Davis: No-Brainer to Stay at Town
Monday, 21st Oct 2024 18:08

Blues left-back Leif Davis says it was a no-brainer to sign a new deal with the club after the best two years of his career.

Davis has put pen to paper on a deal which runs to the summer of 2028 with his previous terms up next summer, although with the club having an option for a further season.

The 24-year-old joined Town from Leeds United in the summer of 2022 for a fee of around £1 million plus a further £500,000 in add-ons.

“I’m delighted to call this home for the next four years, buzzing to stay here, to be a part of the club that’s on the up. I’m over the moon to stay here,” he told TownTV.

“There was nothing that made us not want to stay here, the fans, the support, the club, the football we play, everything on and off the pitch was just a no-brainer for us to stay and continue my career here.

“It’s been the best two years of my career so far, the two I’ve enjoyed the most, playing games and making great memories with the lads and for the club.”

Davis, who is widely tipped to become the Blues’ first England international in more than 20 years, praised manager Kieran McKenna’s role in improving him in his two seasons at Portman Road.

“The progress I’ve made from working with him is massive,” he said. “From day one, even when I met him a few years back, he had high hopes for us, he didn’t tell us I was good at everything, he [talked about] things that I needed to work on, which was really good because I knew I had a lot to work on as well.

“And if you look back two years, I think he’s done that for us. If you look back now, I’m a miles better player, more comfortable on the ball, defensively, which I needed to work on, and hopefully I can work with him for a longer period of time now.”

Davis also had praise for Town’s fans: “The support’s incredible here, the fans are second to none, the best fans I’ve played in front of, especially when we’ve played away in the Prem this year, they’re still there from minute one to the final whistle.

“Hopefully that can continue that incredible support every weekend and I’m looking forward to continuing playing here.”

Regarding the rest of the current season, Davis says there’s really only one aim: “As a team we want to stay in the Premier League, so hopefully we can work hard and do that for the club and the supporters.”

No brainer for the club to offer it. You have been great. Keep it up and help keep us up. Well deserved.

The most exciting thing about this is that Leif hasn't peaked yet and us still work in progress. What a fantastic bit of business it was to catch him for such a small sum of money

Would love to see Leif, Kalvin, Greaves, Jack, Liam and Hutch all play for England (and Ipswich) together. We just need to get our mindset right for Saturday. We can beat these teams.

I would like to see him given a go on the left side of midfield.

Trouble seems to be at the moment that the International players come back after a week away exhausted from the events and need more time to get back up to speed again. The energy levels element was evident for all to see against Everton.

All clubs in the Premier league have players away on international duty some more than Ipswich and is not an excuse for losing against a very poor Everton team and West Ham. McKenna done fantastically well to get us promoted with a bang average squad who worked so hard for each other. Any one who has been involved in the game could see we looked out of our depth on Saturday.
