Morsy Led to Believe Jackson Will Sign New Deal
Tuesday, 29th Mar 2022 09:53

Skipper Sam Morsy says he’s led to believe that striker Kayden Jackson will sign a new deal with Town.

Jackson is out of contract at the end of the season and manager Kieran McKenna recently intimated that new terms would be offered to the frontman, who joined the Blues from Accrington Stanley for £1.6 million in the summer of 2018.

The 28-year-old was out of favour under both Paul Lambert and Paul Cook but his Town career has undergone a renaissance since McKenna took over and he scored three times in six matches prior to suffering a hamstring injury which looks set to end his season.

Morsy, 30, was asked how the dressing room has been this season with a number of players who would feel they’re first team players either out of the XI or matchday 18 at any one time.

The Egypt international, one of the 19 players brought into the club last summer, cited Jackson as an example of how members of the squad have dealt with the situation.

“It’s been really good, to be honest, it’s been surprisingly good actually because there are all sorts of problems which can come from having a lot of good lads who are out of the squad and not playing,” Morsy said in an interview with The Athletic’s The Totally Football League Show (21 mins, 10 secs) in which he also talked about working with McKenna, adding goals to his game and Cook’s time at the club, as well as the Blues’ prospects for the remainder of the campaign.

“Probably Kayden Jackson [is the best example]. For a long part of the season, he didn’t get a sniff, wasn’t involved, but he carried himself really well, got on with his work, kept his head down, was quiet.

“Then the new manager’s come in, he’s had an opportunity, he’s done really well and he’s ended up getting injured.

“But I just thought that was a great example just because he wasn’t in the squad, he wasn’t involved but he maintained just being a really good professionals.

“And then when he did [get in the squad], he definitely took his chance. He’s out of contract in the summer and I’m led to believe he’s going to sign a new deal here, which is great for him.

“To be honest, the lads have conducted themselves really well. Even James Norwood as well, James Norwood has probably got an unfair reputation really.

“But again when he wasn’t playing, he was really good, even when he was with the U23s, he wasn’t negative, he was really good, then he’s come in, he’s taken his chance back in the team.

“All the lads who haven’t been involved, Woolfy [Luke Woolfenden] the same, all good lads. And it helps really because in football it can change fast and I think because these lads have behaved how they’ve behaved as soon as they’ve had a chance, everyone’s got right behind them.

“You can see at different clubs or when players act in a certain way when they’re not in the team, it’s easy to hold a grudge, the players will have some resentment towards them, but I can honestly say the lads have been great really, really easy.”

I have to admit KJ has done really well under McKenna. I think with McKenna's guidance he will be a real asset next season, it will be like having a new forward come into the squad.

Delighted if Jackson gets a new deal, we all thought he was done but he proved us wrong and that alone is a great story.
Interested in Morsy's phrase "even James Norwood" .... clearly the reputation is widespread. Interested to see if he gets a new deal, I think we have an option but I understand wages are significant. Watch this space I guess......

McKenna will get the best out of Jackson and with his pace causing problems for opposition defences I would be happy for him to sign a new contract. I do , however , think that we will need to acquire a couple of proven strikers for next season.

Only time will tell with this one I guess, been a bit part player under the previous couple of managers so obviously something has been wrong. Doing well under KMc so fingers crossed KJ can become the 25-30 goal striker that we've been screaming out for.

I would be happy for him to remain. It's clear our players just need to he properly coached. Personally I would keep Norwood but not Bonne, bringing in a proven goal scorer. My cousin a Col U fan said the latter was a 10 game a season wonder. Sadly to date he has been proved right

Is anyone a tad worried we might lose our manager with just how well he's been doing.

I hope we don't and he's here for the very long term.

Looking back, a fairway now, when Jackson and Norwood were paired up under Hurst they were scoring for fun for about 6 weeks. This was on the back of Norwood's previous season scoring around 30! Lot of dirty water has gone under the bridge since then. Thought Norwood looked really sharp and fitter on Saturday.

Thankfully, a new era now dawns.

Lets be honest we're only judging him over 2 or 3 games (which he improved)...do think KM has the ability to get the most out of a fair percentage of our squad. It wouldn't overly bother me if he didn't sign...I'm sure Keiran with his ties to Man United could get us a decent season loan player to replace Bonne and also to successfully dip into the transfer market to get that 20+ goal striker we desperately need!

miltonsnephew - not the first time I've heard somebody post this sort of comment, I can't see it to be honest. He's only been here not even half a season and it's his first managerial position so I can't see him doing the 'dirty' at such an early stage in his career, I think it will be more of a worry if we don't get promoted next season and say we get in the play-offs and fail - then there is a possibility.

We seen over the years many players who have underperformed sudden look good when there's a new contract to play for
Kayden has looked better since KMK took over along with most of the other players
I still think he lacks the one vital ingredient, a strikers instinct which has always been assumed can't be taught you've either got it(Marcus Stewart) or you ain't
If KMK can coach that into him or coax it out of him then fair play
He's a better judge than me

We'd be top of the league with a Marcus Stewart now

He's better than I thought

Never been a Jackson basher so very pleased if he gets another contract.

We certainly have issues at the top end of the pitch and I'm not convinced Jackson is the man to sort them. In KMcK we trust thou and if this story is true, I'll go with it, but I think this is an area the manager will be addressing close season. As many have said, we are in dire need of “ a fix in the box”

miltonsnephew I don't think McKenna is doing that well that he will be offered any great jobs. Maybe a struggling Championship club might come in for him. KM is just a rookie and needs to stay in one place and prove himself (which is currently doing). Our club has built a very strong foundation for KM to be successful. In 5 years we could be in the Premier League and KM could be leaving us for Man Utd. or Spurs. In the meantime, he needs to get us promoted at least once and probably prove that he can get us competing near the top of the Championship.

TimmyH If KM sees enough in Jackson for a new contract to be offered to him. I don't think that KM can get us competing for automatic promotion with the current strikers we have unless someone like Simpson bursts through. In that case, some of the players that are currently here are worth keeping, but not too many that we don't have room for new arrivals. I think our problems in attack especially (but the whole team inherited from Cook in general) are related to balance. Jackson brings something different with his pace that others don't.

It's all to do with playing to his strengths . not a target man nor does he have any ability under high balls . Previous managers didn't seem to see this

Must admit I didn't rate KJ, but happy to have been proven wrong - just a damn shame the injury came when it did

I think Nors and Piggot may well be gone during the summer, probably Bonne as well if he doesn't start scoring again (Maybe Simpson if the contract isn't sorted?)

So like others I think we need 1 or 2 new blood up front

Sorry, still need to be convinced. Given his whole tenure, needs to be more than a couple of good matches. Yes he's quick, but technically…………………………?!?

imabeliever - pretty sure Hurst did not sign Norwood. It was Lambert who picked him up when we were relegated.

……………..if Bonne doesn't stay, we need at least one, probably two proven first choice goal scorers. Then we would really rip it up……………………!

I think Jackson scored 11 times and had 7 assists in the Championship if my memory is right so more than good enough for division 1 IMO.

Jackson did well in his first season scored goals and got plenty of assits.

Think he will do well next season, However think we need a goalscorer brought in for next season.
Don't think Norwood will be here next season as he has not really lived up to his potential. Like Bonne works hard and give defenders problem but not scoring enough.

If we were to kept Norwood and sign Bonne they might do well under KM.

But still think we need to buy a goalscorer who scores goals a Championship level.

Dog, thanks for that, I wasn't totally sure about the dates (seems like light-years ago).

I'll trust our managers judgement, but to say I remain unconvinced about KJ would be an understatement! £1.6m paid for him still makes me shudder!
