Rowe Nets Hat-Trick and Morris Two as U23s Hit Eight Against Hull
Monday, 20th Aug 2018 22:14 by James Ager

Danny Rowe hit a hat-trick as Town's U23s thrashed Hull City 8-0 in their first home league fixture of the new season at Portman Road on Monday evening. Ben Morris (pictured) netted two and Idris El Mizouni, Ben Folami and Jack Lankester also scored in front of watching first-team boss Paul Hurst.

The Blues, who were without Teddy Bishop who was withdrawn late on due to illness, lined up in a 4-1-4-1 formation with Emyr Huws filling the holding role in front of the back four. Rowe and Lankester were on the left and right side of midfield respectively and Morris was up front.

The visitors had the first attempt on goal early on but Max Sheaf missed the target with a chipped effort from the edge of the box. At the other end captain Shane McLoughlin controlled a left-sided cross from Bailey Clements before hitting a shot which was deflected over.

However on 11 McLoughlin crossed the ball in from the right and although Morris's initial header was clawed away by keeper Callum Burton, the frontman reacted quickest and bundled the loose ball over the line from close range.

It was nearly two soon after when Rowe beat his man on the left and delivered a fine low ball across the face of goal, which Tigers' left-back Matty Jacob diverted just past the far post for a corner.

Midway through the half, Chris Smith - who is on loan at Aldershot but is still able to feature for the U23s - played a fine ball into the feet of Morris who took a touch and shot across Burton, but the ball came off the foot of the far post and was cleared behind.

From the resultant corner, Huws's back-post header was deflected wide by a defender on the line.

Burton did well to collect Lankester's low left-foot shot at the first attempt soon after but he was powerless to prevent Rowe doubling Town's lead on 33 with a tap-in from close range after an inviting cross from Huws.

Less than a minute later it was three when Lankester slid the ball through to El Mizouni, and the French midfielder found the net with ease.

Two minutes before the break, the visitors had a great opportunity to pull a goal back when the ball was worked out to Billy Chadwick on the right, but he pulled his effort wide of the far post.

At half-time, Folami replaced Huws in what looked to be a pre-planned change and the Australian took just four minutes to find the net with a low shot from the edge of the area.

Five minutes later Town added a fifth when McLoughlin played a fine ball over the visitors' defence which Morris ran on to and did well to keep his first-time effort down and to beat Burton again.

Just after the hour mark Josh Emmanuel played a low cross into the box from the right and although Morris's touch facing away from goal was heavy, Lankester ran onto the ball and finished superbly with a first-time shot into the bottom corner which gave Burton no chance.

On 64 some more impressive work from Lankester out wide resulted in him delivering a fine cross into the area which found its way to Rowe at the back post, who was left with an easy tap in.

Five minutes later Town keeper Harry Wright ensured his clean sheet remained intact with a great one-handed save down low to deny Keane Lewis-Potter, before Emmanuel forced his way into the box at the other end and again teed up Rowe for a tap-in to complete the scoring.

In fairness to the young visitors, Town fielded an unusually strong side at this level but they completely dominated from start to finish and the score could easily have been into double figures.

Huws will have benefitted from some more minutes, while standout performances from the likes of Rowe, Morris and Lankester will undoubtedly have caught the eye of Hurst.

U23s: Wright, Emmanuel, Clements, Huws (Folami 46), C Smith, Ndaba, Lankester, El Mizouni (Crowe 76), Morris, Rowe (McKendry 76), McLoughlin. Unused: Ware, Marshall.

What a lovely balmy evening at Portman Road, a thoroughly enjoyable night out and a masterclass in football. I don't take the sentiment that this was an overly strong side for the U23s, yes Huws was probably a class above anyone else on the field and Emmanuel has had a season in Division 1, but Rowe, Folami, Morris, Mcloughlan, can really only be described as having had cameo appearances at Championship level. Bishop withdrew sick before the match. So a fabulous performace from the lads. The changes in the last 10 minutes disjointed the performance in the end and could well have gone on to clock more than 10-0 otherwise. It's up to Hull to put out a competitive team at this level against what was mainly an U23 Ipswich team. The football was superb to watch and some really excellent performances. I would though single out Shane McCloughlin who had a really good 90 minutes changing position to accommodate substitutions. I have to say I have seen this lad several times and he has always lived in the shadows of the others and looked like he would drop out - I am not so sure now I think he could have a good career in front of him even if not at Ipswich.

El Mizouni looks promising but did fade in the second half.

Danny Rowe looked classy at this level and could find his way back into the first team squad soon.

Ben Morris looks like he is maturing nicely.

Ben Folami was only sub coming on second half, I can't put my finger on it with this lad - he looks a great prospect but needs a bit more strength for me to see him challenge for a Championship place.

budgieplucker Icould not agree more on your assessment of McLoughlin. He played very well, controlled the middle of the field, was very creative, and showed a bit of an edge toward the end when he was challenged by a few Hull players. Would love to see him break through to the 1st team, but it's a tough road with all the lads ahead of him.

Watch the Live stream too. Although, as the article states, it was an unusually strong U23 side, it was a fantastic performance. Lets also not forget that in the past we've put out strong teams in these games, and suffered defeat. So I'm still impressed with the scoreline and result.

Would be harsh to single out names from that performance, as literally every player impressed me at some point. This new regime has me very excited for the future. Im excited to be a town fan again!!

Saw the game at Portman Road. I assume PH was there, as we played with a rare intensity for an U23 game. Morris was utterly superb, different class and a massive prospect. Rowe impressive too.

Watched this on the live feed. As has been said , we have played strong u23 sides before and lost so let's take nothing away from this performance and I would think it's safe to say that if this continues Hurst will draft more of them onto the first team bench. Mcloughlin had one of his best games ever. Lancaster and Morris both very good players. Rowe will be back in the squad for Saturday I would think.

Well, Paul, you asked them to stand up an be noticed. I think they did! Hope this has given you some selection headaches for the near future. Even better than seeing lower league players coming in (and doing well) is our own young players stepping up to the level required.

No idea about the hull team, but they looked pretty physical to me,they were simply taken apart by a young Ipswich team and a three quarters fit top top player.
All signed up for the PH way,be patient there are some really good times coming

We are a changed Club. Clearly there is a message that unlike under MM, if you do well in U23 and training there is at least the chance of 1st team football. That leads to results like last night, solid performances across the pitch, and pressure on those playing tonight at Pride Park to not only get a result, but play well enough individually to keep their place.

As such, I can see another committed performance tonight, and with a little luck our first win.

Credit to Danny Rowe, clearly keen to impress & force his way into Hurst's plans.
Bishop withdrawn owing to illness - you wouldn't make it up, would you?

Chuffed to see Danny Rowe making a statement, I think he's been unfairly written off in some quarters. Has never really been given that much of a chance in the first team, I can remember one start against Forest when he didn't set the world alight (but neither did any of the team in that particular match!) and a couple of sub appearances, but I think he's worth giving another chance and last night won't of hurt his chances either.
So many excellent performances last night from various players (hard to single anybody out as it was a great team effort), was going to go but then decided to be lazy and watch the feed on Facebook, really wish I had of gone now that's for sure! Missed a couple of the goals too when I was busy making a cup of tea, but saw most of it and was particularly impressed by the passing and movement from the team. The lads can hold their heads high after that match. I'm sure Paul Hurst will have been impressed too.

Well done lads. I must say I liked the look of Morris when he came off the bench against Blackburn, had a nice first touch. Hope he gets a few more chances off the bench for the 1st team...

How do you watch live streaming of Ipswich Town games? I'm bed bound at the moment after having a stroke and would love to watch Ipswich on my iPad or mobile. Gav, maybe you know the answer to this question?
