Former Striker Rhodes Linked
Wednesday, 28th Apr 2021 13:14

Town are reportedly keen on former striker Jordan Rhodes, who is out of contract at Sheffield Wednesday this summer, with another of his previous clubs Huddersfield also linked.

According to Football League World, the Terriers lead the chase for the the 31-year-old but with the Blues set to offer Rhodes the chance to return to Portman Road.

Rhodes has scored seven times for the relegation-haunted Owls this season having had a frustrating time at Hillsborough having joined them from Middlesbrough for £10 million in the summer of 2017 following a loan spell. Due to a lack of opportunities with Wednesday he spent 2018/19 on loan at Norwich City.

Former Kesgrave High School pupil Rhodes, who joined the Blues as a 15-year-old from Barnsley for £5,000 after his father Andy became keeper-coach at Portman Road, was controversially sold by Roy Keane in the summer of 2009 having made only 10 sub appearances, scoring one goal.

After top-ups and 10 per cent of the sell-on when Rhodes moved from Huddersfield, with whom he had enjoyed a hugely successful spell, to Blackburn for £8 million in August 2012, the fee Town eventually received moved close to £1.5 million.

Town boss Paul Cook plans a major revamp of the Blues in the summer and with the new owners’ cash behind him is expected to look at players who have shown they are capable of playing in the Championship as he rebuilds the squad.

Whether the likes of Rhodes - if there is anything in the claims of interest - or other players in that mould will be willing to step down to League One remains to be seen.

Could still do a job at lower level

Don't think anyone could really deny that this would be a very good signing. unfortunately I think we need to accept that this would be pretty unlikely as he probably won't be too keen to drop into league 1, and if he does he may as well just stay at Sheff Wednesday

Im not convinced players will baulk at coming to ITFC in the knowledge we have funds to invest and League 1 should de a one year sacrifice, but we will see. If we pay wages comparable with Champ clubs and he is more or less guaranteed to play, why would he not, its football hes been lacking

He is not what PC is looking for in his one up top formation. Yes he's a goalscorer, which we are crying out for, but so much more is required of the centre forward in Cook's preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, which he will be playing next season.
Jordan has never managed to stay in one place for too long. Despite scoring goals wherever he went, managers were always prepared to let him go, even when they had paid big money for him & weren't being offered more to sell. His overall game & contribution to the team is not what it should be, which is why he never regarded as a Premier League forward.

surely we are building for the future so we should be looking to bring in players who will improve as the club improves and hopefully moves up the leagues like Ivan Toney has done not players coming to the end of their career where their best years are behind them like Rhodes. If this means buying from the European leagues, then so be it.

A proven goal scorer, but don't think he is best being up front on his own. We need another Norwood, but preferably one that stays fit

Any striker we sign with the view of playing 4-2-3-1, is going to need 2 very good wide men and a creative midfielder to supply them, which unfortunately we haven't had for a while.

Clearly Rhodes has ability, but definitely lacks that vital acceleration over the first five yards.
He might, despite that, do a very useful job next season - if he is prepared to move down to League 1.

Grigg has done very well at MK Dons. Wouldn't surprise me if we went for him.

Not for me bit of a journeyman and at 31 looking for a cushy little club to get his feet up. We should be looking at players that are hungry and can play for ninety minutes. Peterborough have proved there are players at this level with ability who can get us out of this league. We must stop thinking we are some exclusive team in league one and start targeting the right sort of players to get us out of this league.

Obviously PC's one up top means that the three supporting players also need to have goals in them. The one up top needs to be a big physical presence. But I think at least one of the three behind also needs to have similar centre-forward attributes to help cause trouble at corners, and indeed defend corners, etc. For that reason, I just prefer the idea of two up front. But it seems that with PC, this ain't going to happen.

Some shocking comments on here regarding a player who was sold way too soon by Town - he didn't put in a transfer request. Yes, it's true he never set the Premier League alight, but his goalscoring ratio is better than anything we've seen since Marcus Stewart. He would have been a good player for us once, sadly not the right age nor the right player for us now though.

He's been around the block & back again!! If we can pay his wages I'm sure he will be more than happy to come back here. We will see🤔 see comments of Grigg that's who I think Cook will get in first as he done so well for him at Wigan. They can both score goals!! Maybe just maybe sign both🤞

200K a week will be the only way of enticing anybody to Portman Rd nowadays. 5/4 that we'll be starting with Sears and Jackson next season when we open up at Cheltenham !

seriously ! J R peaked ages ago . WE screwed up selling ,and getting him back now would be another mistake imo. We should be looking at better now if we are to get anywhere ,

Hitting the heights with the new owners I see, quite honestly I can't see the spend you are all anticipating, we are third tier club struggling to get anywhere, who will want to come here unless the money is right and are they the kind of players we want? I see Phoenix Rising have had a poor pre-season having changed their entire first team, sounds like Paul Hurst all over again, I guess time will tell.........

Never go back. However enticing it may be.

You can get whatever striker you like... however if you have no creativity in the team then you will never score goals.
Midfield is top priority IMO
Still not convinced that you need 2 defensive minded CMs playing in a 4-2-3-1 formation. This is only League 1. If we were playing a cup game against Championship or Premier League teams then yes, you need to be careful when getting players forward. Surely 4 defenders and GK suffice in L1 ???
Should expect midfielders to defend AND attack !!!
