Trialist Wilson Set to Sign
Thursday, 1st Aug 2019 11:35

Town are set to complete the signing of former Lincoln City central defender James Wilson following his trial.

Football Insider has reported that a deal is close and TWTD understands that discussions are well advanced with the player set to undergo a medical today and the move likely to be confirmed either later this afternoon or tomorrow.

Wilson is understood to have been offered a short-term deal until January.

A fortnight ago TWTD revealed that Wilson was training with the Blues squad with a view to winning a contract.

The 30-year-old subsequently made appearances in the friendlies against Colchester, Notts County and Cambridge.

Ex-Walsall central defender Jon Guthrie has also been on trial but Wilson’s impending signing seems certain to end the Blues’ interest in the 27-year-old.

Town have been in need of experienced cover at centre-half with Toto Nsiala out for around another three weeks with the hamstring injury he picked up at the Interwetten Cup, while skipper Luke Chambers is suspended from Saturday’s opening game at Burton having been sent off in the 3-2 victory over Leeds on the last day of 2018/19.

Newport-born Wilson, who will know Blues keeper-coach Jimmy Walker from his time at Lincoln, started his career with Bristol City before moving on loan to Brentford and then Cheltenham on loan.

A two-year spell with Oldham between 2014 and 2016 followed before he joined Sheffield United.

However, his two-season stint at Bramall Lane - including their 2016/17 League One promotion campaign - saw him make only a handful of appearances and Wilson, who also operates at right-back, joined Walsall on loan during 2017/18 before making a permanent switch to the Imps in January 2018.

Capped by Wales once at full level in addition to appearances for the U19s and U21s, Wilson’s contract at Lincoln was cancelled by mutual consent at the end of June as he had been unable to command a regular place in the side at Sincil Bank as the Imps carried off the League Two title.

Once the deal is confirmed, Wilson seems certain to make his Town debut alongside youngster Luke Woolfenden - who will be making his second league start for the Blues - at Burton on Saturday.

I see pre-season training has gone well for the posters on here opinions offered by some who are immediately jumped on by people with a different opinion. Which then sometimes become personal. Please all remember opinions are like arseholes everybody has one, it is theirs and they are entitled to it. Disagree with them but leave the insults of other supporters out.

We need to give the lad a chance. If he can play right aback then there's a big opportunity for him to make this position his own. I still feel that Ndaba will eventually be a strong partnership with Wolfenden. He's been very impressive for the u23's last season. Donacien still has along way to go in my opinion. He couldn't shine for the u23's and I feel Emmanuel has had chances to show what he can do but has failed to show any consistency which is a shame.

Just read this from Sunderland fanzine, seems they are more optimistic about our chances than some of our fans.

All these England Managers on here writing off a player before he has even kicked a competitive ball. Those same England Managers who know more than PL from their armchairs than PL has seen from three weeks on the training g field and two friendly games where we didn't concede a single goal.

Reality check, we are taking players from clubs that are in the same league as us now, eeerrrmmmm isn't that the reality of where we are???

I wonder how many of you will be season ticket holders and have seen at least 100 games of the Town over the years?? FFS you mongs, get behind the team and stop being so negative!!!

Has anyone thought that PL might be wanting to play five in defence in some games and James Wilson could prove to be a vital part of that five. Lots of players have come from leagues below or in the same division as Ipswich over the years and have proved to be astute signings. Everyone deserves a chance and it could even be a short term fix and if we are in the mix come January then another central defender could be recruited. Yes we all want more quality in our squad as do every club but lets give each and every player the chance to try their best and at the same time get off their backs with negative comments. It just could be that James Wilson reads all the comments on here and that could affect his confidence. Give the squad a chance to show their abilities and cheer them on in every game.

With Wilson do we just get the head, or is there a body as well ?

Dolphin I couldn't agree more.
Even Oxford are signing better players than we are.

For goodness sake can people please separate the genuine issue of Evans' underwhelming reign and financial behaviour this summer in particular from this poor chap's background. If he signs (and has he actually done so yet?) On a short term deal and is indeed not very good, then he gets released if he shines, it's a stroke of genius. But our club's problems are not the fault of James Wilson, so get off his back.

Bluearmy81 - I find your comments intriguing. It is fine for people to have an opinion, it is fine for people to criticise Evans. As I have said on numerous occasions I am not his bidders fan and believe the club have made many mistakes during his tenure.
However it is his money, without him I believe we'd be in a worse position (hard to believe) but who would want us look at Bolton and Portsmouth before us. I believe we have to support the team and either take action if this season goes wrong but action is not pointless moaning. Evans I know has the club for sale if a buyer can be found. I believe in constructive support for the team and the club. A dose of realism for what Evans does do even though we might all want more it's not my money and if I had it - I would NOT invest in a football club.

There you go again Bluearmy81. This is a post about a new signing , the subject was people giving him a chance before slagging him off or not and once AGAIN you make it about Evans . No one was defending Evans they were defending the player. You are obsessed with M.E.

Londonblue yes it is his money but no one made him buy ITFC. When he did he inherited and took on an obligation to fans, a duty if you will. Fans he has failed chronically and miserably. And yet he continues with the same broken approach. I always support the team, sing as loud as anyone when I go but supporting the club in its current guise, with blind loyalty to Evans is not good support in my humble opinion.

A lot of good (and bad) points made here. Dont have a problem with the signing, we needed someone. Good luck to him I am certainly prepared to the team my support and patience. We are not a particularly enticing proposition and our current financial situation undermines our ability to attract players even more so.

My issue is that we were conceding 2+ goals a game and were easily relegated. Yet, in just over two months, nothing has been done to resolve the central defensive situation. A last ditch free on trial. How is that strategy and management, regardless of who is responsible for recruitment?!

People seem to think that by dropping a level, those same defenders(some of whom had dreadful seasons and careers are on the landslide) will suddenly find their level and keep the goals out.

So we are left with hoping that Woolfy(young and inexperienced) and Wilson(lower league, been injured) suddenly form a defensive partnership and start our season off with a clean sheet. I know very little about either player and wish them both the very best of luck.

Oh wait.....its ok, coz if this doesnt work out we always have Chambers to come back from suspension, he should find his level now!! (Jeez.........)

DJ. Great link....really insightful.
They have Harrison as a free transfer, I know Pompey feel they got him for nothing.
But it really was 450k.
Obviously loads of research done on us in the link.

I really hope this guy does well but it smacks of desperation! I really feel for Lambert he gets judged on results and will be booed if he doesn't get them but has received no help from Evans! 3 signings Lambert said and everyone could tell the frustration in his interview at nothing getting done. Richest owner in league one and we can't afford a packet of peanuts absolute joke I don't know how anyone can support the owner tbh 🤷‍♂️

DJ. Instead of picking numbers out the sky, just look at oddschecker, it looks across the markets.
1/3....I can't see these odds.
Evens is the closest to your made up numbers on the markets.
That's for an outside top 6 finish.

73 - Picking numbers out of the sky!! Hahahaha That is rich coming from you. Here is the link from Sky Bet to show we are currently 4/11 to not be promoted.

You clearly didn't look very hard. Now I've backed up my statements, you are still yet to.
I'll say it again, you did not place a bet on Ipswich to not be promoted at 20/1. Have a good day Buddy.

DJ. As per your last link. Inaccurate content.
So not worth going there.
My bet was placed 06 May.
Sunderland and pompey were to be involved in the play offs.
We was stand alone favourites for L1 title.
Sending me Links with current odds shows or proves nothing.
Anyway for someone who said they wouldn't argue or engage with me anymore, 6 posts ago.
Your still at it...
