Blues Legend Whymark Dies
Thursday, 31st Oct 2024 16:53

Legendary Town striker Trevor Whymark died this morning, aged 74.

The Burston-born frontman was with Town from 1967 until 1979, scoring 104 goals in 322 starts and 13 sub appearances, famously netting four times in the 4-0 UEFA Cup thrashing of Lazio at Portman Road in 1973. He also scored four times against West Brom in the 7-0 victory and, again in the UEFA Cup, against Swedish side Landskrona.

Inducted into the Town Hall of Fame in 2012, Whymark, the sixth highest scorer in the club’s history, was a member of Sir Bobby Robson’s team which won the Texaco Cup in 1973 but missed out on the 1978 FA Cup final due to injury, although he did appear at Wembley in the Charity Shield defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Whymark won one full England cap while with the Blues, having previously played at U23 level, in a 2-0 victory in Luxembourg in 1977 in which Paul Mariner scored his first international goal and Kevin Beattie played his final game for the Three Lions.

After his time at Portman Road, Whymark represented the Vancouver Whitecaps, Grimsby, Derby, Southend, Peterborough and Colchester, before returning to local club Diss Town, from whom he had joined the Blues. He later came back to Town to work as an academy coach.

Whymark was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s late in 2019 with the family going public with the news in 2023 when son Craig began fundraising for the Alzheimer's Society.

Very sad to see this news, watched him so many times and also able to see him when he played for the Whitecaps. Great ability and seemed very calm in front of goal. Agree with Bluerico about being under rated at the time.
RIP

Very saddened to hear this and admit to a tear as i write this, wonderful early memories of ipswich town with my dad. Another memory was going to his wedding in ixworth and meeting my hero at the time Laurie Sivell, didnt wash my hand for the rest of that day!

The word legend gets used far to often on players, even ordinary players some times but on this occasion its well justified!

The original Dissboy, a true legend!

R.I.P Trevor.

Another of my favourite players of that era now gone, such a character who enjoyed playing football with a smile on his face.
RIP Trevor

Very sad for his family. He was good with his head and feet, had an eye for goal and played with some of Town’s best ever players. I remember the Lazio game but had forgotten who scored them. Should have been capped more than he was. A proper footballer.

Always felt sad that he missed out on the cup final, although Geddis did a great job replacing him.

Thanks for some of my earliest and best football memories, Trev.

Trevor Whymark was my boyhood hero. I was in the crowd v Lazio; an incredible night I’ll never forget. 15 years ago I was lucky enough to chat with him - he was so humble, modest and personable. One of the very best. RIP true Ipswich Town legend.

Sad loss for his family. In terms of football I think WBA was the Paul Mariner's first game for us? If so that was some understanding the two had quickly built up, Shows how good and clever Trevor and he both were as players. And on those pitches (compared to today).

RIP Trev. Condolences to the family. I too was at the West Brom game but my first experience of a Whymark goal came earlier when I was on the West Stand terrace without a milk crate. An older fan realised I had not seen Trev's goal and described it to me, a glancing header.

We just want our heroes to go on and on but he has been taken from us far too early. Wonderful that a local boy could do so well for us and even play for England, how proud his family must have been.
We must keep remembering him as the years pass by, he was special.

One of the best headers of the ball you will ever see. Great player for Town and also my adopted second team Vancouver Whitecaps, where he will forever be held in legendary status.

I was at the game versus WBA what a day it was! Town had beaten West Brom and West Ham for the signing of Paul Mariner earlier in the week, and the crowd were buzzing. It was a brilliant performance and atmosphere capped by the four goals that Trevor scored. The win put Town 2nd just behind Liverpool but was destined to finish the season 3rd behind Liverpool and Man City, such was the standing of Ipswich Town back then.
We have now seen three players and a great manager die from that team Kevin Beattie, Paul Mariner and now Trevor, all amazing players and England internationals and of course Sir Bobby one of the greatest England managers.RIP to all of you Town legends.

He's the reason I began supporting Ipswich. Had a collection of football cards and cut the pack to pick a team and it was Trevor Whymark. R.I.P.

I was devastated when Trev didn't make Wembley. I thought we didn't stand a chance. My favourite moment was a game against Chelsea at Portman Road, someone will remember which, his header was so hard it was almost warp speed.

I was also fortunate enough to witness Trevor's 4 goal feats. I also remember him taking over in goal when our goalkeeper - David Best I think - was injured (only one substitute in those days).
Truly worthy of the legend label.

Great player who never really received the recognition he deserved (outside ITFC). Very sad news. RIP, Trevor.
