot, but we went in looking for a CB and we still look dangerously lacking in that department as have no idea what Niassa is like?
Definite excitement but really looking for an update saying we've signed a CB in the next 1hr 24mins.

I think this is a missed opportunity & if the issue was uncertainty about Joe Garner moving, the club should probably have gone ahead with it in the very likely knowledge that Garner would have been sought after as a loan option next week.
Hurst looked disappointed in the interview, recognising that Windass would be a good fit for what he is trying to do here.

Really disappointed and quite annoyed at this. He would've be b a brilliant signing for £2m. Can't understand why we didn't just get him in.

Shame that, imagine Hurst is feeling pretty gutted. If Windass gets plenty of goals (he may or may not) for Wigan we could all end up feeling sore about this one. We shall see. Hopefully it's not another case of the one that got away but it might prove to be another one that bites us on the bum.

Gutted we aint getting him but had a good window. Feel for him going from a team with a massive fan base to, well Wigan. Remember watching them on TV in premiership against the likes of Chelsea or Liverpool and the stadium having loads of empty seats. Can see us getting a few 20k+ games this season enjoy 10k rugby/man u fans.

BlueBlood90 probably because Wigan have bid 2.5 Million so they accepted that!

Some odd comments here. "Why didn't we just get it done"? Probably because we've not got the money. I strongly suspect Nolan, Nsiala and Jackson have accounted for much of the Waghorn cash and whatever was left over wasn't going to beat a £2m bid from Wigan unless Garner was sold.

windass would have been better bet than Jackson IMOA think return would have been higher regarding goals

Still feel we have the wrong people dilly dallying when doing our business. Windass is on par if not better than Waghorn, and we turned our noses up at spending £2m. Was thinking maybe we are showing ambition at beginning of week. Not so sure now

Maybe windass looked at the system and thought there was a possibility of him not being first choice with the players we have and the players brought in...if we keep garner I'm not that fussed we didn't get him...got to say the thought of Harrison and Jackson up front is exciting enough...cant wait for Saturday
