Garner Joins Wigan for £1.25m
Thursday, 9th Aug 2018 21:03

Town striker Joe Garner has joined Wigan Athletic from the Blues for a fee of £1.25 million with the deal going through moments before the 5pm deadline. TWTD was first to break the news that the Latics had joined Bolton in targeting the 30-year-old earlier this afternoon.

In addition to the fee, the deal also includes top-up clauses, while the frontman has signed a two-year contract at Wigan.

“It’s a great club to be at and I’m excited to be here after speaking to the manager about his ideas, so I’m looking forward to getting out there and helping the lads out,” Garner told iFollow Latics.

“I know how he likes his teams to play and have watched them for quite a few years. He plays attractive football and the result last weekend was a good result so hopefully we can have a few more of them.”

He added: “We had a good year at Ipswich last year and there’s a great group of lads down there. It seems to be very similar here and the boys are a tight group so I’m happy to be on board.

“Hopefully I can add a few more goals and contribute as much as I can. It’s a tough league and there’s some good teams in it. I think we can hold our own though and push on right up there.”

Garner joined Town from Rangers for a fee of £750,000 in June 2017 and the Blackburn-born frontman scored 10 goals in 29 starts and three sub appearances during 2017/18 before his season was curtailed by a small fracture to his skull.

During his spell out towards the end of the season, the former Preston, Nottingham Forest and Carlisle man underwent surgery for shoulder and knee problems.

Having scored the only goal in the behind-closed-doors friendly against Kilmarnock in Spain, a knee injury prevented Garner from taking any further part in pre-season and he wasn’t ready to be included in the 18 for Saturday’s Championship opener against his hometown club.

Garner was understood to be keen to return to his native North-West with his children based in that region.

Town boss Paul Hurst will now look for another striker with EFL clubs able to sign players on loan until the end of the month.

Meanwhile, Wigan have also confirmed the capture of Blues target Josh Windass, 24, from Rangers for £2 million, signing a three-year deal.

Makes you wonder if Wigan wanted to tie up the Windass deal before making a bid for Garner to stop us getting him.

I wonder who the loans are going to be!

1.25m is a decent fee, liked his effort, less so the amount of time spent on the deck, but always committed.
we need to use the money to bring in a decent cb and maybe another striker (though if we're only playing 1, we may not need more than harrison/jackson/morris/sears/ folami/lankester).
any chance of getting ccv now alderweireld has stayed at spurs?

Great additions yes. Yet I feel somewhat disappointed. Yet again Evans seems to be in profit, but we are seriously lacking in defence and up front!

CB: finished last season with three championship level defenders. Webster sold. Carter Vickers returns to Spurs. We sign one CB with no Championship experience.

Strikers: Didz, Waghorn and Garner out. All with experience. Two inexperienced strikers in. One man down. Nowhere near as much Experience. Risky

Evans must be several million in profit.

What about Nugent from Derby can't see him playing now, Derby have Waghorn, Wells & Marriot all added to their forwards. Loan this is👍🏻

"If that deal was so close, and up to us, then why not, knowing we could have those funds available, sign Windass, or Tilt?"

Ssshhhhhh don't criticise ME, have you forgotten he showed us his kids?!!
Happy with the signings this window that we have made but the failure to sign Tilt when obviously a top target of PH's or to bag Windass shows the lack of true ambition in my eyes... It could so easily have been a real signal of intent and we failed to give that...

1.25m for a striker with injury problems is good business: Shame it didn't happen earlier than maybe we might have replaced him: but I'm sure another forward will join along with a defender next week with Villa Derby & Sheff Wed after Rotherham Sat in the league: for all the moaners about signing too many lower league players this window so many were screaming for change after 2 seasons of Stagnation! Hurst has done that & still some moan #HeadsGone

Good business and probably best for all involved, a bit like the Waghorn situation with playingvwanting to leave us.
We now have ample time to pick up a couple of loanees which could maybe turn into purchases during the next window.

Seems like Wigan held back on the Garner deal knowing ME was unlikely to release the cash and they could nip in and sign Windass!!

Very Cute.

Yep Wigan played that very well. They knew ME wouldn't shell out with a sale first!

Good deal for us (and Garner). Now a loan-to-buy Tilt please :-)

This last bit of trading leaves me with a bad taste in by mouth. We finish the transfer window with 4 sales ....£10.75M...and 9 purchases 2 of which are loans ...costing £5.8m. So our owner will sleep soundly tonite with a cool £5m from Hursts transformation strategy...which incidentally I fully support. I also supported the move for Windass and Evans bidding £1.6m. He wouldn't move any further on this until the suitors for Garner coughed up...Bolton Millwall etc. What gets to me is that a club like Wigan secure Windass for only £400k extra and then make Evans an offer he can't turn down for Garner. Ugh!

Unfortunately we won't get Tilt now. We lost that chance penny pinching over 150k with millions in the banks...

PlanetBlue_2011 - Are you serious about Nugent? He hates us! he's never coming here and we don't want him either.

Crock added 22:02 - Aug 9
Not good. We have no proven goalscorers at this level now.

We have time to negotiate more with Blackpool for Tilt on loan to buy. If they don't want to sell him, then they won't of course. I was gutted when we let Didzy go, as he was my favourite player and linked up the play, but this really is a whole new era. Let's concentrate on getting Huws, Bishop fit, to supplement all these new arrivals.

Bart
Spence Nsiala Chambers Knudsen
Edwards Huws Nolan Bishop
Jackson Morrison

With Dozzell/ Nydan / Downes/ Chalobah rotating with that starting XI

Wigan's last day of transfers or ours ????????...it's very exciting but as posters who get down marks are just saying...everyone from lower leagues is a worry ...let's hope completely unfounded but we are allowed an opinion ......just great to get some of MM Dross out of our club

Wigan taking not 1 but 2 strikers off us. All I need now is to hear about that time Dave Whelan broke his leg. Funny old game.

Good luck to Joey Garner. I liked him. I will not like to see him at the DW though later this season.

Never a Garner fan with his style of play but he came in scored goals and did the job we needed him to do, all the best for the future Joe.
But all in all good business to see another profit on our players for a change.
Bitterly disappointed that no deal was done on Tilt and about not securing another striker.
However, I feel PH must have ideas of loans lined up with maybe a view to buy at the end.
He has and will continue to put his mark on this team and we must support him in this earl stage of the season. COYB's

So who will give credit to the old manager for on a shoestring leave a squad where 3 players raise in excess of £10m, brought for a fraction of that.
Hopefully Hurst has now reinvested to even greater value.
