McKenna Representatives Hold Manchester United Talks - Report Thursday, 23rd May 2024 20:47 Town boss Kieran McKenna’s representatives are reported to have held talks with Manchester United regarding their manager’s job.
According to Sky Sports News, representatives of McKenna met with Red Devils new chief executive Omar Berrada and incoming technical director Jason Wilcox last week to discuss the possibility of the 38-year-old taking over at Old Trafford, where he was a member of the coaching staff under José Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Ralf Rangnick prior to joining the Blues in December 2021.
Erik ten Hag remains manager of United ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final against Manchester City but with speculation regarding his future having been ongoing for some while, the Red Devils having finished eighth in the Premier League this season.
Mauricio Pochettino is the current favourite to replace him ahead of Thomas Tuchel, then McKenna with Roberto De Zerbi and Gareth Southgate also believed to be candidates should the Red Devils jettison Ten Hag.
Elsewhere, Chelsea, who are similarly understood to have held talks with McKenna’s agents along with Brighton, are, according to talkSPORT ready to ask Leicester for permission to speak to their manager Enzo Maresca, who TWTD reported last night is the West Londoners’ top target.
Fans of neither United nor Chelsea appear particularly keen on McKenna being appointed, largely due to his inexperience.
The Seagulls are understood to remain interested in the Town boss, while Francesco Farioli, recommended to the Sussex club by the exiting De Zerbi, has now joined Ajax from Nice.
Town themselves remain determined to do everything they can to keep McKenna at Portman Road with the offer of new contract seeming inevitable. The Northern Irishman’s current terms, signed last summer, run to June 2027.

What will be will be...I wouldnt believe everything you read, its not called the RUMOUR mill for nothing... 90% of whats come out is probably not true, the media companies need to hype things up to get people to click on their website/video/article etc...

He’ll find that place a bit different. Swap the hungry, motivated players here with lazy & overpaid up there. Are those players going to give him the level of respect needed? They’ve given ETH a rough ride and then here’s McKenna who has not managed in the Prem. What he really, really needs is a season or two with a Premier League team who already have given him all the backing needed…

Firstly we can’t begrudge KMac’s decision should the Man Utd job be offered to him. Once in a lifetime stuff - a Man Utd fan from childhood etc etc. I then think wouldn’t it be amazing if he does stay with us for at least one more season, he’d have even more respect from us. The factor to keep us in the prem. My fear is that if he does move on, we are already well into prep time for the new season, planning for new players etc. Recruiting a new manager, the right manager, might take time and would impact the start of the season. We need to hit the ground running in August. Having said all that, in McKenna we trust, and Ashton and the board we trust. I sense there’s a well thought out plan for all scenarios.

The club is bigger than McKenna. The owners needs to be giving him a deadline, either sign on the dotted line or leave by mutual consent and let the club get on with it. McKenna’s halo is slipping off fast, if he cares as much as he has been saying then he needs to leave and sort his own future out and let Ipswich find a replacement.

Why not have a transfer window for managers? Kieran McKenna is under contract here until 2027. There should be some rules in the Premier Greed against this disrespectful behaviour on the part of other clubs disrupting our plans for next season. I hope that Kieran will honour his current contract.

If McKenna goes, you can throw out the window all the comparisons with Sir Bobby Robson. A fanatic Geordie, but he didn’t jump ship until the England job came along. McKenna has used ITFC as a stepping stone. Also how will he rip the coaching staff apart and immediately go after Leif. Sorry but IF he goes I personally will take a different look at McKenna.

Mathiemagic they wont let hm go on mutual consent, there's an alleged buyout clause of 6 million to be considered! Only 2/3 weeks ago he was saying how much he loves the club, I was very disappointed when he skipped the question the other night, could've just said I work for Ipswich town. This man up until now has been class, always spoke with honesty, integrity and total commitment, seems very different now! They say, "what goes up must come down" just didnt expect the leveller to happen this soon and the reason why, this really is putting us behind in our preseason preparations! Lets have an announcement soon please!

The spell has been broken well and truly now. Even if he doesn’t go for whatever reason, we know he would have done if he could have. We always knew that he was very ambitious and nothing wrong with that, but underneath the nice young man saying all the right things, there is someone capable of making cold hard career decisions, without emotion. I guess that’s the way you have to be in football or in life in fact. This is probably the most crucial close season/transfer window in the Clubs history, and McKenna is a bill pull for prospective new players. The recruitment plan was finalised last week( ware his reels talking to clubs then?), for players he wanted. New manager, different style etc.? We’re on the back foot now at this crucial time. Shocking. I am more angry than upset.

Only one club in the premier league will have McKenna in charge, whether it's us, Brighton, Man U or Chelsea. The other 19 won't, so all we need is a manager who can keep us up in the first year with the systems and support behind them at Ipswich. Our success over the past two years wasn't all down to McKenna, it was also down to the process behind him. I'd love him to stay for at least two more years, and perhaps he will in the end. Part of this is to negotiate the best contract he can out of Ipswich, and I suspect his family might prefer that too, rather than see him frazzled in charge of a basket case at Chelsea or Man U. Most of us can survive on £100k a week (sic!) so earning four times as much makes no meaningful difference. And he'd be sacked within a year or two at most, whereas he has a job for life at Town. Take us back into Europe and imagine what that would be worth relative to a year or two at Man U.

The Chelsea approach I understand but their attempt to bring in Potter failed because he didnt have any choice in what players they signed. The 'talks' with Manchester United is a strange one as some of the players that didnt listen to McKenna the coach are still there and what club starts talking to other managers while they still have the FA Cup Final to play? I hope that he decides to stay and work with the 'project' he was employed to do and has virtually a free reign on many aspects of developing and shaping the future of our lovely club.

There are no facts to comment on yet. It’s all speculation. But would have been reassuring if we heard something official from Ashton or Mck.

No sour grapes from me, just pure gratitude. Couldn't blame him, it's just part of the fractiousness of the premier league now. At least we can't get Rooney as he's gone to Argyle. I'd like Edwards from Luton, perfect fit.

Everybody needs to calm down especially you youngsters who swallow and beleive or the speculation! He will lead us into the prem this season I'm telling you! Will be interesting to see how far he can take us

62WasBest - I agree with this except for the agents bit. Yes, they can do some digging, but he could easily publicly distance himself from it -'all my concentration is on preparing for our new season etc.' . He has left the impression that he is losing interest in us and they are testing his exit options. This is bad for him and for us and I don't think, if he stays, he will get the warmth he would otherwise have deserved. (On a geographical note, Chelsea are based in Surrey so hardly commutable)

Who in their right mind would want to work for a club that interviews a person to be a replacement manager whilst their current manager pre-pairs their team to play in a FA cup final.

Less than three weeks ago there was only one thing on my mind and thousands of other fans and that was to beat Huddersfield and play in the Premier league. We did that among amazing scenes both in the ground and the streets. The next thing to look forward to was next years fixtures coming out but in the last week or more a lot of the euphoria has been taken away with reports and rumours that McK will be leaving. It’s very sad for loyal fans like me who have supported Town through thick and thin over the years that neither the Club nor McK have not seen fit to confirm or deny any of the rumours we’ve been hearing. Us fans deserve better than that.

It’s astounding how people are turning on the lad and yet absolutely nothing of any substance has been revealed! Listen to people who work and know him and he comes across as a man with integrity and honour so to hear all this garbage questioning those traits is quite simply, staggering. Folk have extremely short memories and exceptional expectations. He is never going to stay with us indefinitely because however much you might disagree, there are much bigger clubs out there who offer the status we could never compete with. IF he goes, he goes with my utmost thanks and appreciation for what he has done for our fabulous club.
JonDouglas4Ballondor added 09:17 - May 24
If he goes he would have tarnished his legacy for me. We gave him the platform to shine and have literally built his career for him. Not seeing through our first season is disrespectful to the club and the fans. I don't agree with the idea that if we go back down so does his stock. Look at Kompany...

From the moment we were promoted we needed to be focussing on the prem, the players needed ect. The summer is short and no time to waste. Stability is always crucial and even more so now. McKenna has been brilliant and i was sure he would want to see his work progress at the level he has got the club to, even for just the first year. He is a big cog in our club, at Man U ,he will under the cosh from day one, success will need to be immediate , imo it would be a mistake for him to take that on now, and he will regret it .BUT, as ive said before Money is the driving force ,loyalty is a scarce commodity. Im sorry to say i think he will leave, and i and many more will be absolutely gutted .
barrystedmunds added 10:06 - May 24
Gilsey I take your point but Ashton has said on numerous occasions how the club won’t and will never comment on pure speculation which is exactly what this is. As others have said, Ashton is a shrewd operator, we are not going to be caught out with our pants down whatever the outcome.

As said it comes with the territory, Kieron deserves all the praise and credit he has been given, as previously commented he doesn’t owe us anything, as on an early post I actually think he could take a young Chelsea team who were playing good football in the second half of the season and mount a series challenge on the premier title, I think the Man Utd hierarchy like him but the fans would soon turn on him and that gig would be in the future if I was Kieron. But we shouldn’t deny him some time to reflect on his current position, his value and how burning his ambition is. The world has lived the Ipswich Town fairy tale it makes such good press, but how sustainable is it? Yes we would all settle to be another Brentford or Brighton in a couple of years or so and then wait and see what the next steps are but let’s not turn on Kieron, he is an intelligent man and has to be afforded the space to make a decision on what is next for him if there is an unprecedented demand for his services. I am sure loyalty will not have gone a miss in the thought process but we shouldn’t shackle him to this he deserves the right to test the levels of his ambition against other challenges that may be on offer we owe him that!!! If he leaves he should go with our thanks and blessing. There are other good coaches out there coming through. I put my hat on Michael Carrick, but there are a number of possibilities from the EFL, Martí Cifuentes would be an excellent choice, style very similar to Kieron’s, managed Hammersby in a European competition, and would seamlessly slot in, and had it not been for Kieron’s magnificent exploits he may have been a good contender for Championship manager of the year with QPR great escape story. Rosenior and Rohl both did good jobs last year as well and I am sure there would be interest from abroad. Dare I say that Wagner even did a good job at Norwich but needed more time to adapt them to the Klopp style of football, but the Neanderthals hadn’t the common sense to appreciate that and became overly obsessed by us their local rivals doing much better then them and maybe this clouded their judgement. Let’s be thankful for our position after all the miserable years, whilst our history provide a great backdrop to our credentials as a special club, it clan shackle as well, Ramsey and Robson were legends, yes maybe the fairy tale could continue with Kieron, but if we are honest the riches of the premier league make that an enormously difficult ask nowadays. With or without Kieron the good days are still very much with us and I look forward to the new season with whoever is at the helm, Ashton and Gamechanger have been shaping this club to be able to cope with such challenges let’s relax a bit and wait with interest as to how the next couple of weeks unfold rather than panic.
