Chirewa Nets Twice as U23s Thrash Southend in Friendly
Wednesday, 15th Sep 2021 09:50

Tawanda Chirewa continued his excellent goalscoring start to the season by netting twice for the U23s as they beat Southend 5-1 in a behind-closed-doors friendly yesterday.

The 17-year-old has scored in all three of the U23s’ Professional Development League Two South fixtures this season having been similarly prolific in pre-season.

The side coached by Kieron Dyer and Bryan Klug, currently third in the table, is next in action in the PDL2 South on Monday 27th September when they host leaders Bristol City at Playford Road.

George Burley would give this lad a well-deserved chance.

So instead of getting a chance in a meaningful game he's playing an u23 friendly?

Makes you wonder if we shouldn't have gone down the yoofs route more. They don't stand much of a chance of getting a look-in at the moment.

Players won't be given a chance on the strength of their u23 performances do to the very poor standard of football. They will need to go out on loan when they are ready. Unfortunately most of our youngsters tend to end up at non league clubs to further their development. Watched Callum Page last night who's back on loan at his former club Needham Market because the standard of football is much better than u23s.

Woolfenden is the only homegrown player in the list of 22 submitted to the EFL. Given how much the club has laid out on Cooks new squad it's going to need a horrific injury list or a new manager to see the any of the youngsters get a proper chance. We have 28 first team players if you include Kenlock before we get to the kids. That's not including the likes of Crowe, McGavin etc who have made debuts before Cook turned up.

Let's not get too carried away here. Southend are in the National League and their youth set-up is a far cry from 10 years ago. Ipswich U 23's is comparable to step 4 non-league football (Felixtowe / Stowmarket).
