Adams: No Complaints

Morecambe boss Derek Adams had no complaints regarding the result following his side’s 4-0 drubbing at Portman Road last night, although felt Freddie Ladapo's second goal might have been offside.

Ladapo and Conor Chaplin netted two apiece in the first half to see the Blues to a comfortable win.

“We've got no complaints,” Adams told his club’s official website. “[Portman Road is] a really tough venue to come to at the best of times, we obviously knew on Saturday with Oxford beating Ipswich that it was going to be a hard night for us.

“It didn't start too well for us because they got a massive break, we cleared the ball off the top of our defender's head, it's hit our player in the face and it's fallen for their player to get the first goal.

“Quite quickly after that, we made a mistake in the middle of the park, we gave the ball away, they break on us and I think it's actually slightly offside, the second goal, then they get a third and then a fourth right on half-time. Second half, we worked ever so hard to keep the scoreline down.”

Adams made a quadruple substitution at the break as he sought to tighten things up and the Blues were unable to add to their goals in the second half.

“It was never going to be easy, we made four substitutions at half-time, the reason for that was to give players game time,” he added.

“We were out of the game, the game was finished, we were never going to draw it, we were never going to win it.

"To be fair, the players who came on acquitted themselves well. It was important to give these players some game time, I think coming away to Ipswich Town, one of the biggest clubs in this league, we just worked away and tried to stay in the game as long as we could.”

BobbyBell added 13:24 - Jan 25 I was also concerned with the second half. Everything slowed down and we didn't seem fired up to score more goals. With a 4 goal cushion this was an ideal time to take chances and break down a stubborn defense. I felt it was a wasted opportunity to try some adventurous risk taking attacking.

Goal 1 - their guy heads the ball downwards into the danger area. Flicks off a heel but was a rubbish clearance regardless.

Goal 2 - checked back on the highlights. Ladapo very clearly onside when Broadhead releases the ball. None of their defenders claimed offside so don't know where he's getting that from.

Overall, it got scrappy after the break, but the number of subs on both sides changed the game. We'd won by that stage and they wanted to limit the damage. Not sure we should read too much into it. Hirst didn't really have much service so I found it hard to judge him. Impressed with new boys Clarke & Broadhead. My Stoke mate is a season ticket holder and was disappointed to lose him

TimmyH added 17:37 - Jan 25 Morecambe fell into the trap after their 3 straight home wins that they could come here and take us on and play an expansive game...they found out they weren't good enough and giving the ball away cheaply to their cost...should have learnt from other teams that shut up shop.

@62wasbest, I think your points are well made. I was walking out of the ground last night in the company of Mrs Budgieplucker who also has a season ticket with me. She asked why I seemed flat after such a good victory. In a sense I was feeling guilty feeling like that, I am signed up to the Kieron McKenna fan club and hope he continues to be our manager for a long time to come, I see the parallels with the young Bobby Robson and I was lucky to witness all of the Robson years. I was trying to put my finger on it, it wasn't a sense of unsatisfied greed by expecting to see another 4 goals in the second half which would have been perhaps unrealistic to maintain that tempo, but more a sense of that we had done enough to win the match and we could take our foot of the pedal in the second half. I think we thought we would still continue to dictate but some credit to Morecambe by adjusting and neutralising much of our play. Maybe we had at last the turn of luck in our favour getting the first goal and if Ladapo was slightly offside (although I was in line with him when the ball was played and I think he was probably marginally onside but I immediatelI looked at the lino straight away). So I was being slightly cautious about how good our performance was and felt we disrupted our own rhythm in the second half by making all the changes rather than putting out a message to the rest of the league that we can be a relentless and ruthless force that fights to the end, psychologically putting the fear of god into the rest of the league. I don't think any player who went on the second half had any other intention than trying to go and take the game to the opposition but certain players to me whilst maybe showing the skills in training continue not to be able to reproduce on the big stage, or make good decisions.

Our fans have been magnificent this season and I felt we deserved a little more in the second half and if Morecambe stopped us playing then there is certainly a message there. It was a game of two half's I would have just liked to have won both half's!!!!
