Sheeran: I'll Play Portman Road When This Tour Ends
Friday, 26th May 2023 19:47

Town sponsor Ed Sheeran says he hopes to play a Portman Road concert once he finishes his ongoing world tour.

Sheeran, who is currently in the US and plays Atlanta tomorrow, took questions from fans on his Instagram account earlier this evening and was asked about the possibility of playing Portman Road.

The 32-year-old, a lifelong fan who has an executive box in the Magnus Group West Stand, responded: “Whenever this tour ends, still got a lot of countries to do though.”

Quizzed on the potential for Sheeran to play at Portman Road at the Fans’ Forum in September, Town CEO Mark Ashton said: “It would ultimately be fantastic. The step-through starts with the south-east corner, so the screen has been placed at a height that we can get loading vehicles in and out for concerts, pitch renovations etc.

“It goes to what [chairman] Mike [O’Leary] said, this is why the purchase of the land behind the south-east corner was so important because we can then start to reconfigure the turnstiles, which opens the whole stadium up for potential.

“An Ed Sheeran concert would be amazing, but it opens it up for concerts in general and I think that’s definitely going to be part of our plan moving forward.”

Sheeran, who has been allocated squad number 17 for the last two seasons, also reiterated that he would be sponsoring the Blues’ shirts for a third season, an announcement having been made in October.

Thats a good effort. No club songs or other things, sponsorhip and a concert, these are good things for the club.

Metallica are currently doing a 2 year stadium tour, would love to see them here...as well as Ed playing here too of course....I remember seeing Ed at Christchurch park music day in 2009/2010, crazy to see where he is now, one of the biggest music stars in the world!

Tickets for this would be like Gold Dust, and I hope he would be multiple dates because the revenue stream that the club could attract would be awesome.

Fantastic idea and a huge commercial opportunity for the club and Ed.
I would also like Ed to write a pre match anthem which the club and fans could adopt prior to kick off at home matches. Many clubs have one and the Arsenal have one specific to them.
Powers that be get on the case.

Best concert I ever went to was in Cologne football stadium in 1986. The lineup was Gary Moore, Level 42, Marillion and Queen. I wasn't much of a fan of Queen until then, but man what an experience to be part of, seeing Freddie Mercury on stage at night in front of 50,000 people. I reckon Ed could really get things rocking at PR, could be sold out for a week.

Have to agree with NITFC, know you well and we as season ticket holders have stayed with the club over the horrendous last 18 years. Loyalty paid back ?

I believe his reply, when asked about sponsoring the shirt again in 23/24, was "does a bear **** in the woods!)
