O'Neill: Lambert's Job is Safe
Tuesday, 1st Dec 2020 10:54

Town general manager of football operations Lee O’Neill says owner Marcus Evans has no plans to make a managerial change despite being aware of fans’ frustrations regarding performances and results under boss Paul Lambert.

The Blues have lost seven of their last 10 in all competitions and five of their last eight in League One, dropping to sixth in the table ahead of tonight's game at Oxford United as a result.

Speaking to BBC Radio Suffolk as part of a longer interview being broadcast at 6pm this evening, O’Neill said owner Evans is well aware of supporters' concerns.

“He understands their frustration, obviously I communicate with him,” he said.

“He can hear and see things and see what’s around him and even though the supporters aren’t at the stadium there are ways that they have voiced their opinions.

“He’s aware of that and fully supportive in trying to help the football club get back to the better times.”

My god. Havent people ever seen managers get a vote of confidence before? More often than not, that leads to the manager being sacked within weeks. So why attack oneill for making a statement that is made by many CEOs or chairmen.

Blueandtruesince82. Shame u don't live up to ur name. Yes, nobody go to games, or spend money on merchandise, etc. Yes, that really makes sense. NOT. The only change that would happen then, is the club would go out of business. Of course, something needs to happen. But that is just so counterproductive, it's ridiculous to even suggest it.

Translates as we've heard you moaning, but we're going to do nothing about it.

His awful interviews and dreadful demeanour post match show that even he knows he's lost it . Why not play with 2 strikers against make shift centre halves v Charlton when short of midfielders anyway for e g ? Just dont see how he can inspire or motivate the troops . He's got to go , cant take another 4 years of P L misery.

Evans thought 10 years ago that he would walk into the club, spend a few quid and be our saviour !.... however he had no idea what he was doing and never did the people he employed.
Now he's either uninterested or too scared to spend money on quality players and staff to get us promoted - who could do anything with what we have ? Our experienced players never lead from the front, our free transfer players were free because they are injury prone, too old or just not very good..... I'm not sure that our young players are as good as we think they are ??

I'm actually embarrassed to tell people I'm a town fan at times !

I will always support my club no matter what league they are in , but in return I want players and management to show 100%,commitment, not asking much is it ? Currently I feel let down by the club showing no interest in the Cups, poor tactics and set up of the team and players just going through the motions. The club is and has been on a downward spiral for the last 10-15 years and the Owner just about keeping the club afloat but showing no ambition.

Evans' puppet tells us what we should already have known. Evans won't act for a multitude of reasons (money, reputation, history etc.) and I assume Lambert will continue until either we fail to reach the play-offs at the end of the season or if we really go on a dreadful run. The real problem at this club is not Lambert, but Marcus Evans. Until he goes we are going nowhere as a club.

The Guardian website has just loaded a thoughtful and seemingly well-researched article by Nick Ames: ‘Paul Lambert battles for Ipswich future at a ghost club in rapid decline'. Among many other things it includes reference to the intemperate banning of Phil Ham. For some reason the description ‘ghost club in rapid decline' has struck me as chilling but apposite. I admit that I was unhappy with Mick McCarthy (and his attitude) in the latter part of his tenure. His football may have been excruciating to watch, but his teams were well organised, he could be flexible during matches, and there's no denying his achievement of reasonable results. Compare the chaos and incoherence now. The chairman needs to make a decision soon - if this season is as crucial as we all believe. He might feel that our not being at matches keeps the pressure off. But, even if second best, very many fans are watching our season unfold on ifollow, and it has made for ugly viewing.

As some have already said previously, the five year contract might have some fine print that makes it cheaper to sack him if our league position is below a certain threshold.

Love logging on every day to read the comments from some supporters on here.
People need to take a large dose of realism.
We are currently a League One club. Nobody wants to be in this division, we want to be Championship at least.
We were a relatively safe Championship club under MM but the fans hounded him out and got what they wanted in a young manager in Hurst. That didnt work out and we paid the ultimate price in relegation.
Now we are in League One and the majority of fans think we have a god given right to be top of the table, knocking six goals past teams without reply each week and winning every game we play.
Time to wake up and smell the roses - League One is not a walk in the park. Look at other clubs like Portsmouth, Hull, Sunderland, Charlton, Wigan, Blackpool and even Bolton. All former Premier League and Championship clubs now in L1 and L2. Some of those are lucky to still be in business and not disappear like Bury and Macclesfield.
I feel that, in these current times, we are lucky to have an owner who can keep the club afloat and absorb the losses - he has thrown millions, in one way or another, at the club since he took over, in an effort to get us back up to the PL but to no avail.
That can only last so long until such time as you have to step back and use the resources you have, which is now the situation we are in. We arent going to go out and spend 1m on a player - we need to sell to survive, we always have and we always will.
Time to stop whinging and whining and back the club we all love by being positive. At the end of the day we are currently in the top six when we arent even playing that well, have a decent young team who are mostly ours rather than loans and a team that is trying to play passing football to the best of their ability.
Im sure there will be lots of you that dont agree with anything ive written here but thats what football and this forum is all about - opinions!!

This is a meaningless statement, of course the club will publicly back the manager until such time as they get rid of him.

What are people expecting LON to say, we're all aware you're hacked off with Lambert and I want to reassure you he's on thin ice and we'll sack him next week if we lose another game? Clearly he's not going to say that even if it's true as it would be totally unprofessional for him to do so and would undermine the manager.

Also, anybody saying "we are where we are" and suggesting we should just accept the current malaise and get on with it needs their head tested. I will never accept this kind of mediocrity and no true fan should. If you care about ITFC then you should be utterly fed up with this situation and determined to make your voice heard.

Enough is enough.

Imagine doing a job where all you have to say is, "what shall I tell them mr evans" Evan's says, "tell them we have it all under control and we understand their frustrations" (then both heads go back in the sand) a vast majority of fans have had a gut full, me included. Was trying to explain to my mate the other day how bad the last ten years have been as a town fan. False Dawn's, injuries galore, stagnation, relegation, poor managers (some worse than others) even just looking at that lot up the A140..... look at them compared to us over the last ten years. Now dont get me wrong, I love town and support through thick and thin, but its grim reading.

No wins against norwich in over 10 years and 12 games.

They were promoted from league one as champions and thrashed us 5-1 on way to the premier league.

Beating us in the 2015 play offs, again on way to premier league.

Winning the championship, again promotion to the premier league, while we finished rock bottom of the championship.

That alone is enough, without all the other crap we have had to put up with! I want lambert gone, but look how many managers we have haid, and quite frankly have failed miserably. Marcus Evan's, if you cant run a football club sell to someone who can and wants to.

If we don't go up this year it its curtains change the manager now and give us hope. Evans and his latest mouthpiece don't have our lifetime emotional investment they just don't get it.

Lose at Oxford and Plymouth and Lambert will crash through the thin ice he is currently walking on - no matter what o'Neil has said above.
I cant see us scoring and I cant see us not conceding.

blue86 Norwich are in a decent place as a yoyo club between the Championship and the Premier League, but obviously they have had their failures as you can't just keep getting promoted without have the failures. Unfortunately for us, we got relegated from the Premier League at the very worst time and were forced into a fire sale for our best players, whereas Norwich had a similar experience and got huge parachute payments and were able to sell their best players at very good prices. Don't forget we have their manager who got them promoted out of League One. This isn't a problem that starts and ends with Lambert. Personally, I would stick with Lambert unless we have a firm commitment from someone like Danny Cowley. Quite rightly people were fed up with MM, but it was due to his personality more than anything. Fans will accept poor results for an extended period of time from managers like Eddie Howe or Sean Dyche because they don't try and spin things and their methods are likely to get results if they are consistently followed.

Debenhams is in the news today and as a business it reminds me of Town. A failing business "rescued" by those who purport to have its best interests at heart and yet over a period of years thereafter, it continues to spiral ever downwards until it finally collapses in a pool of debt and mediocrity.

Although not happy with the way things are going i do have a bit of sympathy with Paul Lambert, he inherited a squad where the quality had been sold and replaced with league 1 / 2 players of questionable ability so is having to rely on some promising youngsters. The players he's bought in look to be an improvement but alas injuries have taken their toll on them. I think many players have to be moved on at the end of the season as are not up to the standard required to get us out of this league but can only go when contracts are up. The salary cap has now stopped us having any advantage over the smaller clubs in attracting better players which does not help the situation. With an owner reluctant and now limited in investment any manager is working with his hands tied behind his back so the future in my mind is progressing the youngsters through and hoping they come good and replacing others as and when contracts allow, hoping to attract a bit better quality to the club. The question then, is Paul Lambert the man to do this ? i have my doubts but whoever is in charge it will take time to get a better squad together !!!

It appears the club is listening to our cries of “Lambert Out” but I also find it strange they should issue a statement so quick.I just maybe wrong but I have a strong feeling the owner has his feelers out for a new manager but I won't hold my breath.🤞

Let's hear it from the man Evans himself, with reasons for keeping the pr@t on. I don't want to hear from his puppet. Clueless owner, clueless manager, weak as water players. The club is rotten from top to bottom Evans you have ruined this once proud football club.

Europablue, yes alot of what you said I do agree with. But the last ten years for us as a club have been pretty bad. And like you say, the bigger picture is that it isnt all Lambert's fault, but personally think Lambert should go. His job is to atleast get the best out of our squad, which I'm afraid he is not. I hope I'm wrong and Lambert turns it around but wont hold my breath thats for sure.
