Burns Left Out of Wales Squad For World Cup Play-Off
Sunday, 5th Jun 2022 10:25

Town wing-back Wes Burns has been left out of the 23-man Wales squad for this evening’s World Cup play-off against Ukraine in Cardiff (Sky Sports Football/Main Event, 5pm).

Burns made his debut at left wing-back in Wednesday’s 2-1 UEFA Nations League tie in Poland and had hoped to be involved against the Ukrainians but with FIFA limiting World Cup matchday squads to 23, five of the 28 players currently with Wales have been left out, among them Burns.

The 27-year-old has other chances to add to his caps following today’s game with Wales continuing their Nations League campaign against the Netherlands at Cardiff on Wednesday 8th June and away on Tuesday 14th June, and a home match against Belgium on Saturday 11th June.

Former Blues striker Kieffer Moore, ex-loanee Jonny Williams and Brennan Johnson, son of 1990s Town striker David, are all in the squad as the Welsh look to qualify for the finals for the first time since 1958.

Wales: 1 Wayne Hennessey (Burnley), 2 Chris Gunter (Unattached), 3 Neco Williams (Liverpool), 4 Ben Davies (Tottenham), 5 Chris Mepham (Bournemouth), 6 Joe Rodon (Tottenham), 7 Joe Allen (Stoke City), 8 Harry Wilson (Fulham), 9 Brennan Johnson (Nottm Forest), 10 Aaron Ramsey (Juventus), 11 Gareth Bale (Real Madrid), 12 Danny Ward (Leicester City), 13 Kieffer Moore (Cardiff City), 14 Connor Roberts (Burnley), 15 Ethan Ampadu (Chelsea), 16 Joe Morrell (Portsmouth), 17 Rhys Norrington-Davies (Sheffield United), 18 Jonathan Williams (Swindon Town), 19 Mark Harris (Cardiff City), 20 Daniel James (Leeds United), 21 Adam Davies (Sheffield United), 22 Sorba Thomas (Huddersfield Town), 23 Rabbi Matondo (Schalke 04). Missing out: Oliver Denham (Cardiff City), Matthew Smith (MK Dons), Dylan Levitt (Manchester United), Rubin Colwill (Cardiff City), Wes Burns (Ipswich Town).

Great debut,. Unlucky not to be involved tonight. Look forward to seeing you rip up the turf at Portman Road next season.

Another reason to hope that Wales lose (and Ukraine win).

Chris Gunter...unattached....plays on both flanks......now wouldn't it be good if we had Burns on one side and Gunter on the other.

Should have been selected for Wales. Deserve to lose now!

I don't understand anyone wanting Wales to lose. I have no Welsh connection but I'm British and even want the Jocks to win generally. Wouldn't it be amazing to have a Town player at the World Cup again?

Monkeyblue. So you think it would be amazing for town to have burns playing in the world Cup? While we're gonna have to play on without him?

Big mistake by Wales. Burns is in form. So it'll be their funeral tonight I think and from a Town perspective I hope they lose tonight .

The fact that his is not playing assures me he will start next season at Portman Road. If he'd have played we would have lost him.

is it possible that there are discussions behind closed doors where Town might ask that he not be picked because he is more needed here?:

Well doesn't a club have to give permission for their player(s) to be released for international duty ? They are after all the players employer .

Wes Burns was called into the squad because of the number of games in such a short period of time, at the end of the season; but was never expected to go straight into the starting line up for this key game (final), ahead of the squad of players that got Wales this far. From what I saw & all reports I read, he had a good game last week & will no doubt get more game time in the next few Nations League games, but this was always going to be a game where Wales would stick with their tried & tested players.
If he makes the Wales squad & team in the future, I'll be pleased for him, wish him well & wish Wales well.

I can only assume the Welsh are well stocked on left and right if they can leave Burns out, either that or they haven't done their scouting very well this season, utterly fantastic player and from what I have read and heard a tremendous character as well.

Let's face it, as Town supporters we are bias about Burns and his right to be in the team but I'm sure the Welsh managers knows what he's doing. Although there is no way Wales are going to win against a Ukraine side who are playing for much more than a place at the World Cup.

@blues1 Yes… firstly because to get in the squad he would have been playing well at the start of the season and secondly I have empathy… do you want to tell Wes Burns that you are so selfish you would rather him miss out on the chance of a World Cup so we can beat Bolton? As it's stands thankfully wales will go through and we'll have a Wes Burns so motivated at the start of the season to prove he needs to go to Qatar.

@Blues1…. Given wales are through I assume you want burns to play badly so he doesn't go to the World Cup? You say some sanctimonious stuff pretending you have some secret knowledge but your attitude to wales and Butns just makes you look like a pathetic….not allowed to say what, but you should be ashamed of yourself

Monkeyblue. Yes bcse frankly I dont give a damn about wales. Of course it would be disappointing for burns if he wasn't picked, and yes I'd have some empathy with him, but my only concern is what is best for itfc. And being without burns for anything up to a month would not be good for us. If ud rather burns go to the world Cup than want the best for the club u support, that's ur prerogative. But I guarantee if him going was to ultimately cost us promotion, ud be the 1st to complain.

Well put Len Brennan! There are some strange views from some. We should be supporting Wes. Very pleased he got a full cap. Very pleased Wales are in the World Cup. They look like a good side. Wes might have a chance to fight for a place in the squad. Good luck to him. Love to see a Town player in the World Cup! If not, 1 cap is better than none!

@blues1 hat and idiot. Of course burns would be in the side of fit and available you would assume but if him being at the World Cup screws up our month we are not good enough to go up. He had a great season but we need far more than burns to step up. That you would rather they hadn't qualified so there is no chance we'd be without him is absolutely pathetic. If burns being away for a month costs us promotion McK has done a bad job. As it happens wales are through and whilst I want us to get promotors I also want Burns to get in the Welsh squad.

Wes will be playing like a man possessed to make that World Cup squad. Watch out L1! Pity Egypt diddnt qualify, would have been great to have Morsey fighting for a place!
