Baggott has looked strong & assured when he has played in the cup games this season, & in his pre-season minutes that I saw. He is a decent defender, who is comfortable on the ball going forward, which suits our style of play. The problem for him though, is that at this stage of his development, he needs to be playing regular first team/senior football. He may be a guaranteed starter for Indonesia, but being a squad player - and not even in the match day squad for league games - would not see him getting called up for most international sides, due to lack of matches; we see that with the likes of Jack Taylor, who would surely make the Ireland squad if he were starting here in the league. Given the form of Woolfenden & Burgess this year, the encouraging return of Edmondson in recent games, plus the fact that Tuanzebe is now fit & ready for consideration, Elkan is our 5th choice centre half, so outside of the game against Fulham in the cup, he's very unlikely to play much, if at all, for us again this season, especially with the manager's preference for loading the bench with attacking options & having more versatile players like Dom Ball and Matt Clarke/Brandon Williams to cover along the back line. With the sustained fitness of Tuanzebe being the only caveat, I think it is both likely & preferable that Elkan goes out on loan to a League 1 club for the second half of the sesson, so that he can get a run of games at a good level & establish himself. Had we managed to sign McNally, and it appears the club thought it was happening, or Trusty, Baggott was set to go out on loan in August. Similarly, if Tuanzebe was match fit & signed in time, he would have been allowed go, so I believe it is inevitable that he will move on loan in January, and it will be the right call for both the club & himself. | |
