Dozzell Joins Portsmouth
Monday, 5th Aug 2024 19:24

Former Blues midfielder Andre Dozzell has joined Championship new boys Portsmouth having left QPR at the end of last season.

The 25-year-old had been on trial at Sheffield United and scored in a 3-0 friendly victory over Chesterfield last month.

However, the Town academy product, son of Blues legend Jason, has now signed for Pompey on a one-year deal with the club having an option for another season.

“Andre brings plenty of Championship experience, having spent the majority of his career at this level,” Pompey boss John Mousinho, who led his side to promotion last season, told the official Portsmouth website.

“He’s chosen to come here over other options and is someone who has a real ambition to succeed at this club.

“Andre is a very technical midfielder and has the athleticism to get around the pitch and compete, so we’re delighted to welcome him to Pompey.”

Dozzell was released by QPR at the end of last season following a loan spell at Birmingham in the second half of 2023/24.

The former England U16, U17, U18, U19 and U20 international moved to Loftus Road from Town in the summer of 2021 for a fee of £1 million, the West Londoners having triggered a release clause in the contract signed earlier that season.

Good luck Andre, shame you never fulfilled that early promise.

A good move for him. Hope he is able to push on in his career now and get regular game time as he is a very technically gifted player who deserves success.

One of the most under-whelming players I have seen play regularly for Town. I always wanted to see him to perform well, but was never more than “average”. Promised so much but never really delivered.

All the best Andre. Skill is there, whether he is physically capable to have a long career I don't know. Fingers crossed that this move works out for him, as he has talent, just needs the right environment

Didn't lose any sleep when he left. One killer pass every 3 or 4 games never did it for me!

Portsmouth are a good club!
Andre would of thrived under mckenna!
If he was manager back then 100%

Always thought Andre looked the part but never really offered much apart from the odd good pass. I think he struggles with the physical side of the professional game and i fear he might drift from club to club. Hope im wrong and he goes on and has a good carrier.

Glad you've got another crack in the Championship Andre. Screamer against Norwich please!

The Portsmouth manager’s description of Andre’s style of play isn’t the player I remember.
“Has the athleticism to get around the pitch and compete”!

@PositivelyPortman It's possible that Dozzell Jnr "has the athleticism to get around the pitch and compete", what he lacks is the inclination to do so.

Recovered from the most horrendous injury and already has multiple seasons of Championship and League 1 football under his belt. Not a bad career if it ended now!

Had a number of good games last season but managerial changes at both QPR and then Birmingham led to changes in styles of play and him falling out of favour. Maybe being a 'free agent' and getting a fresh start will help push his effort levels higher?

Really hope he kicks on this year!

I wonder how he would have developed if he had been here under KMc, rather than McCarthy/HirstLambert?

Am I the only one whose brain reads Pompey manager John Mousinho as Jose Mourinho?

Passes the ball well but that's about it, not a good tackler or player out of possession. Enough said...

I certainly don't remember him as someone who can get around the pitch. I'd go as far to say that's the weakest part of his game.

However his passing ability and IQ are very good. He's a better footballer than Luongo for sure. Just needs to learn the ugly side of the game. At 25 he'll be approaching his peak. His dad being a club legend maybe didn't help as people were always going to compare them.

Best of luck Andre I'm sure you'll prove people wrong. And please score a winner against Norwich. COYB

Honestly, why care about a player that moved on - and even write about it .. Yes Jason was a legend and always will be , but move on once they leave ,I want to hear about joining us not past players that have not only move but move on again ..
