Woolfenden: The Club is Only Going One Way
Wednesday, 18th May 2022 20:30

Luke Woolfenden believes Town are only going in one direction, the centre-half having signed a new three-year deal with the Blues earlier today.

The 23-year-old, who has played every minute under boss Kieran McKenna, is pleased to have extended his contract having enjoyed the last six months at Portman Road under the new management.

“I'm really happy to have signed a new deal,” the former East Bergholt High school pupil told iFollow Ipswich.

“The club is only going one way in my opinion. When the offer came in I was delighted because I want to be involved in that.

“The manager has pushed me and shown belief in me. He's trying to help me improve my game and he wants me to keep working.

“I'm enjoying working with him as well as the other members of the coaching staff.

“I've been playing in the middle of the three at the back and it's a role I like. I get opportunities to sweep and read the game, but also drive forward. I need to get a few more shots in!

“This a great place to be and now the aim is to achieve something next season. I've enjoyed my break and having some time to relax, but I am really looking forward to getting back and getting to work.”

Great to see him achieving his potential as with a number of others under Kieran McKenna. Long may it continue and can we have some more long term deals completed please!

Always take with a huge dose of salt what players say or think...I hope this doesn't come back to bite him like the Lee Evans statement back in early Autumn that 'we'll only get better and better' - doh!

Great to see this guy absolutely flourish under KM, just as Burgess and Jackson began to do too.
I love that we are getting the core onto well paid long term deals, it shows intent and says "hands off" to suitors....

We were 11th in 19/20 season, 9th in 20/21 season & 11th in 21/22.
Hoping this season that Luke is right (assuming he means up & not sideways) as last season was the same optimism.
I'm sure there will be many saying "yeah, but this season will be different", like many an optimistic fan does. I'm hoping so too.
KM's overall stats bode well compared to previous few managers, but hoping the blip towards the end of last season was the stutter before the sprint.

Exactly! JewellintheTown - that's a poor set of stats right there!

Wake up tempzzz...smell the coffee! the last 3 seasons have been poor! doesn't mean the future will be though, but some caution needs to be applied particularly when it comes from a players mouth.

Hope not sideways Bobble. I'm hopeful that next season we can do a bit better and make it to 5th or 6th in the play-offs.

If we remain in this division too long we could end up in a very strange situation (great facilities, great training grounds, great season ticket numbers, good links and stuck in mid-table Division 3).

At the end of the day, we should be better than this. The fact that young fans now refer to Coventry, Wycombe, Luton etc as bigger clubs than us is a bad sign. Yes, in higher divisions or positions in the league? Yes. But bigger? No.

One would hope that is the ‘understatement of the past decade' - we certainly need to after a decade of slide and stagnation.
At this stage talk is cheap and costing nothing - let's hope any ground work in respect of ‘any' potential new signings has already been done.
We've been right here before - many times !!!
Hope is eternal, and that going forward will be different.
But will it ?? - we'll know for sure by Xmas !!!

Wolfy had a solid second half of last season. If he continues to develop and builds up his strength we could be seeing the birth of a legend. I just hope we keep hold of him.
