Lambert Targeting Both Promotion and Rebuilding For Long Term
Wednesday, 29th May 2019 12:47

Paul Lambert says the challenge for Town is not just to return to the Championship next season but also to put a long-term infrastructure in place, the Blues boss believing that standards have dropped at Portman Road.

"Our first target is to get back to the Championship,” Lambert told the club site. “It’s going to be tough. There are some big clubs in the division and when you look at the budget Sunderland have got. We will be nowhere near that.

“That’s the challenge for us but success for me also means about the long term, putting an infrastructure in place for the next six years, not six weeks or six months.

“We have to rebuild from top to bottom, on and off the pitch. The standards have dropped for a club of this stature and with the history behind it. It’s a big job, a huge job to turn things around. It’s a challenge we will take on though."

Big summer ahead, and a even bigger task ahead for Paul Lambert and his staff. Getting back into the championship, especially at the first time of asking will be no easy task, but I do genuinely have faith that PL is the man to fix the club.

It's gonna be a rollercoaster of a season, we all need to stick together. A huge year for our club. Good luck to PL and the lads...

Shrewd signings during this window and having them in before pre-season is key for us as last season half of the team didn't have a pre-season with us. I believe PL will rebuild this club but it may take time and lets face it, it will not be a quick fix! We finished on a high beating Leeds and the momentum of some back to back wins early next season will do for the confidence no harm at all.

Everything Lambert says is spot on. He's done well repairing the relationship with the fans. Now he needs to show real results. Recruitment and pre season have to be spot on. The players have to shed the losing mentality. Meanwhile the academy has to show better results. It's slowly getting there, but the club will not get back to former heights until it gets back to producing Dyers, Wickhams, Wrights and Scowcrofts. Oh, and get a Dutch player. We always seem to do better with a Dutch player.

Shows how badly our club has been run for the last 10 years!! Obviously none of the managers before Lambert knew how to get Evans to do as they wanted.

PL is like a breathe of fresh air. says all the right things, just what ITFC need at the moment.

Unfortunately for Paul, if success on the pitch does not come quickly, he won't have 6 years. There are too many fans that I speak to that think League 1 will be a pushover, and ill want him out if things don't go our way from the off.

Give him the time and the appropriate backing and I am convinced he can do it.

I've never wanted a manager to succeed as I have Lambert. Probably much too good for us, wanted to stay when he could have left, understands how things have gone wrong and what he must do to fix things, seems to want to be here for the long term and leave with a legacy. Also it will annoy the budgies if he does very well for us in the long term

When you look at all the players we have let go for next to nothing (or more often nothing!) that have gone on and performed wonders elsewhere then you can't help but wonder who sanctioned all these moves!? The blame must lie somewhere! If we'd of hung on to just half of them for an extra season or 2 we wouldn't need anything like a total rebuild. Rather we could of built the team around some of the quality players we released who have since made a mockery of our transfer policy! Talk about missed opportunities! We all know the players I mean, switch on Sky Sports any Saturday afternoon and you won't have to wait long to see one of their names pop up on the score sheet!

talks a good talk but I am still waiting for results on the pitch

Agree pre-season is going to be key .. far too often the clubs transfer business done far too late.

Comparing the squad vs West Ham and vs Norwich on 2nd Sept. Of the 17 that made it onto the pitch vs West Ham in last years final pre-season match only 6 were still making it onto the pitch once the transfer window had closed. Pre-season became irrelevant and most of the squad were having to gel once we were already struggling in the league. That was always going to mean we were going to struggle for the remainder of the season.

BUT to those thinking we are going to rip up League One next year ... we don't exactly have a great record vs League one teams .. or even lower .. over recent years.

Here's hoping though ... and hope PL will be given time to build HIS team rather than be judged on what he was able to do/not do with the squad he inherited in the dire position it was already in.

Also wish PL would give a little more detail with his fan pleasing comments.... All on here ... and beyond with any interest in ITFC have our opinions that "standards have dropped"... well thats obvious once upon a time we won the UEFA cup .. now we are in League one.... so .. what exactly does he mean by that? And how has he already addressed that? Whats the plan other than keep repeating that "we need a little bit of help?"

Good honest assessment Mr Lambert.... I'm not sure we have the players to bounce straight back up, but with the right acquisitions and sales in the summer we may have a chance. But it will be very very tough

TBB: I understand your comment but have a little faith, at some point it's going to come good & I think that time is pretty close.
Call me rose tinted glasses but I'm the eternal optimist!😜

I believe a decent couple of strikers is all we need. Norwood is 1/2 the key to us being promoted

Nothing much will happen until we recruit the right players who have the ability and skill to make a difference. If Marcus Evans wants us back in the Championship he has to realize he has to recruit good players.

We have looked like soft touches with non existent pass of the ball ability.. Wouldn't rely on any good signings until done and dusted. Standards dropped when Mascot charges were put in (Bobby Robson would be furious) and a lot before pathetic interview process when MM departed. Have lowered day on day. Can't get much lower so all of club must be prepared for hard work, including supporters. Still and will always love em!!

Pleased to hear that Lambert has the confidence to be honest about the club. It makes me smile when so many people think of Ipswich as a big club. Well we were and that's what Lambert and his staff want to see return and so do I. Anyone can support the likes of Arsenal, Spurs, Man City etc but to support a club like Ipswich requires commitment, faith, a community focus and ....hope !

I hope that I am wrong, but my fear is that our better players/prospects (e.g. Bart and Crowe) will leave to be replaced by “bargain buys”.

If recent press reports are accurate, securing the services of Norwood will be a BIG plus for me :) As for Lambert, my jury is still out to consider their verdict on whether he can instill enough confidence to be able to win enough games to challenge for Championship football at the first bite. It's nice to hear offers for our best young players be rejected too :)

I think we need to improve on our wide play, need a couple more players who can commit players for others to be in more space. Ward was inconsistent but he was one of few wide players we had, we also lack pace I feel to stretch defences.

Unfortunately, the recent history has been re-building a squad every summer, not just a team. No evolution, just max loaneee and short term free agents - particularly in January. I agree with everything he says, although I would have thought the Academy was in pretty good shape.Lets hope everyone else at the Club buys into what he is saying - not least a certain Marcus Evans

we lacked goal scorers as PH signings proved very poor, just look at the stats.
I don't think PL would have allowed all the players to leave before last season or even if he had then he'd signed better replacements. His problem now is who can he attract to L1?
Not sure there's much quality in lower leagues so maybe looking at Germany or go Dutch would work.

you are right atty, every season for umpteen years now we get the re building spiel. The building never gets finished though .Successive managers have alway been rebuilding .

I agree with most posts on here, give Lambert the time.

He respects the club, its history, he doesn't want to see it where it is.

And I think if we give him the love back then he'll be at home here.

I just hope that Town fans continue to be as brilliant as they have in backing him, and seeing a bigger picture. Even after a bad loss, a cup exit, or whatever.

Stick together, we're rebuilding from the bottom.

And, the more fans in the stadium, the better the finances will look. All in it together, can't insist we're a big club if we can't fill the stands.
