Robins Set High Price for Webster as Villa Bid Turned Down
Wednesday, 26th Jun 2019 16:44

Aston Villa are reported to have had a £12 million offer for ex-Town centre-half Adam Webster turned down by Bristol City, while it's claimed that the Robins have put a £30 million price tag on the 24-year-old with the Blues set to receive some of the profit the Championship side make on the defender.

According to Sky Sports, Villa have had a £12 million bid rebuffed, while the Bristol Post claim the West Country club are after as much as £30 million for the one-time England U19 international's services.

Webster joined the Robins from Town for an initial £3.5 million last summer with the fee potentially rising to £8 million and some of those top-ups are almost certain to have been paid over the course of the season.

The sell-on in that deal is understood to be the 10 per cent routinely included in most of Town’s sales, while Portsmouth would be due 20 per cent of anything the Blues receive as a result of their sell-on from the 2016 move which saw Webster join Town.

In addition to Villa, Newcastle United, Leicester City, Southampton, Burnley, Watford and Everton have also all been linked with Webster this summer.

Even in an inflated market it appears very unlikely that Bristol City would achieve anything approaching £30 million for Webster, who has never played in the Premier League, but even so the Blues’ share of a deal should one be concluded could well reach the £1 million mark.

Town have already received one sell-on windfall this summer with the deal which saw Matt Clarke move from Pompey to Brighton last week believed to have yielded the Blues £770,000.

30 Million! 'Avin a larf!
Would be a nice windfall for us if he sold for that much, but Bristol owner, Lansdown, must be smoking some serious stuff if he actually expects to get it.
Then again, being a billionaire owner, 30 million is probably considered small change to him.

It's about Bristol wanting to keep their better players . I wish Town would send the same message to Clubs when they come calling for our kids and knab em for sod all!

I would have thought Portsmouth would have already received their 20% of the profit when we sold him to Bristol City. I'd say £30m is laughable but it's all fantasy money nowadays!

The more we get to know of the deals relating to ‘former ‘ ITFC players ,the more we must wonder who was orchestrating the sales .and be convinced that there was little ambition to move our side forward ,either into the PL or to the very top of the Championship !
The management of Portman Rd as a business has been lamentably ill thought through and unambitious !
At last and at least in Lee O'N we've a wise and savvy person at the right level in the structure : let's hope PL and co continue their professionalism and we NOW see a consistent attitude and policy enabling retentions and ambitious introductions ( to be retained, not traded on !) .COYB

one year away from mick's coaching and his value increases 8-fold!

maybe if tabb had had a year more football before retiring, he'd be in the champions league rather than becoming a jockey!

Football has gone mad. If Webster is valued at 30m it's no wonder we're looking at free transfers! I'm sure there will be a parasitic agent behind it looking for his 10%. Wouldn't be a bad days work hey?!

We'd be making further profit from which they'd be due their 20 per cent. We had the same situation when Jordan Rhodes moved from Blackburn to Boro, although if I remember it wasn't very much.

This sell on agreement can in theory go on and on then, so Bristol City could have a sell on, which in 3 years time when say Webster goes to Real Madrid from Man U for 100million (i know it's far fetched) they get 10 percent, we get another 10 percent of their profit and Portsmouth get a further 20 per cent of our profit...

While I've been critical of Paul Hurst & his transfer antics, outs & ins, the sale of Webster was one I could understand from his point of view, even though it was disappointing from a fan's perspective.
Given his injuries/match time with us, not to mention the history of the squad as whole in the treatment room, it was fair to consider the potential value of Webster to the first team against the prospect of immediate income to strengthen his squad (including the presumed capture of Tilt at the time). Obviously things didn't go as planned & Webster, who apparently wanted to leave, had an excellent injury free season. For me, the litany of Hurst's errors came in response to his spending of the Webster money & allowing his experienced Championship forwards to leave without appropriate replacements.
The fee of £3.5m, which has surely risen to £4m - £5m by now, with the prospect for another £3m was not a ridiculous deal between Championship clubs, for a still somewhat unproven player at Championship level, allbeit with some very decent games under his belt & his potential very much recognised. And that's before his injury record is taken into account.
The bit that gets at me though, is this seemingly standard sell on rate of 10% for outgoing players. How come Portsmouth can get us to agree to 20% for Clarke? In this day & age, with massively over-egged fees being paid by Premier League clubs, even the Brightons & Aston Villas, surely we should be resolutely holding out for a 20% sell on clause, particularly for players we know have the potential to play at that level.

Just goes to show we have sold our better players far too quickly in recent years rather than build a squad around them. The attitude of sell as many players as possible and replace with short sighted loans is one of the many reasons we are now a League One club. Evans strategy has been completely wrong. If Webster does indeed move on and Evans fails to reinvest at least some of that unexpected income into the playing squad, then serious questions need to be asked of our owner.

@ Len - Hurst can be blamed for many things but the sale of Webster isn't one of them. He moved on days after Hurst arrived. The deal would have been discussed long before Hursts arrival.

£30m. They must be having a laugh - and I'm sure they are. Looks like he's going somewhere for something, though, which is good news for us.

Good ball playing centre halves are in demand, he ticks a lot of boxes and he's only going to improve therefore his price will only increase, look at Harry Maguire and where he is now..

As soon as a Prem Club are interested in a player from the Championship now you're talking huge money, although Brizzles valuation is a hands off message, £15-20m is probably about right, sell on clauses becoming hugely important now..

12 years of Marcus: look at the players that we let go (sometimes for good money, that was spent terribly) and where so many of them have got to... bet we could make an entire, high Champ/low Prem League standard, team from them. Starting with Rhodes, McGoldrick, Waghorn, Leadbitter, Webster, Cresswell, Mings, Wickham... the list probably goes on).
And here we are in League 1, and still there's nowt in the pot for players, and the promising youngsters are showing promise, but not enough else yet. We hope for more...

£30M 😂😂

Instead of hearing about ex players leaving other clubs when are we going to start our own re building?

Saxonblue74 added 19:41 - Jun 26
Edmundo, all a result of years in the wilderness that is the championship mid table. Books have to be balanced and if it's not coming from the promised land then assetts have to be sold. Harsh reallity.

To be honest I never rated him when he was with us, but that's because he was supposed to have been a classy "footballing" centre half.

I do not like people coming on here slagging off MM, but in this case I suspect Webster was never allowed to play his natural game. If he had been, we may well be the club who were holding out for a larger fee (last year or this)

Lathers added 19:59 - Jun 26
Irrespective of having to balance the books we have always been a soft touch when it comes to ‘giving' away our best players (apart from £6m for Bramble) We have never stood firm and actually held out for a stupid fee which clubs are willing to pay. We have let good or promising young players leave for next to nothing and then when sell on fees hit our bank account and we don't seem to reinvest. It's been going on for too long and ultimately will lead to us heading down to League One...

Agree with the comments about lousy transfer dealings since 2007. But even bigger is that the academy has simply not produced enough real talent that has blossomed in a Town shirt, while others were allowed to leave. Rhodes, Hourihane, Pope etc..
2

Edmundo added 20:14 - Jun 26
@WhoisJimmyJuan absolutely, and recently Ben Knight... yes we can see there is a pot of gold in the Prem, but we seem incapable of getting the talent into the first team before they bu&&er off, understandably disillusioned with the mediocre style of football we've played since Jim left.

alfromcol added 20:17 - Jun 26
He came to Town as a ball playing centre-half. MM soon put a stop to that and forbade him from crossing the halfway line.

Be great to have an owner like that. Old Marcus would have accepted straight away.
