Town Closing in On Davis Signing
Monday, 25th Jul 2022 17:46

Town are closing in on the signing of Leeds United left-back Leif Davis and we understand the deal is expected to be confirmed in the next 48 hours.

TWTD revealed earlier this month that the Blues had made an offer of £1 million mark plus a further £500,000 in potential top-ups for the 22-year-old.

The final fee is likely to be in excess of that figure with discussions between the clubs having been ongoing for a number of weeks while Davis has been away with the Leeds squad on their pre-season tour of Australia.

We understand that the clubs have agreed a deal but the move is not yet quite done with some paperwork still to be completed but that it’s anticipated it will go through in the next couple of days.

Newcastle-born Davis was with Morecambe’s youth set-up as a schoolboy before joining the Elland Road club’s academy in July 2018.

Davis, who is 6ft tall and can also operate as a wing-back and at centre-half, spent last season on loan at AFC Bournemouth in the Championship, making 10 starts and five sub appearances, a move which was initially viewed as a precursor to a permanent switch.

However, injury limited his involvement and he returned to Elland Road before the end of the campaign.

For his parent club Davis has made six first-team starts and has made eight appearances from the bench.

Town have already signed one left-back this summer, former Morecambe man Greg Leigh, however it had been expected that they would look to bring in a second before the start of the season.

Davis's impending arrival may well see Matt Penney move on before the end of the window.

Town are still continuing their pursuit of Leicester striker George Hirst but face opposition from Championship clubs for the former Sheffield Wednesday youngster from sides understood to include Blackpool and Blackburn, while Portsmouth remain keen on a second loan for the 23-year-old. We understand one of the Championship clubs has made an offer.

According to the Portsmouth News, the Foxes are asking £2 million for Hirst, who is the son of former England international David.

The Blues are also still eyeing a return for ex-loanee Bersant Celina, whose switch to Turkish side Kasımpaşa broke down last week, but with no progress believed to have been made over the weekend.

Hurst and Davis would be great signings at this level and a real statement of intent. Celina as well, would be the icing on the top.

Was worried when I saw Penney start on Saturday
If this guy stays fit, could be a great signing and definitely a position we need to improve in

Great news if and when the Davis deal goes through.
Don't think the Hirst deal will be quite so straightforward, with higher clubs interested, could be difficult to get over the line.Hope it still happens, but if not will have to look at other targets (abroad maybe ?)

Show us your shirt Lief. It's never done until we see that. I wonder if he'll get some pitch time v Southend or at least a pitch side photo op and introduction to the fans. I'd like to see Hirst holding up his shirt as part of the pre-match build up v Bolton. I imagine Bolton will come too soon for either of them to get a start due to a lack of match fitness.

NOT convinced BC is the whole answer to anything ; lots of potential ,can bring excitement ,can be threatening BUT with all his speed and trickery he still often fails to execute a cross properly or with accuracy !
However , K M knows exactly what he needs ,what he can do to coach and improve and indicated last season he'd like to work with and on BC for longer .
A more imposing L/ B - L/H will be a valuable addition and a proven striker should top off the squad very nicely .

We are chasing players who will not only be top quality signing for League 1, but would also be likely first XI contenders if we were to win promotion to the Championship; that's an exciting prospect.
I don't know much about Davis tbh, but if Bournemouth had agreed a deal with an expectation of signing him permanently at the end of last season, as one of the favourites for promotion to the Premier League, it suggests that they rated his abilities highly. It was injury, as opposed to lack of ability, that put an end to that; if we get him & keep him fit, we could have our best full back since Mings or even Cresswell, hopefully.
Leigh has looked like a good addition already.

I hope we do get the signing of Lief Davis over the line. He should be an outstanding player in League 1. Another striker would be nice but I think Hirst will go to a Championship club. Celina is s match winner on his day and I would be happy if he came back but only if the cost is right because he is inconsistent and we have 3 other good number 10's.

Greg Leigh will be glad he signed !!!
And Matt Penneys a**e will be nipping up !!!
Penney must be nailed on to go now leaving 2 decent left backs to fight it out. The winner will be the one who can defend as well getting forward and providing that quality delivery into the box that we lacked last season. KM has already stated he is building a squad not a first choice 11.

Unfortunate for Penney - I thought he played pretty well on Saturday, better defensively and going forward than Wes Burns (who was pretty anonymous). But there's no doubt it was a problem position last season, and the fact that he can move into the centre makes him flexible enough to cover a few positions.

Potentially brilliant - another quality striker and we are good to go as far as I'm concerned…………

Let's hope Burns was having an off day and last season was not a flash in the pan

Great signing that was agreed some weeks back….Most fans agree a 20 plus goals striker is needed.
Not sure Hirst who hasn't scored 20 goals so far in his pro career is the answer. I think the 20 plus goal scorer is already in the building….

My mate supports Leeds and had nothing but good things to say about Davis. He reckons that the only reason for him to move on right now is that he's not Premier League standard yet.

Massive signing if he stays fit. The left back position now looks very strong with Leigh looking very impressive so far. Burns started pre season later than the others due to Wales commitments so he's behind the others in fitness. I don't think McKenna was too bothered about not going up last season it gave him a good chance to analysis the squad. If we do get promoted this season we will be far better prepared to handle the quality of the championship as quite a few of the players already have championship experience.
