West Ham Confirm Johnson Exit
Sunday, 30th Jun 2024 12:26

West Ham United have confirmed the departure of right-back Ben Johnson, who is expected to be confirmed as a Town player early this week.

The 24-year-old’s contract with the Hammers is up today with the former England U21 having turned down a new five-year contract at the London Stadium.

Free agent Johnson is understood to have agreed a four-year deal with the Blues with a medical believed to have been passed earlier in the week.

With the Town squad returning for pre-season training tomorrow, it would be little surprise if Johnson’s signing was formally confirmed then.

The Waltham Forest-born, Chigwell-raised full-back came through the academy ranks at West Ham - where he worked with former Town youth coaches Terry Westley and Liam Manning - after joining the club aged seven and made 70 senior starts and 39 sub appearances, scoring twice.

Former England internationals Paul Parker, also a full-back, and Ledley King are his uncle and cousin respectively.

Plenty of other clubs had been linked with Johnson in recent weeks, among them Tottenham, Crystal Palace, Southampton, Rangers, Leeds, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Everton.

Town are also close to confirming the addition of former loanee Omari Hutchinson on a permanent basis with a deal with Chelsea having been agreed along with personal terms.

This is a great bit of business. A starting RB who can move across to LB if required. We didn’t have a fit RB last season and Davis had to do the hard miles at LWB as there wasn’t a suitable alternative. Looking forward to a Johnson/Hutchinson combo down the right with a sprinkling of Burns. COYB

A good piece of business. Will be interesting to see how many more players we actually pay a fee for. I suppose in a sense although free players cost money over the length of their contract the amount isn't a one off large sum. Seeing as we have lost four loan players plus Jackson,Ball, Aluko and probably Hladky, then there may be another one or two who move on we may need another eight players through the PR doors. I know Hutchinson was one of the loan players and he's soon to be permanent, but that still leaves eight more to make up the squad.

Premier quality ,fast , clever on the ball, good tackler and two footed , an extra bonus.

Looks a good signing.

Not sure where Harry fits into all this though....

Paul Parker and Ledley King not bad relations to have. Parker was my favourite right back at the time and he's also an Ipswich fan. Ledley King if it had not been for injuries would have become one of England's greatest centre backs. It's always sad when a team that's been so successful gets broken up and your favourites depart for pastures new but that's what happens in football. McKenna worked miracles last season in turning players that were good division one level into championship standard he will not be able to do it again with this squad with some exceptions. This season is the start of a new chapter and it's very exciting but we must be patient COYB.
