Rotherham: No Concerns About Playing Surface
Friday, 20th Oct 2023 10:35

Rotherham United have issued a statement reassuring supporters that they have no concerns regarding this evening’s game at the New York Stadium with no pitch inspection planned, despite the heavy rain.

The Millers say the surface, which underwent significant work over the summer, will be monitored between now and the 8pm kick-off but currently there are no worries regarding its playability.

The statement reads: “Rotherham United would like to reassure supporters travelling to tonight’s game that the club currently has no concerns about the playing surface at AESSEAL New York Stadium, despite the inclement weather around the UK at present.

“The club’s groundstaff have – and will continue to – monitor the condition of the pitch in the build-up to tonight’s 8pm kick off against Ipswich Town but, at present, have no concerns about a potential postponement.

“As a result, there are currently NO pitch inspections planned ahead of tonight’s game but should this change throughout the course of the day, we will communicate that message at the earliest possible opportunity.

“We do recognise that the weather may have affected travel plans for supporters attending the match and would remind those same fans to exercise caution on their route to the stadium and allow plenty of time to account for any delays that the weather may have had on their journey.

“As always, we would advise fans travelling to check the latest traffic updates and information from public transport providers ahead of their trip.”

Fans travelling by train should note that Rotherham Central station is currently closed due to flooding.

No concerns what so ever but the railway station that is shut due to flooding is only 10 minutes away !!

Must be some pitch. Everywhere here is under water and had no where near the amount of rain they have

I'm two miles away ....I'd be amazed if it goes ahead given how it is now and the rain still forecasted to come.

Rotherham will be desperate to play this game as they know tha pitch won't suit our free flowing football.

Sounds dodgy!

Isn't it up to the referee to decide if a pitch inspection is required?

You’d hope so wouldn’t you. Their club appears to show scant regard re safety to everything outside the realms of the bloody pitch!

I expect they have the sprinklers operating too, just to make sure we can't play decent football on it...

The area including the Stadium (next to the River Don), is on a Flood Alert. It isn't just the pitch they should be worrying about.

Probably some pressure from Sky to play , but surely the decision is down to the ref ?

Very confusing comments…..are we not the footballing side who prefers “Wet” pitches????
A non footballing side would struggle to control the ball being zipped about on a wet surface???
It’s why we spent £1m on our sprinkler system…..so we could drench the pitch before the game, then again at half time……

So if they flood the pitch we can always bring on a sub. Should have been called off by now. As people are saying, Sky and they're trying to keep the game on whatever the weather, to bring us down to their level. So Don Goodman and co can say it's a great leveller

I see the heaviest rainfall in South Yorkshire ( Sheffield/ Rotherham) is due from late afternoon today and through this evening.

I won't be travelling. Thought about it a lot over the last 24 hours, but the weather is too dodgy. I hope it goes ahead for all of those who have taken the risk. Fair play to you all.

BBC Weather says Rotherham Heavy Rain from 14:00 to midnight 90%-100%
I presume Rotherham will play in flippers & snorkels to gain advantage then.

My money is on SKY pressing hard for the game to go ahead, a tame indecisive ref and the match abandoned at half time with Town 3-0 up. Thousands of Town supporters stranded in Yorkshire.

This is SUCH a tricky one!!
I live in South Lincolnshire, and plan to leave at 16.30 for the game, but it's BUCKETING down, and therefore hard to imagine the game being played safely (let alone fans being made to travel in abysmal circumstances!)
Like others have noted, I have no doubt SKY will be pressurising Rotherham to make such statements, as they couldn't care less if it gets cancelled late on/during the match.
As in every single area of modern life: Money Rules (and 'consumers' are irrelevant!!)

I live in Bolsover, 18 miles away and bought a ticket to watch tonight. It’s been bucketing down since 2am this morning and forecast not to let up until 11pm. Shocked to hear they are not even planning a pitch inspection. They must be hoping the pitch catches us out!

The main roads will be fine, it will effect those in remote locations more obviously.

Apart from the train station being closed, I cant see how the game can be called off if they upgraded the drainage and cover the pitch.

I hate the idea of further game congestion and id like us to get through these games before further injuries and international call ups (Asia cup) take their toll.

My biggest worry is that these conditions will truly aid Rotherham and implead us.

From memory the station is in a dip and you have to walk down onto the platform - so not surprised that's flooded. But the ground is a bit higher above sea level halfway up a hill isn't it? Even so that doesn't mean that fans travelling (inc. home fans) will have it any easier even if the pitch is ok.
