Lambert: One or Two Loanees at Most Next Season
Monday, 8th Apr 2019 15:42

Town boss Paul Lambert is delighted with the attitude shown by the club’s current loan players but says there’ll only be one or two loanees at most at Portman Road next season.

Lambert was delighted to see striker Collin Quaner net twice on Saturday to win the game at Bolton 2-1 with the German, who is on loan from Huddersfield, now having hit three in his last two starts.

“He’s playing well,” Lambert said. “I’ve said before, when you get lads on loan in January time, we don’t know what they’ve done at their respective clubs, whether or not they’ve been involved with training, whether they’ve been playing U23s football.

“There’s a lot of de-conditioning there [for players in those situations], but Collin has got better and better and three goals in the last couple of games in a good return.”

He says all the Blues’ five loanees - Quaner, Trevoh Chalobah, James Bree, Callum Elder and Will Keane - have shown an exemplary attitude.

“That’s a unique thing that,” he reflected. “I think that’s something I’m really happy with, their characters have all been great and they’ve all come in and given it a right good go. At the end of the day they’re going to go back.

“The lads have come in and each and every one of them have applied themselves great, they’ve given us everything they’ve got and I’m fortunate that’s happened.”

Does he expect to have any loan signings next season? “I can never say never but you won’t have five, that’s for sure, and you won’t have six.

"OK, maybe one, maybe two at the most. As I’ve said before I don’t really want to go down that road.”

A striker on loan, given we've got Sears, Morris and Folami all injured until half way through the season would be defendable. Get us through to January.

I will be amazed if we only sign one or two loan players for 2019/20 given how we have relied on loanees for years, given our injury record, and given the budget will be smaller than ever. Even Lambert himself signed four loan players in January!

I can see a case for bringing in a loanee from time to time to cover for a position where we are, bring something we don't have or tide us over in an injury crisis.

However, I would prefer to see the emphasis on promoting our youth. The trouble with loanees is that we tend to end up with players that other clubs don't want (too young, returning from injury, etc)

Great news. Loans are okay to top up a squad, particularly when they are much better than your own players I.e. Fraser, Lawrence and Celina. But there is no point in having numerous loans - of average players who are often no better than our players I.e. Graham, Edun and Elder.

Let's hope the lack of loan players next season means more of the academy players making the first team on a regular basis.... reading between the lines that seems to be what PL is saying on a more regular basis !
