Town to Sign Former Morecambe Full-Back Leigh
Monday, 20th Jun 2022 11:20

Town are closing in on the signing of former Morecambe left-back Greg Leigh.

We understand the 27-year-old Jamaica international is at the club with the deal set to be confirmed later today.

Leigh left the Shrimps at the end of 2021/22 having spent one year at the Mazuma Stadium, making 38 starts and three sub appearances, scoring twice.

Sale-born Leigh, who can also operate on the right and in wide midfield, came through the youth ranks at Manchester City and spent a spell on loan at Crewe during his time as a Citizen.

Having been unable to break into the first team at City, Leigh moved on to Bradford on a free transfer in the summer of 2015. After featuring infrequently, the 5ft 11in tall full-back joined Bury the following summer.

Capped six times by England at U19 level before later changing his allegiance to Jamaica with whom he has won two full caps, Leigh spent two years with the Shakers before moving to Dutch side NAC Breda in June 2018.

A year later he joined Aberdeen on loan for the 2019/20 season, then made that switch permanent the following summer after coming close to joining Rotherham. Having suffered a serious hamstring injury, he was released at the end of 2020/21 when he signed for Morecambe.

Leigh will become Town’s third signing of the summer following the recruitment of Freddie Ladapo and Dom Ball, also on free transfers.

That the Blues are adding to their left-back/left wing-back options this summer is little surprise and Leigh may not be the only addition before the campaign gets under way.

The first-team squad is back at Playford Road today for the start of pre-season training.

Finidi was less crap than being consistently played as a wide player when really he should have been a central playmaker with the team built around him. That 3-1 against Derby was still probably the most impressive performance in an Ipswich shirt I've witnessed, albeit being too young to have seen the Robson years in their full glory... Sereni was a decent player with a rubbish temperament imho rather like lazy Marcus Bent.

Souperjim. Yes, we paid a small but decent fee for Cresswell. And he was just a promising player at that time. No1 really knew much about him. As forxMings, a mi imal fee and no1 had ever heard of him when we signed him, so hardly already in the up. The point iwas making with them tho, mimgs in particular, zwas that fans slagged off he fact we were signing them, just as the are with this guy. Same as fans gave with several of our free signings, only for thrm to turn out to be good players. Whereas we've paid good money for players in the past, everyone's got excited at them signing only for them to turn out to be rubbish. Free transfer doesn't necessarily mean bad player.

As many have said "Must give him a chance". Must admit though am a bit confused at the business done by the club so far, three freebies. That's not to say they won't be any great shakes though. Look at Pogba at Man Utd. around 90 million and I can only remember a handful of games where he was decent, the rest he was either non existent or injured. But I do expect a couple of headline players coming in especially a decent forward or two,.

iaintaylorx who was excited about Dominic Thompson!? Edmundson and Walton came from English and Scottish premier league clubs I was excited when we signed them were you on here slating them when they signed ? It's a bit depressing we are signing players out of contract at clubs like morcambe but that's where we are now isn't it I suppose

He played really well against us at Morecambe in February - maybe that is why we signed in. I thought that he troubled Burns quite a lot

It's a very underwhelming signing on paper this one, but some of our big buys under Cook failed miserably, most notably Harper and Pigott and Janoi Donacien, signed by Hurst, has excelled, so you never really know I guess.

Wes Burns - joined us at 27, "never done anything", "L1 level" etc. Age 28 he is now an international who may be going to the WC, top scorer from wing back, and swept the awards board."

Keiffer Moore - joined for peanuts, "reserve in the National League", absolutely awful for us. A few years later he has had several expensive moves, promoted to the PL, an international who will definitely go to the WC. I bet Rotherham fans were really thrilled when they signed him from us!

So, who on here can really judge? The club has built a whole analytics / recruitment dept with an extremely highly rated coach looking to use and coach good players. Those muttering about lower league, "done nothing", cheap / free players really ought to wait and see.

Three signings for no fees, simply means we have our entire transfer budget still left…

Vandusen Finidi was a winger the whole of his career. Never played in the centre. And sereni was an awful keeper.

Bazza8564. Thats true as far as transfer fees go. But remember, free transfers cost money as well. So we're still spending some of it.

Don't know anything about the player but trust McKenna and his advisers. Perhaps if we had paid half a million for him the numpties on here would be getting excited. I like the fact we are going for a more physical approach Thompson was ok but like a lot of our players was too lightweight for me Kenlock, Clements etc. Penney has done ok under McKenna but needs competition.

@Bazza you said previously something along the lines that the transfer budget had been set assuming we would be in the championship and that you had heard the club had decided to stick with that budget. Have you heard any further news ?

hhhmmm don't know a lot about him so can't really comment, noticed a few on here saying 'trust in McKenna', well the players he brought in on loan (Bakinson and Thompson) were mixed to be honest so it is a case of only time will tell...

KM has a certain way that he wants town to play and he needs players that fit into his plans. Not every signing needs to be a proven star as long as they can do the job asked of them to a high level. KM must think that this lad fits the bill. Every piece of a jigsaw doesn't have to be pretty as long as the completed picture is.

I think they are going after Sam parkin and tamas priskin to lead our attack as well !

I think a lot of people have forgotten about Corrie Ndaba who was outstanding at Salford last season and seems to have filled out a bit physically. This will probably mean that Baggott will go out on loan for a season as in my reckoning he's one year behind Ndaba in his development especially physically. He played well against Charlton but looked a bit unsteady when it got physical in our penalty area.

Don't know anything about him & I take the point others have made about his age & career to date, however, he does appear to fit the mold for what we are looking for on the left side. Predominantly a defender, but with plenty of experience at both wing back & left side of midfield; plus he was initially a striker, so he should provide a real goal threat when he gets forward. A bit of a Wes Burns story, just waiting for his chance in a good side, where he is given license to get in the box, perhaps??
To be honest, I'm still hopeful that Kyle Edwards is going to be given a shot at LWB this season; he has all the attributes to be a sensation at this level, whether he has the character & discipline remains to be seen.

A decent squad player I think but nothing to get excited about. Guess we are saving our transfer funds for a quality striker - an audacious bid for Scott Twine perhaps?

Let's hope we are all looking at his record and are wrong in our conclusions

If he has the speed of a Jamaican sprinter he will be faster than Penney. All KM has to do is to coach him into another WB. Another Striker and a Midfielder will do nicely before we kick off the new season and with these freebies; there must be some money to spend.

Nothing wrong with a free transfer, hopefully its leaving the funds for a star striker.

Where is our striker? We really need to have more fire power.

Not exactly inspiring signings, wonder if Kieron has been told work on a minimal budget…can't see use going for Twine
