Ferguson: We Might Be Top Had Town and Wycombe Not Played Bolton's Youth Team
Wednesday, 30th Oct 2019 09:38

Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson says his side might have been top of League One had Town and Wycombe not “played against Bolton’s youth team”.

Posh are currently third, two points behind the Chairboys in second and the Blues who lead the table on goal difference having played one game fewer than both the teams behind them.

Bolton were forced to play sides largely made up of U23 and U18 players in the opening weeks of the season while their takeover was completed. During that period Town won 5-0 at the University of Bolton Stadium, Wycombe having beaten them 2-0 at Adams Park on the opening day.

The Trotters’ new owners having been installed, they signed nine senior players on deadline day with their form gradually improving since then. They won their first game of the campaign 2-0 at Bristol Rovers last week. Posh play Keith Hill's side for the first time at London Road in December.

“Twenty-eight points from 15 matches is a decent return and let’s not forget if Ipswich and Wycombe hadn’t both played against Bolton’s youth team we might well have been top of the table,” Ferguson told the Peterborough Telegraph.

“But you tend to be where you deserve to be after 15 games and I’m very happy with our position. I’m delighted with how the players have performed so far.”

Overall, Ferguson, whose team would have beaten the Blues at London Road but for a last-gasp Luke Chambers header making the score 2-2 in August, has been pleased with his side’s form.

“The good far outweighs the bad so far,” he reflected. “When we’ve taken the lead in games this season we’ve picked up 26 of 30 points which is a very good stat.

“One League One defeat in the last 13 matches is excellent form as is five wins and a draw from our last six home matches.

“We’ve only picked up points from losing positions against Ipswich and Coventry, but the fact we came from behind twice against Coventry last Saturday and the second time was so late in the game was very encouraging.

“There are definitely areas we can improve. We’ve let two or more goals in on seven occasions which has to stop, but overall it’s been a pleasing start to the season.”

Town and Peterborough meet again when Posh make their trip to Portman Road on Saturday 1st February.

Always looks like he's chewing something in photos. Now we know it's a sour grape. On the other hand, its not really a very inflammatory comment or worthy of us getting our knickers particularly twisted. Carry on.

"...whose team would have beaten the Blues at London Road but for a last-gasp Luke Chambers header making the score 2-2 in August" - true, but we did also have a penalty saved.

And here's another thing we could be further ahead if not for the postponed games. I really believe that, but that's the way it is! Live with it!!!

He hasn't mentioned that if his side managed to hold on to the win against us and get better results against Fleetwood and Oxford at the start that they would be above us. A lack of responsibility for your own poor results early on it seems is being masked here. You may finish above us, you may not, who knows? For now, jog on and concentrate on what you can influence

Is this another manager trying to wind up more successful managers than himself? Remember what happened to Evans and Barton when they tried similar.....they both got some teethmarks in their backsides and also had to consume large portions of humble pie.
I am sure Dad Ferguson didn't need to resort to such ridiculous comments during his wonderfully successful career!

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

I can't help but think there has been a slight overreaction on this no news day.

He was only talking about his team to the Peterborough Telegraph.

He hasn't said anything detrimental about ourselves or Wycombe.

Darren Ferguson is not a very nice person and his comments reflect this. They are not respectful to us or Bolton. Town did not put the fixture list together and we have played the matches accordingly and beaten Bolton. If Peterborough had played Bolton at the same time would they have sat back and not tried to win or score? Of course they wouldn't. Mr Ferguson should concentrate on what his team is doing and leave the rest of us alone.

To be fair he's a better manager than Lambert in my book. But where any of us now is irrelevant. The table will tell the truth of the story in May.
