Town boss Kieran McKenna has paid tribute to Manchester United and England legend Sir Bobby Charlton, who died on Saturday aged 86.

Charlton was a member of Sir Alf Ramsey’s 1966 World Cup-winning England team, as well as a European Cup winner with United in 1968, in which he scored twice, 10 years after surviving the Munich Air Disaster in which eight of his teammates died.

McKenna got to know Charlton during his time working at Old Trafford prior to taking charge of the Blues.

“I think as everyone who came across him has said, what a wonderful gentleman,” McKenna told TownTV.

“Fantastic achievements he had in football as a player predominantly. The wonderful things he did were before my time to watch live, but you watch the videos, what a wonderful player, and how everyone speaks about him.

“But more so for me, going there as a youth team coach and the way he would come down to the dressing room before certain games and his humble manner and his politeness, and he was just a wonderful human being.

“He will be sorely, sorely missed by everyone in the football community, certainly missed by everyone associated with Manchester United and it was sad news, but a time to reflect on his great achievements and great impact on so many people as well.”
