Baggott On As Sub as Indonesia Lose Final Group Match
Wednesday, 24th Jan 2024 13:52

Town centre-half Elkan Baggott won his 23rd full cap as a substitute as Indonesia were beaten 3-1 by Japan in their final group game at the AFC Asian Cup at the Al-Thumama Stadium in Doha, Qatar this lunchtime.

For the second time in two matches, Baggott, 21, was named among the subs and made it onto the field in the 74th minute, replacing Maulana Vikri, who was stretchered off after a challenged by Takumi Minamino.

Indonesia finished third in Group D but can still make the round of 16 if results in other groups go their way.

Fellow Blues centre-half Cameron Burgess has already helped Australia into the round of 16 having topped Group B.

@chepstowblue — if there are 24 countries in a competition, how else do you decide who qualifies?

6 groups of 4 for the total of 24 teams taken part.
Top two from each group for 12 teams, then the best four 3rd placed teams to give you the round of 16 (8 - 4 - 2 - winner)

I would really like to see this lad playing more first team football for us. His confidence on the ball and passing gets better with every game and as much as I like the guts that others show, he has to be part of the long term future

I think he was as a sub for a reason in this game and the last. He looked a bit out of sorts in the Iran game, arguably responsible for a couple of goals. He definitely needs game time and confidence. If ITFC won't give him a chance then we should put him out in loan again.

I agree with McKenna Baggott is not yet good enough for first team football in the championship. His refusal to go out on loan (it was his decision) is affecting his development so much so he struggles to make the Indonesian team. Ive never known a player to get better by not playing surely anyone who genuinely loves the game would rather be playing.
