Edwards Returns From Oxford Loan
Monday, 8th Jan 2024 14:45

Blues winger Kyle Edwards has returned to Town having had his loan spell with League One Oxford United cut short.

Edwards made four starts and two sub appearances for the U’s, scoring twice, but hasn’t featured since November due to a hamstring injury for which he is still undergoing rehabilitation.

The 25-year-old, who was due to remain at the Kassam Stadium until the end of the season, is out of contract with Town at the end of the season having moved to Portman Road after leaving West Brom in the summer of 2021.

Edwards didn’t appear for the Blues before departing for Oxford in the summer, so would be able to move elsewhere on loan during this window if his fitness allows.

Whilst I accept this is unlikely, I would rather play Kyle than Omari tbh. At least the time invested would be going into our own player, plus he could on occasion demonstrate match winning talent. Omari, again on Saturday, showed lots of poor decision making.

@jugsy - Omari also has more goals and assists in half a season than Edwards does in his entire time,
Hutchinson is also highly thought of at Chelsea, and is 5 years younger, so what on earth point are you trying to make with this dire take?

Jugsy. What? Omari also did a lot of good stuff too. Of course he won't get everything right. Hes a young lad. As for ur point about putting time into our own player? Edwards will walk away at the end of the season anyway, as he went to oxford in the1st place bcse he'd asked to leave. So no different which one we put time into.

I was told last week that Omari has no future at all at Chelsea. In fairness I do not know the reliability of the source so time will tell. For me he has a lot of ability and just needs a goal at Portman Road to move him up to the next level.

"able to move elsewhere on loan during this window if his fitness allows". It sounds like he was doing well at Oxford Utd., so they should have just kept him. It better for him to play proper matches and maybe win a contract rather than playing for our reserves if he recovers after the window shuts.

@Mediocre_Quick - factually not true. And i'm not concerned about how Chelsea feel about him, I'm more concerned about our season and what's best for Town. He's not performed well for us for a while and I always felt Kyle had the ability to change games for us. I totally understand and appreciate that Kyle wants to play more football and we weren't offering him that.

@blues1 - a couple of good defensive covers, but he also played an awful backpass to a Dons play that fortunately Woolfie handled in the end. And this is against a League Two team, I didn't see anything different in him than we see on a weekly basis; holding the ball too long, taking too many touches and final execution (whether a shot or pass) being poor.

Would love for Omari to kick on, reduce these issues and add more to the team, but i'm not seeing it.

I like Kyle but I do think he's probably been sold, and rightly so. Omari is far more in the McKenna mould, and has performed consistently in my opinion.

Hutchinson will never get in the Chelsea side for at least sometime as he is not anywhere near Prem standards.
If Town go up he is not a player Town should try to buy unless it’s to loan him out to a Championship side for the future.
He will be a very expensive player to buy just to loan out.
Championship is his level at the minute and doing well for Town

“Returned from loan”?? I was convinced we’d sold him to them….

Off topic, but any news on Stansfield being recalled by Fulham ?

Not going to happen but it would fascinating to see Omari on the right and Kyle on the left as impact subs.

Opposition wouldn't know what's hit them!

Jugsy - He's not performed well for us for a while - are you, dumb? He's saved us a good few times when we've needed it, he's still young and raw too, the ideal player to work under McKenna, Edwards on the other hand, is 25, and clearly isn't seen as part of, or the future of this side

Gforce I'm guessing that the situation was in limbo until Birmingham had a manager. Mogga is a good manager for Stansfield to have helping him develop, so I wouldn't be surprised if Fulham saw it as too much of a risk to unsettle him. Then again the pull toward a promotion push with KM may be too great to resist.

Firstly, let's the get the words assist, pre-assist, and involvements out of the game. Stupid made up terms to paper over the cracks when an individual is performing sh*t. Edwards is plenty good enough for us. On several occasions last season he affected games with brilliant cameos from the bench and was criminally underplayed. Would I start him ahead of Hutchinson....possibly not, but there isn't a yawning gap between them in ability. If someone tells me that Jackson and Ladapo are good enough for this level but Edwards isn't.....you need your bumps felt.

@Mediocre_Quick - no need to get offensive, quite unnecessary. Someone having a difference of opinion on players doesn't justify suggesting someone to be 'dumb'.

If you'd done your due diligence, you would see that Omari has not assisted and scored as many as Kyle, yet you made the claim. I wouldn't call you 'dumb' however.

I'd also suggest 'saved us' is overly generous and having watched nearly all of our games, i'm hard pressed to think of those occasions. Happy to be proven wrong, when were they? Scoring against Southampton is by far his highlight and deserving of praise. But that was a long time ago and 'good few times'? Not convinced.

I agree with those saying that there's not much difference between Edwards and Hutchinson in terms of ability and end product. Hutchinson has definitely gone off the boil recently. Looked promising at Southampton but has rarely taken his opportunities since.

And I agree with chepstowblue that Jackson is no better than either.

However, Edwards is injured. If we kept him for the next six months, he could still be weeks away from fitness. He's not going to be making an immediate impact. Surely this move is to push for a small fee from someone before he leaves on a free? Personally, bit gutted it didn't work out for him here as he's great to watch (if he does leave).

Anyway, Sarmiento will surely be a big upgrade on both.

If we are in the Premier next season and looking to consolidate our status, or in the Championship looking to push for promotion, I don't believe either Edwards or Hutchinson are good enough and neither is Jackson. We would definitely need better cover for that wide right berth.

Hutchinson has performed in the Championship about as well if not better than Edwards did in League One. Anyway, Edwards is injured, so it's a moot point.

It doesn’t say who ended the loan deal. Oxford have just lost Everton loan winger Stan Mills for the season to injury so they’re probably looking for a less injury prone winger.

Both Edwards and Hutchinson are similar sort of players. Hutchinson though has performed in the championship and has had a bigger impact on games than Edwards who has mostly performed in league one at Town. Hutchinson is a very frustrating player in that he will try and beat his full back three times and would rather try and work an opening for himself than pick someone out in the box so his decision making needs to improve if he wants to start more games. I don't think Edwards is going to get any better on the other hand Hutchinson will undoubtedly develop into a better player in time if he can improve his allround game.

Europablue. The situation regarding Birmingham appointing their manager has no bearing on whether stansfield recalled or not. Totally out of Birminghams control. If Fulham want to recall him they will.

@Jugsy I agree with you. A potential player doesn't make it the right player for us. Omari may go on to great things but he hasn't been a game changer for a month or so. @Mediocre quick Kyle Edwards was thought of highly a few years ago as well, I'm not sure what your point is there, so is Dane Scarlett at Spurs, doesn't make them bad players if they're not performing for us, just means they're not at the right stage of their careers to make impacts for us.

Jugsy added 17:33 - Jan 8
@blues1 - it absolutely has a bearing on it. If they believe Mogga will provide better management and produce a better environment then there's a reasonable chance of Fulham being happy with him staying there. Also, they sent him to Exeter last season so they weren't look at top-half of the table teams too much.

Hopefully we have a chance of disrupting that all and bring him to us.

Europablue/blues1..........It's not beyond the realms of possibility that we could put in a bid for Stansfield, who knows maybe 2/3 million, could seal the deal.
